From New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz comes a gripping new romantic suspense trilogy fraught with danger and enigma. Decades ago in the small town of Fogg Lake, The Incident occurred: an explosion in the cave system that released unknown gases. The residents slept for two days. When they woke up they discovered that things had changed—they had changed. Some started having … Some started having visions. Others heard ominous voices. And then, scientists from a mysterious government agency arrived. Determined not to become research subjects of strange experiments, the residents of Fogg Lake blamed their “hallucinations” on food poisoning, and the story worked. But now it has become apparent that the eerie effects of The Incident are showing up in the descendants of Fogg Lake.…
Catalina Lark and Olivia LeClair, best friends and co-owners of an investigation firm in Seattle, use what they call their “other sight” to help solve cases. When Olivia suddenly vanishes one night, Cat frantically begins the search for her friend. No one takes the disappearance seriously except Slater Arganbright, an agent from a shadowy organization known only as the Foundation, who shows up at her firm with a cryptic warning.
A ruthless killer is hunting the only witnesses to a murder that occurred in the Fogg Lake caves fifteen years ago—Catalina and Olivia. And someone intends to make both women vanish.

Jayne Ann Krentz writes contemporary romantic suspense novels that include paranormal elements. She does this as well under her Amanda Quick historical romances pen name and her Jayne Castle futuristic romances pen name. She’s on my Must Read list for all of her pen names. I enjoyed The Vanishing, and if you like a little paranormal with your romance, definitely check out all of her books.
I never hesitate to recommend books by Jayne Ann Krentz (or Amanda Quick, or Jayne Castle) because no matter her name, this author is always going to give me a most entertaining read. THE VANISHING is no exception. I love delving into a new series with JAK, and this one starts out with a chilling murder years ago in a rather ominous cave on the shores of Fogg Lake.
Before long, the reader moves into the present where so much of what happens in the tiny town of Fogg Lake is based on mysterious events that occurred years earlier, even prior to the murder. With just the right touch of the paranormal to add even more depth to the main characters, it’s a roller-coaster ride with events falling into line in a manner that not only brings the two protagonists—Catalina Lark and Slater Arganbright—closer together, it also tosses them into a mystery only they can solve.
I am a huge fan of JAK’s writing. I love her storytelling, the way her characters are unique to each story while still holding the same qualities that I love in my heroes and heroines. Her women are strong and fearless, and her men are honorable and always quirky enough to make them even more exciting. The side characters are entertaining and the flow of the author’s writing and her distinct voice are always spot on.
I’m definitely looking forward to the next in the series and I’m proudly adding this newest book to my rather copious collection by one of my favorite authors. I recommend anything JAK writes. THE VANISHING is no exception.
The Fogg Lake series is starting out to be another hit, I can hardly wait to read the next book.
In The Vanishing, the two young women, Catalina Lark and Olivia LeClair, define strong modern women. They set their goals and priorities and refuse to let men or circumstances derail them. When Olivia goes missing, Catalina starts searching for her. While admittedly, she might need help, Catalina is no damsel in distress.
When Slater Arganbright shows up at their office the day after Olivia is taken, the two team up to uncover a more serious plot. Equals, each respecting the other’s strengths and willing to offer theirs where the other is weak, Slater and Catalina soon find themselves discovering more than an evil plot to control a missing lab.
Olivia and Catalina along with Slater and the Foundation will have their hands full in this series as one family tries to regain control of the lab for psychic experiments and all of its assets.
This is a fun blend of mystery, intrigue, paranormal and romance. I can’t wait for the next book.
A page turner of paranormal suspense and fun
Catalina Lark and Olivia LeClair’s rite of passage camp out in the Fogg Lake vision caverns has far-reaching consequences; fifteen years later, this returns to haunt them in the form of secret labs, clandestine organizations, paranormal weapons, and off-the-charts talents. Oh and romance in true JAK style. It’s a race against time for Catalina and Slater to find their friend and beat the bad guys to the punch. Always a pleasure to read my fav auto-buy author!
