“The Unity Game” by Leonora Meriel is an intelligent, well-written novel, with an astute structure. The characters are well-developed save for Elspeth. Those well-developed characters include both human and alien life forms.
The world-building is a mixture of contemporary and alien worlds. I did find the contemporary settings an easier read than the alien owing to some of the longest sentences I have encountered in a book. Some of them were a lexicological marathon leaving me mentally gasping for air.
Several storylines come together by the end including those of a most unlikeable workaholic New York banker; a magnanimous, recently deceased London barrister and his granddaughter, Elspeth. Much of the book revolves around Noœ-bouk, an alien communicating through ‘symbol patterns’ rather than speech.
It is an intriguing and thought-provoking book. It’s part philosophy (Socrates and Plato make appearances), and part reflection on human nature including such emotions and concepts as anger, love, lust, freedom, duty, selflessness, individuality, and unity. Unity of what? You need to read the book.
It’s difficult to place this novel in any category, and what’s the point? I enjoyed it thoroughly. It kept me intrigued throughout though not an easy read, especially at the beginning. Recommended as an intelligent, different read, far removed from most books in popular genres.
If you want a simple, action-packed easy read this is NOT the book for you!
However, if you want a novel written from a powerful, mystical voice eliciting thoughts deep within your subconscious mind, read this book!
This novel is split into three main characters for the first while then intertwines into an amazing story of deep philosophical concepts. You are not meant to fall in love or even relate to the characters. you are meant to see possibilities through the perspectives of others. The writing quality and editing are wonderful and this book is not like most others you will read. It is slow at first with complex background and a build up of events containing deep messages along the way.
Give this book a read and see it through until the end! You wont be disappointed!
The Unity Game follows the story of four characters, David, Alisdair, Elspeth, and Noœ-bouk. The story is fast paced and the author has done a fabulous job of meshing the real world with another. I’m not a big fan of sci-fi yet I could not put down this book – it was just that riveting. Very interesting and different stories are woven into one single story with a dash of suspense and romance. The philosophical touches are a pleasant surprise, making this book a fascinating read. The author’s style of writing is strong, descriptive and transports the reader into a beautiful fantasy world.
What if there were no consequences?
I loved the way this book touched upon life and death and anything beyond and above. Its message is ambitious indeed but also conveyed in a manner that made the read both intriguing and the unfolding of events an impossible thing to predict – again something that I love in books! Of course, you can just read it as a tantalising story where the lives of several, very different, main characters unfold and intertwine to gradually reveal a truth that might surprise some readers.
overall, there is some real thought-inspiring imagination behind this work and the execution of plot and style is immaculate in a way that I can only admire for the ease by which the alien concepts behind, for example, Noæ-Bouk’s character are offered to the reader.
This story just keeps on growing as you read, weaving the strands of a clever finale, which feels both sad and triumphant. This is a real treat for the thinkers – and for those who just like aliens and sci-fi with a twist of realism!
The Unity Game follows the lives of four characters: David, Alisdair, Elspeth, and Noœ-bouk. In the prime of his life, David foregoes his passion for physics, science, and the love of his life for the pursuit of riches as an investment banker. At the end of his life, Alisdair has graciously accepted all of the goodness life had to offer, a fulfilling career as a barrister, a loving marriage, and a granddaughter who is the light of his life. Elspeth, Alisdair’s granddaughter, has turned her life away from the privilege of money in order to experience the freedoms known to those who refuse to conform to the usual life pattern. She refuses to go to university, instead she has spent her adult life indulging in drugs and sex, all the while maintaining her anonymity. Noœ-bouk is an alien life form whose sole purpose in life was to create an energy channel to improve all aspects of Home Planet, yet it has discovered it does not want to die, it wants to experience life outside of the Home Planet by joining the vessel fleet. Each of these characters independently review their life’s choices to find the meaning of their existence. The underlying sentiment of this story is that we are more alike than we are different, regardless of where we come from, we all need love and to help one another. This author has a deep understanding about the needs for humanity, channeling, and connecting with something bigger than us in order to feel plugged into a fulfilling life.
Can I rate this book any higher? Please! It’s the best story I’ve read in a long time. In a mixture of captivating fiction and speculation, The Unity Game will grip you right from the beginning. Following four different storylines which eventually intertwine at the end of the book, this novel ponders the idea of why humans feel as bleak as they do and what exactly happens after we die. Moving from a New York banker, to intelligent alien creatures, and a library that contains books of everyone’s lives, The Unity Game is a fast-paced novel that will leave you wanting more. No matter what genre you’re a fan of, I promise this book won’t let you down if you’re looking for an amazing read that will really stick with you long after you read the last page.
