Another wonderful collaboration between Ms. Bright and Ms. Grafton in the adventures of a time traveling Jane Austen! I was completely charmed by this second novel and don’t tell anyone, but I think they have outdone themselves with this one! I loved it! I strongly recommend that you read the first book, ‘The Particular Charm of Miss Jane Austen’, as ‘The Unexpected Past’ picks up immediately after it.
“I’m in. I’ve only just found you Rose. I’ve no intention of letting go of you so soon.” (quote from the book)
As Aiden Trevellyan and Rose Wallace are finally on the same page, Jane Austen pops back into Rose’s life and completely upends it, again! She needs Rose to come back to 1813 with her, and Aiden willing agrees to go with them. But it takes some time before Jane is willing to tell them why. What a shocker it is when she does!
“Recalcitrant though time had been in recent days, Rose was conscious of its stillness, of its weight around her – around them both – as they stood enfolded in each other’s arms for the first time…” (quote from the book)
What can I say, but that the writing is seamless and the story flows so beautifully. There is humour, mischief, and poignancy. I loved the portrayal of Jane, Cassandra, their brothers, Charles and Edward, along with the rather irascible Mrs. Austen. The interactions of the characters, the etiquette of Regency times limiting the ‘togetherness’ of Aiden and Rose, made for such an entertaining read. It all came alive before my eyes. I must say, Jane Austen is such a mischievous and clever woman and lovingly conveyed.
“Let us be above vulgar economy, Mama.” “Let us drink French wine and eat ice whilst we may.” (quote from the book)
We learn more about the ‘power’ of the charm and where it came from. I think it was brilliantly conceived, and if we are lucky, another story may come from it.
I highly recommend this delightful novel.
I was fortunate to have won this book in a giveaway with no expectation for a review. I just couldn’t help myself!
I really enjoyed the first book The Particular Charm of Miss Jane Austen, so I was excited to read the second book. I found this book to be a entertaining read very well written. I personally enjoyed this book even more than the first one. Everything is back to normal at the start of the book and Rose and Aiden are finally starting to explore their feelings for each other. Things soon take an unexpected turn as Jane returns and what a story follows. I would recommend this book to everyone. I received an Advanced Readers Copy from the author and publisher and this is my honest review of the book.
(Thank you to the author and publisher for an advanced reader copy of this book! All opinions are of my own wording.)
The Unexpected Past of Miss Jane Austen (Austen Adventures, book 2) by Ada Bright and Cass Grafton
The second book of the series was even better! You will be taken on a very unexpected journey as Rose discovers part of her family, that she didn’t think was possible! This was a definite page turner and I love how it left off right from the first book! Great scenes in the book and you really feel like you are there.
I was left wanting more and loved the relationship developing between Rose and Dr. Trevellyan!
Another great book and I cannot wait for the next of the series!
The Unexpected Past of Miss Jane Austen (TUPoMJA) was fabulous. I started reading it immediately after finishing The Particular Charm of Miss Jane Austen. Having so enjoyed book 1, I had high hopes for TUPoMJA and I wasn’t disappointed.
Almost the entirety of the story takes place in 1813. It’s fun to read about Aiden and Rose attempting to follow 19th century etiquette and mores. The look at Jane’s family dynamics and interactions was delightful, as well. I’m no expert on the Austen family, so I’m going to assume the historical information referenced was well-researched and correct.
Like its predecessor, this story doesn’t feature many unexpected twists and turns (despite the title), but it’s heartwarming. I imagine almost anyone could find something to connect with, to relate to.
Overall, I highly recommend TUPoMJA. Read both books, really. They’re worth reading.
