If anyone asks, I knew better than to flash my boobs for Mardi Gras beads.I still don’t know why I did it.Maybe it was the dare from my two best friends. Maybe it was the guys on the balcony saying they’d throw Fireball shots with the beads.Or maybe it was the quiet guy in the corner of that same balcony with piercing gray eyes, wavy dark hair, and a smile so tempting I wanted to climb up there … wanted to climb up there and lick it off his face.
Maybe it was because I never thought I’d see them again.
Not that it matters. Not today.
Because the hotel I manage was finally bought—and the guy who walks in and introduces himself as my new boss is Mr. Tall, Dark, and Silent.
There are many upsides to being single.
Your new boss knowing what your boobs look like?
Not one of them.
(THE UPSIDE TO BEING SINGLE is a standalone, romantic comedy from the author who brought you MISS FIX-IT and BEING BROOKE.)

5 He’ll Take Her Hot Mess and All Stars!!
I can always count on Ms. Hart to take me out of whatever funk I might be in with one of her outrageously hilarious rom-coms. Mellie and Jake’s story is no exception.
This book had me laughing from the very beginning with Mellie’s actual “reasons” on The Upside of Being Single. And as a single woman, they make complete and utter sense to me. Mellie is a beautiful, strong and independent woman that manages a hotel in New Orleans. This in and of itself sets the stage for some of the best scenes in the book. She also has two best friends that can be the worst influence on her but they’re each other’s people and a night out with cocktails ends up having repercussions she could never have seen. And so sets the stage for our H/h the rest of this book.
Mellie and Jake have to work together because he’s the new owner of her hotel and he is all alpha, sexy and dirty talking. I absolutely loved him!!! As the book progresses and their close quarters strain everything in their day it’s just a matter of time before they come together in every sense of the word.
Ms. Hart is an author that knows her audience and always delivers a story that can keep us engaged from the first page to the very last. I absolutely loved Mellie and Jake together. She’s unlike anyone he’s ever met and he’s a surprise she never thought she wanted. Their chemistry is off the charts high and together they make a pair that is perfect together.
Being a Louisiana girl, I love a good read that is set here. Emma did a great job with New Orleans and the pretty believable story about the hotel owner and his manager. It was a quick, witty read with enough steam and tension that held you until they *finally* decided to do something about their attraction to one another. I hope we get more about Mellie and Jake when we get Peyton’s book!
First off I need to say why have I never read Emma Hart before this book, I have heard so many good things about her books but The Upside of Being Single is my first, it won’t be my last. This is one of the funniest books I have read, I loved Mellie and her friends and oh I swooned over Jake. Always remember don’t flash your boobs because you never know who might see them and in a Mellie’s case it was her new boss Jake who got an eyeful…..what’s follows is a brilliant hilarious read, this book has it all, it’s funny, it has quirky characters who have the best banter going on and it has a hero to swoon over. I’m looking forward to reading more from Emma Hart
Another winner! So much snark and sarcasm mixed in with witty banter to keep this moving along and I hated it to end. Mellie is the manager of a hotel in New Orleans and during Mardi Gras while walking with her friends she lets loose and finally flashes for the first time and a few days later the new owner comes in and, of course, the gorgeous stranger is him. Mellie is a hot mess who can trip over her feet and it is a wonder she survives without injury but Jake is up to the task saving her while rehabbing the hotel. These two are made for each other! This one is short but fun and sexy and just right!
Who would have guessed that in the madness of Mardi Gras, when Mellie’s friends dared her to flash her boobs, even though she wasn’t wearing a bra, that the person she would flash would be her new boss? Or to be more specific, her tall, dark and silent boss with the brooding eyes and the awesome body. I love Ms. Hart’s writing style. She has a witty sarcasm that you can totally picture in your mind and makes you want to laugh out loud and inappropriately while reading. Such fun.
