A twisty thriller that would be a perfect read for the beach, pool, or bathtub.
Crime analyst Kate reads ambiguous but suspicious anonymous texts on her husband’s phone and jumps to the conclusion that he must be having an affair with one of her friends from college. As the friends and their families gather in the south of France to celebrate their fortieth birthdays, suspicions and secrets smolder and flare.
The author skillfully ratchets up the suspense, shifting POVs and weaving together seemingly disparate storylines until they knit into a larger narrative. The setting is compelling – beautiful, sweltering, and perilous all at the same time.
A few things I didn’t like: The adult characters are mostly unsympathetic, which makes it difficult to care about their squabbles and possible marital strife. Kate narrates her chapters in first-person POV, but her character never seems convincing as a crime analyst. Her alleged rationality and analytical mindset seem absent until the last part of the book.
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC in exchange for the honest review.
This book was incredibly written. This book had so many twists. I thought it would go one way and it went the other way. I was definitely a page turner. I highly recommend this book!
Special thanks to Netgalley, St. Martin Press, and T.M. Logan for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was a twisted story. It starts off making you think one thing but it ends up something completely different.
The characters all seemed caught up in their own issues and I found myself not really liking them too much. I think the last third of the book was the most interesting .
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the early copy
This is the kind of read this author can do in his sleep. He builds each character and takes you through situations that lead you down one path just to have the answers elsewhere. The characters aren’t really likable and as the story unravels so do they. As parents they are mediocre at best, making excuses for their kids or being completely clueless. As friends they have a past that is completely dysfunctional and break all the friend codes that are in place for a reason. On top of that none of the couples seem very happy in their situations. Kate is a piece of work and the more you know about her the less you like her as well. It’s crazy because while you may not like the characters either it’s like watching a car crash you just can’t look away. The ending?? Man I love the way they think and the way they make sure it’s done. That in itself helped me love this author more. I always, always will read this author’s books especially since I am always in a tither until the last word and eager to see what’s next.
Secrets and lies abound in this intense family drama. With all the twists and turns, I found it really hard to put down and I read it quickly so I could find out what happened.