Book 1… Yeah! there’s more! A great tale of romance, family conections, family history to go along with your murder, mystery and mayhem with a bit of something extra! Good story!
Love her books under all names. They are such a great read!
Great Book.
Always enjoy this author. Dependable. Nothing offensive. No triggers. Just entertaining. HEA.
Another paranormal hit by Jane Krentz. The plot follows events of a failed government project occurring in Fogg Lake. Someone is trying to locate the various labs involved in the project and will stop at nothing to obtain their ends. Witnessing one of the attempts to locate “hot artifacts,” Catalina and Olivia try to assist The Foundation in locating at least one lab and putting the conspirators out of business. Fun read.
Wonderful story lines with interesting characters, looking forward to the rest of the series.
Jayne Ann Krentz is on my short list of authors that I purchase without reading the story synopsis or customer reviews! The Vanashing is the first in a series and I cannot wait to read the rest. She is a master of her craft and her stories stay with me long after I finish the final page.
Exciting paranormal, romantic-suspense novel with a strong heroine and terrific hero
This is the first book in an exciting, paranormal, romantic-suspense series set in a mysterious, tiny, insular community in Washington State called, Fogg Lake. The town derives its name from the blinding fog that has blanketed the community and a nearby lake every night for the past 40 years, ever since “The Incident.” Within the enormous chain of uncharted caves near the town, a massive explosion of unknown origin belched out a smothering pall of noxious fumes, which have produced permanent, intergenerational effects on the residents of the town. Basically, every resident and their descendants have psychic abilities of one kind or another. And every child born and raised in Fogg Lake is trained from earliest childhood to accept, and learn to cope with, their psychic abilities, in order to “pass for normal” in the outside world. And, most of all, to diligently protect their community’s secrets from prying outsiders.
Fourteen years ago, when they were naïvely adventurous teenagers, Catalina Lark and her BFF, Olivia Dayton, engaged in an adolescent rite of passage, unique to Fogg Lake. The two of them spent the night inside the scary caves, which they were well aware are notorious for producing bizarre hallucinations in anyone unwise enough to explore them. In the process, the two girls witnessed a murder and passed through a psychic storm while fleeing the killer, which was so disorienting, that when they were rescued the next day, they and the residents of the town became convinced that what Catalina and Olivia thought they had observed had been nothing more than a delirious fantasy.
Unfortunately, in the present day, it seems the events of that long ago night have come back to haunt Catalina and Olivia in their lives as private investigators who own their own small firm in Seattle. One night Olivia vanishes, and a witness confirms that she was kidnapped. Convinced that Olivia is mortal danger, Catalina is determined, no matter what it takes, to rescue her friend. But the monumental task seems all but impossible, until enigmatically sexy, Slate Trevelyan, seeks her out and offers his assistance.
From the moment they meet, it is blazingly evident to Catalina’s intuitive perception that Slate is as psychically talented as she herself. But he represents a powerful organization which polices rogue psychics—an organization that Catalina, and every citizen of Fogg Lake, has been raised from the cradle to be suspicious of. But though she can’t possibly trust him, Catalina knows, for Olivia’s sake, she can’t possibly refuse Slate’s help.
Catalina is a classic, “kick-ass,” Krentz heroine, with the most sympathetic characteristic any protagonist can have: she never gives up. Slate is my favorite kind of romance hero. His source of personal power is not based in acting the part of a domineering, “alphahole,” control-freak, a hackneyed type of hero which is prevalent in far too many romance novels. Instead, his strength is based in determination and ethics, and in, best of all, the courage to be emotionally vulnerable to the heroine, by fearlessly admitting his darkest secret to Catalina. My only niggling complaint about this terrific man is that I wish JAK had revealed a bit more of his recent, traumatic backstory. I was really curious about it.
I am delighted that JAK has ventured back into paranormal romance. She does a great job with it, and I am already leaping into reading the next book in the series. I very much look forward to the third book in this series which, I hope, will be released sometime in 2021.
I experienced this novel in audiobook format. The narrator, Sandra Michelle, does an excellent job acting out all the parts, but she is, for my taste anyway, only moderately proficient at portraying male voices. Rather than deepening her voice to indicate a masculine resonance, she hoarsens it. Other than that, her narration was enjoyable.