Talk about a mess…
Melly doesn’t ride the hot mess express; she is the hot mess express. With daily stops at crazy town and did I just do that ville, there is sure to be amusement in the part of the listener/reader.
This workplace romance starts with a memorable meet cute and ends with a dare.
Emma Hart has written yet another novel, that has instantly become one of my all time favourite novels ever!
The Upside of Being Single will leave you breathless. You will be swooning, you will be laughing, and most importantly, you will be falling in love.
While reading, you can’t help but fall in love with Jake. He will have his moments where you think he is cocky and arrogant, but, he will always win you over. He has this aura about him, that you can’t help but have a smile on your face when he talks, and he will certainly make you swoon.
Let’s not forget about the friendship goals that take place within this novel. Seriously, these girls make you want to join there group, just so that you can get in on their hilarious conversations and crazy antics!
This is another unputdownable, million star read from Emma Hart.
5/5 Stars!
I freaking LOVED this one! If I didn’t mention this on the first book I read by this author, I’m pretty sure Emma Hart is going to become a favorite author, one that I hope I get the chance to meet sometime so I can totally fangirl over her! First I loved this book taking place in New Orleans, as it has become one of my favorite cities to visit. The fact that they went on a ghost tour was really neat, because I did one of those this past summer when I visited NOLA myself! Then so much about her characters and their sarcastic sense of humor is just like me and the people I hang around with. This is one that I had so much trouble getting out of the car and having to stop listening because of how much fun it was, and how close to the edge of my seat I was as I listened. While there were a few chapters told from Jake’s point of view, they were still narrated by the female narrator, so that wasn’t my favorite, but I still liked getting those little glimpses into his thoughts. While it felt like the sexual tension was very much a slow burn, to be fair, the book basically took place only over a couple of weeks, so that didn’t bother me too much. Also, loved the term “shark week” at the beginning. Had never heard, have no use for it myself these days, but loved it!
This was a funny and sweet read that I really enjoyed.
Ahhh! I absolutely adored Emma Hart’s last two books (Miss Fix-It and Miss Mechanic) so I was so freaking excited to get my hands on her latest release. This extraordinarily talented author certainly didn’t disappoint with this one and was yet another home run in my eyes!
The Upside to Being Single was a hilarious comedic tale that had me laughing my a** off right from the very beginning. Every time I pick up one of her stories I know without a doubt that I am in for a great time because she know how to capture the readers attention and hold on until the very end! The moment I began reading I just knew that I was going to be staying up late into the night and while I was dragging a** the next morning it was definitely worth it. I mean all of Emma Hart’s books are totally worth all my sleepless nights.
Get ready for a story chock full of hilarious banter, donuts (seriously who doesn’t love them), and of course a whole lot of steamy chemistry between our leading lady and leading man. Jake and Mellie’s story will make any reader fall in L-O-V-E with romcom (if you don’t already). These two met under some “interesting” circumstances and soon discovered that life can be cruel sometimes…but you’ll just have to read the story to find out all the details.
Make sure to pick up your copy of The Upside to Being Single right now. Go do it. I’ll wait. Did you do it? I hope you did because you are about to go and enjoy a crazy hilarious ride with Jake and Mellie!!!
The Upside to Being Single is one of those romantic comedies, which quickly weasels its way into your heart.
Mellie aka Melanie has been the manager of a hotel for awhile and has learned that her new boss will be visiting. Someone who has gladly purchased the hotel. But it’s not at all who she imagined. This is one of the most hilarious books I’ve read this year, the never-ending banter between Mellie and Mr. Creed was so much fun. I wished I could have been there myself. Hart made you feel that passion, that simmers just before there’s no going back. The amount of sarcasm just leaking off these pages is brilliant.
I loved the secondary characters as well, the employees at the hotel and Mellie’s BFF”s were just hilarious. There’s no way that reading this story, wouldn’t put you in a good mood. I’m glad that I took a chance on this book, I’ve been in a bit of a rut lately. I think it’s just because it’s the new year and new things are happening. So this is an excellent start to the new year and… the second one of this series is coming out in a couple of months so win-win.
