First, I must admit that I’m a sucker for sports romance stories., especially when redemption is involved. This one did not disappoint. Landry and Daphne’s young love is put to the test and does not survive. Misunderstanding leads to pain, turmoil and bad choices. Those choices reap consequences that produce even more consequences.
Supposedly, they each move on with life. Landry’s success as a star running back has women flocking to him in college and later in the pros. In college, he refuses to see how he dropped Daphne off at the curb. In the pros, he parties, plays and convinces himself life is great. He not only has himself fooled, but everyone else too. But his ‘hoity-toity’ lifestyle has cost him the most precious thing in his life …. and he doesn’t even know it.
Daphne does her best to forget that fateful night where a choice made sends her life crashing. Feeling hurt and betrayed, she leaves Landry to go back home. Her car breaks down on the road so she calls Landry’s best friend to help her. That phone call lead to more bad choices which brought more consequences.
So, how do Landry and Daphne get off that treadmill? It’s not easy but God works in mysterious ways. Life lessons are learned, forgiveness is necessary and redemption is sought.
OBSERVATIONS:
… Landry’s mother was a piece of work. Her husband, Bud, says she shows tough on the outside but is a softie on the inside. I never saw that ‘softie’ side of her. I saw a control freak, a manipulator and yes, a hypocrite who never saw the need to forgive or to be forgiven .
… I kept wanting to know just what ‘Winnie’ did to keep Daphne and Landry apart. Daphne keeps alluding to something specific, but I never found out what that was.
… While in college, Landry seemed to let his fame and popularity take over. Then when he went on to the pros and became a superstar, he seemed to live ‘the life of Riley’. I wanted to see him acknowledge his own wrongdoings and how his behavior led to Daphne leaving in the first place. Beau told Landry that he handed Daphne to him on a silver platter. That right there should have opened Landry’s eyes and had him fessing up to his role in the consequence they both suffered. Landry was far from innocent.
… I could understand why Daphne made the choice she did when it came to Jace. She felt Landry ‘hated her guts’ and had a different woman one each arm while always partying. I can see where she thought ‘informing’ Landry of the situation would not end well.
Four stars since I wanted more depth, emotion expressed from Landry and Winnie. Daphne’s remorse showed through. Landry’s remorse showed somewhat but needed more. As for Winnie, she never showed any regret.
The story of a sweet couple who broke up and didn’t see each other for many years. They each pretend to others that they are fine. But a terrible accident makes all those fake smiles go away. The story is fascinating and took hold of my emotions. I almost cried when I thought the worst. I’m not telling any details, but the story is one I will probably read more than once. And with all the books I have, that doesn’t happen very often. Give it a chance – I loved it.