I rate this book as follows:
Heroine: 5 stars
Hero: 5 stars
Subcharacters: 4 stars
Romance Plot: 5 stars
Suspense/Thriller Plot: 4 stars
Paranormal Elements: 4 stars
Audiobook Narration: 4 stars
Writing: 5 stars
Overall: 5 stars
I love a para-psyche romance novel by Jayne Ann Krentz. The perfect blend of the sexy, tortured hero, with a heavy dose of aura and intuition. Sprinkle it with a little mystery and it’s a perfect weekend read. JAK never disappoints me.
A gripping tale from Jayne Ann Krentz new series Fogg lake. The Vanishing has a great storyline full of suspense and action with great characters and a spooky atmospheric vibe that Krentz is so good at writing. I truly enjoyed this paranormal suspense read and found it quite good. It had a slow and steady pace and she is building this new series with the back story and characters for future books. Im giving this book a strong 4 instead of a 5 only because while I found it entertaining I need more interaction between my main characters. I loved Catalina she was a strong sexy smart woman and Slater a man who is mysterious as he is sexy. While their was a great chemistry and great sex I felt their wasn’t krentz usual rock your world kind of pairing. I also loved secondary characters like Olivia, catalina’s friend and partner another cool smart chic, but I will say my favorite was the mysterious and beautiful Harmony the town’s library and Oracle! And her warning towards the end of the book sounded ominous to say the least. And then theirs the beautiful but deadly Gwendolyn swan owner of Swan Antiques . She and her little vintage clockwork nurse doll with a syringe are quite deadly! Can’t wait to read the next book in this series,I have a feeling that were in for a bumpy ride. Until next time Luv’s
Jayne Ann Krentz can always be counted on to deliver a gripping story, and this one is no exception. Compelling characters, witty dialogue, romance, suspense and paranormal elements are woven into a fast-paced tale that will keep you up late at night, turning pages to find out what happens next. It’s a stand-alone novel– all important questions are answered and the ending will leave you sighing with satisfaction– but it’s also the first of three books in the Fogg Lake Trilogy. Can’t wait for the January release of the next one, ALL THE COLORS OF NIGHT!
Another great book from Jayne. This is the typical page-turning romantic adventure you’d expect from her. There are some interesting paranormal elements, a mystery, and great characters. I’ll be rereading this story in years to come.
I enjoy the author’s visits to alternative realities. They are so believable.
The only thing missing from this one is Dustbunnies (regular readers of hers know what I mean).
A interesting story with intriguing people.
A missing friend.
Uncertain assistance from a questionable group.
A decades old mystery that is suddenly active.
I really enjoyed this book, first in a new series by JAK. I’ve read most of her books & this one didn’t disappoint! It featured main characters Catalina Lark & Slater Arganbright who go searching for her best friend Olivia LeClair after she’s kidnapped. This one is a romantic suspense book about people with psychic abilities. if you liked her other books of this nature, you will love this one!! I can’t wait to read the next one!!
This is the first in the Fogg Lake series, and I enjoyed it very much. The mystery was very well done, filled with fun characters and intrigue. Ms. Krentz always delivers a fun read.
Catalina Lark and her friend Olivia have both inherited their paranormal abilities from their Fogg Lake ancestors. During their teen years they witness a murder in the nearby caves and while hiding found an unmapped strange cavern. Move ahead a few years and they are using their talents in their investigation office. When Olivia is kidnapped, Catalina is determined to find her and reluctantly accepts the offer of help from Slater Arganbright of the Foundation. The head of the Foundation just months before had a part in destroying Catalina’s reputation as an investigator with another firm so she is not happy about the association. The Arganbrights are convinced the kidnapping is related to the murder the girls witnessed years before and a shadowy organization in search of the Vortex which was part of the Bluestone Project that included a Fogg Lake Lab. An explosion there resulted in the abundance of paranormal talents born in the community. However there is something intriguing about Slater and his aura. This was a real page turner and I enjoyed every page!