Overall, I give this Five Boundless Stars. It didn’t make me cry, but it sure made me laugh.
Mellie and Jack are going to drive one another crazy in this zany romance filled with talk of flashing, an accident prone Miss, and powdered donuts. Mellie, just out for a night on the town with her besties, was talked into taking part in the Mardi Gras grand tradition of boobs for beads. Assured in the knowledge she would never see the lucky recipient of her topless showcase, she displays the goods. What she wasn’t counting on was her new boss being the Tall Dark and Silent stranger she treated to an all access boobie pass. Mortified doesn’t even begin to cover her state of being especially as he doesn’t even have the decency to pretend it never happened. Jake cannot believe the goddess that made his first Mardi Gras very memorable is one of his newest employees. Calamity Mellie is a walking a hazard and he knows that getting involved with one of his employees is a no-no, but she makes him not give two figs about anything but being with her.
I loved Jake, the man got to the point, “is it normal to have seen more breasts in one weekend than I have in my entire life?” Jake is just nonchalant about things, “without removing his attention from the magazine, he pointed to the floor next to him. “Your bra is right here on top of the clothes you wore yesterday.” Jake sure knows how to woo a girl, “skip the cooking and go straight to effing, Mellie.” I loved this book, Mellie was such a klutz and her and Jake just went together like peanut butter and jelly.
My first book by Emma Hart and I’m an instant fan.
The banter between Jake and Mellie was hilarious; from the way they met to the way they ended up sharing her office and more. I really liked the way even though at times she was a bit of a handful; he still respected her and wanted to get to know her better. I loved the fact that she mouthed off even though he was her boss, because we all know how that works in real life, right? 😛
“You look pretty today.”
“I’m wearing yoga pants, a shirt with a sauce stain on it, and I think my socks have holes in them. Try again, Romeo.”
I found this book to be a refreshment; I’m used to reading about a smartass women who know what they are wroth but none I’ve read so far had made me laugh quiet as much. This book is an easy 4,5* read.
And the little expert at the end of the book?? I can’t wait to see and read what will happen when Peyton finds her match.

OMG…. after reading heart-wrenching stories I need a book that would make me laugh and this read definitely had me laughing. This book was hilarious, witty, sexy and just a fun read that held my attention from the very fist page. Jake and Mellie will have you begging for more with every bit of sexual tension and quick-witted banter they throw at each other. So excited for the next book!
I feel like the ending was rushed. The book left you wondering what happened next.
What I love about Emma Hart is her sense of humour and it was in full force in The Upside To Being Single . It’s hysterical, sexy and so full of swoon moments. Emma Hart writes real people that are flawed and beautiful and you can’t help falling in love with them.
Mellie, Peyton and Chloe are 3 best friends and when they are together … you need to be prepared for the unexpected!! Their friendship is what made me laugh so hard and the texting and interaction between them was like watching an episode of Sex and the City- NOTHING IS TABOO BETWEEN THEM!!
One night, Mellie and the girls went out and after too many drinks, they acted carefree but Mellie did not think that this will follow her at work the day after!!
Mellie has been managing a hotel for years on her own but now the new owner wants to come in and meet his staff. She was far from expecting to see the man from her drunken night that saw, for sure, too much of her.
Jake put all his inheritance in this hotel and decides to take charge of it. One day, Mellie arrives at work and realises that someone is sharing the small space of her office with her!!! Jake, the man that she is meant to hate but that she finds so so hot!!
“Jacob Creek was my boss. Not only he was my boss, but he was handsome and, to my annoyance, disarmingly charming. “
Jake takes a real pleasure into driving her mad and knows how to push her buttons. The attraction between them is sizzling but how long are they going to be able to play the game of cat and mouse?
The sass of Mellie combined with the wit of Jake had me in tears because they made me laugh so hard and when you had Peyton and Chloe to the conversation- you are guaranteed to be LAUGHING OUT LOUD!!