This is a different sort of sci-fi book that takes a look at life beyond death. It’s a fascinating journey that will make you think about heaven, the soul, good and evil, and the “unity” of the universe. To me, it has an underlying message that we are all the same, have the same feelings, no matter our race, or in this case, species. This is the second book I’ve read from this author, and both made me think about life and the consequences of our actions. The book follows three story lines. Past, present, and future merge to give the reader an insight into what this “unity game” is all about. I found it brilliant!
Other than some interesting ideas, this book was a waste of time. There were too many subplots going on at once and I still am not sure quite how they were all related when I got to the books end. I am no prude and enjoy a good sex passage but the character David was already a jerk without his sexual behavior. Don’t waste your time on this book.
I mindbender.
Immoral and ridiculous. I wouldn’t recommend this book to my dog, much less any person. It’s indecent.
The Unity Game by Lenora Meriel was a tale of three people’s life journeys; David, a New York stockbroker, Alisdair, a kind and intelligent English barrister, and an alien creature, who by the end of the book somehow all manage to unite to complete a task. It was different, it was scifi, it was paranormal, it was slice of life. It was refreshing. It made me think.
This was certainly different for me. This book was unique and fascinating. It was twisted and had me guessing of the possibilities that could have happened yet didn’t. Then wham!
Life is a thrilling but funny thing. It’s one thing go about your life with hints of what could actually be. I know some will get a different view of this book than I did. That’s fine. We are see a story in our own way. But for me, this was a remarkable read.
It made me think.
Side note: I know I’m vague with me review. However, if you want dive into a good mystery with a side of another life force, this maybe the book you are looking for. This is another highly recommended read!
The Unity Game is an interesting read; we follow the journey, and meet different characters and follow their lives which finishes in an interesting unexpected ending.
If you are looking for a something with twists and turns, then this read is for you.
What a marvellously intriguing book!
Characters with such depth and an amazing philosophical storyline.
Cleverly executed is the revealing of soul beneath the body.
What is important in life? What happens when we die? Do we care? Do we want to carry on living?
David, who at first I was routing for, made me sit back in my chair in horror towards the end. Madness arrives in the form of a supernaturally large owl and black outs.
The Unity Game is a complex, intricate compelling read. I recommend highly.
Wow. This book really caught me off guard. I cannot express how much imagination the author had enough. Well thought out and engaging, this book will really make you think about the way we view life and reality. I loved the cascade of different characters and the unique spin on life. I don’t want to be a spoiler so all I can really say is I highly Reccomend it!
The Unity Game is a story that revolves around the themes of life and death and the struggles of both. Through three storylines that eventually intertwine, the author brings each character to life with their own unique voices. Although I am not usually a fan of anything science-fiction or alien related, I found The Unity Game well-written and thought-provoking enough to thoroughly enjoy the book.
Thought-provoking.
I’ve read this book out of curiosity and was not at all disappointed. Masterfully crafted, it makes us delve on the purpose of our life(s), on the Universe of which we are a particle, on human behavior, and the meaning of our goals. In her attention-grabbing book, the author brings us into the worlds of characters who make us care for them however different or unreal some of them seem to be. I enjoyed reading the book and am thankful to the author for awakening me to this literary genre. Highly recommended for curious and metaphysical-oriented readers.
All is one, one is all, all is now. I’ve seen it expressed, but this is the first time I’ve ever seen it woven into a novel – and woven truly is the word. Multiple threads weave through this book, each with its own story, and as the reader, you know that these will all come together – but how? When? The author has done a marvelous job of creating a tapestry that eventually comes down to one single silver thread. This is a book that demands careful reading, understanding and thought – but it’s marvelous.
A fascinating book, following three lives that seem so different and unconnected. A beautiful connection of the every day to something universal and so much bigger. It’s thoughtful, beautifully written, with surprising sharp, visceral moments. It’s so hard to categorise this book, it’s philosophical, science fiction, and yet its also about the lives we lead here and now.
It’s pulls you in even when you don’t understand, and it’s compelling all the way through.
This one really makes you think about what happens to you after death. It was a cool twist on afterlife, how the universe began, and how all things tie together. A wonderful book!
