I normally like Miss Tan’s work. I found this book choppy, drawn out and felt the characters were one dimensional. I found myself over and over saying how stupid the characters actions were
Very good but very reminiscent of Memoirs of a Geisha
This author is a favorite of mine. Can’t wait for more by her. Beautifully writing and expression. Makes me feel involved.
I had a bit of difficulty with the main characters who were not always admirable. The men were weak and the women, although strong, were not strong enough to overcome the situation and their goals suffered. Perhaps it was the period when women were second class people.
Good insight into Chinese cultures in both the US and China, then and now. Centered around playing mahjong for two generations of families helped me pick the book and enjoy the culture.
A definite page turner. Was unsble to get my nose out of the book. Jogjly tecommend. This writer can write!!!
Any Tan is truly one of the great story tellers of our tim
This book was almost 1000 pages and it felt like it was only 100 pages. It was that good!
So disappointing after her other book.
I thought this was a great read. It took me To Shanghai and back. The characters were strong.
Another slice of life unknown to westerners. Highly recommend.