“Mellie’s always in crisis. IT’s in her DNA. If it weren’t from this, it’ll be from the papercut she got opening the donut bag.”
Emma hart has a flair for describing a completely normal situation and turning it into the funniest thing you have ever heard! The Upside To Being Single was fun and mouth-watering sexy!!
PS: This book should be read with a big bag of Donuts by your side!
So what do you do when it’s Marti Gras in New Orleans and you’ve been drinking with your friends…you flash your boobs to complete strangers.
Nothing more awkward than meeting the new owner of the hotel you manage the next morning and realize it’s one of the men from the night before that you flashed.
Poor Mellie is so embarrassed that her new boss, Jake, has seen her boobs. Mellie is a really good person who goes above and beyond taking care of her employees. She has such a great snarky sarcastic you can’t help but love her. The only thing I didn’t like about her was her disrespect for Jake in his position as her boss.
I loved that Jake gives the attitude right back to Mellie. Jake knows to use donuts to get to Mellie’s soft side. With the banter between these two you just know that there is chemistry boiling. Those two are sizzling!
I also love the bantering Mellie has with her friends, Peyton and Chloe. They are hilarious. Mellie being accident prone also adds a layer of humor.
I also enjoyed the tidbits, words of wisdom at the beginning of each chapter about the Upside of Being Single.
I hope we get more of Jake’s cousin, Sam in future books.
This is a wonderful funny book.
I can’t wait till the next book to see if Peyton wins the bet.
I loved Mellie and Jake’s story!! Mellie is hilariously klutzy and sassy and is just so real. From her love affair with donuts to the smart ass comments she has. Plus her ability to find the smallest item and hurt herself on it or break it.
Jake gives Mellie sassiness back but that works for them. They bicker but it’s all in good fun. Plus I think they actually use it as foreplay. From the beginning of their encounters, starting from flashing him for beads, there has been a chemistry between the two.
I so hope we get to read/see more of both Jake and Mellie’s Friends. I think their stories will be just as hysterical and sweet!
The Upside To Being Single, is a romantic comedy and although it is a standalone, it’s the first title in a trio of books to be released around the lives of best friends Mellie, Payton and Chloe. This particular tile features Mellie and Jake and their story is a fast paced, witty, sexy, heat and humor filled, slow burn workplace romance.
For the most part this title is told from Mellie’s point of view, but for several chapters we get a glimpse into Jake’s psyche. This pair of characters are incredibly endearing, and their ability to wind each other up will keep you completely captivated and entertained.
Jacob ‘Jake’ Chance is sexy, cocky, kind, and funny alpha. This charming and handsome hero, has the patience of a saint to put up with Mellie’s attitude, and bluster.
Mellie Rogers is an awkward, crazy, quirky, klutz. She’s strong, full of sass and vinegar, blunt, and has no filter so you never know what to expect will come out of her mouth next. She’s stubborn, and doesn’t shy away from a challenge or dare. All her best intentions and self control fly out the window when she’s in Jake’s presence.
“If I’d learned anything from meeting Jake, it was that my self-control was practically minimal. ”
I adored the banter between this pair it’s so playful, witty, fun and flirty, but also full of sarcasm, sexual innuendo and arguments. The attraction and sexual tension between this pair in undeniable and is only exacerbated by their close working environment. You will not only laugh with this pair, but at their expense as well.
“Let it go, Mellie. The sooner you accept that I’m your boss and me knowing what your boobs look like doesn’t bother me, the easier this will be.”
The friendship Mellie shares with Peyton and Chloe is relate-able. You know those couple of girlfriends who are your partners in crime. The mischief and antics that this trio plots and initiates had laughing out loud.
The quick witted humor is addictive, and this fun, well written story will leave you laughing out loud and eager for more of this entertaining and engaging series, to see what mischief and shenanigans these ladies will embark on next.
