Mara Dyer doesn’t know if she is crazy or haunted—all she knows is that everyone around her is dying in this suspenseful and “strong, inventive tale” (Kirkus Reviews). Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there. It can. She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and … remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.
She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.
She’s wrong.
After Mara survives the traumatizing accident at the old asylum, it makes sense that she has issues. She lost her best friend, her boyfriend, and her boyfriend’s sister, and as if that weren’t enough to cope with, her family moves to a new state in order to give her a fresh start. But that fresh start is quickly filled with hallucinations—or are they premonitions?—and then corpses, and the boundary between reality and nightmare is wavering. At school, there’s Noah, a devastatingly handsome charmer who seems determined to help Mara piece together what’s real, what’s imagined—and what’s very, very dangerous.
This fast-paced psychological—or is it paranormal?—thriller will leave you breathless for its sequel, The Evolution of Mara Dyer.

I wanted something dark and atmospheric to compliment the season, and this fit the bill – dark and spooky with just enough wit and romance to balance it out. I sped through this one, desperate to figure out answers, and while you don’t learn everything you want in this first installment, it gives you a compelling reason to pick up book number two!
Love, love, love this series. The characters are amazing and stay with you long after you’ve finished reading. You won’t be bored and there are plenty of twist to get your heart pumping.
No words. Reading this book gave me so many feelings. I hate the way the author left me on the edge. Noah Shawwwww, please marry me <333
I absolutely loved this book. It is definitely a page turner. There was not one boring part or chapter in this book, trust me.
One of my favorite characters is Noah. The way the author describes him is so perfect! He’s definitely every girl’s dream boy. I loved it because every page will have you guessing “What will happen next? – What will Mara do? – What’s going on?”. There is not one word that can describe my feelings for this book except for breathtaking. I wasn’t even finished reading the book when I recommended it to my friend.
This book was a really good read. It keeps you curious from the beginning and keeps you captivated throughout. I love how the writer doesn’t just tell us what is happening with Mara but allows us to gradually figured it out along with her. Its made more realistic when we see Mara’s family’s reaction to everything and they way they try to help her the way they think is best, which creates a weird dynamic. And Noah… Noah Shaw is the guy all girls wish they had. He is in no way perfect and is just as troubled as Mara which just makes them a great pair. Looking forward to reading the next book.
This book was amazing and emotional. I love the ptsd aspect and the love aspect within this book. The ending made so shocked,i can’t wait to read the next book
This was such a good book. I loved the characters and the situations they found themselves in. I loved the concept. I thought it was well written and well executed.
I absolutely loved this book. In full disclosure, I haven’t read the next two in the trilogy yet but book one just blew me away. It alternates between romantic and funny, with being down right haunting and scary.
The writing is incredible. I just loved every second of it. Wow.
Definitely kept you guessing!
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer started out great, got really dicey about two thirds in, then blew me away at the end.
First off, the cover. GORGEOUS! One of my favorites of the past year.
Now… Mara wakes up in the hospital after being inside an old building when it collapsed, killing three of her friends. She doesn’t remember the details of the night. Her family moves to give her a fresh start but the ghosts of her dead friends follow her.
This book really did not take me where I thought it would, where it started out as. For me, it began as a story of a haunted, tortured girl trying to deal with a tragedy. There were undercurrents of paranormal, and that was fine – it worked.
I loved the humor of the characters, even Mara herself had a teen-angsty-bitter-sarcasm that was easy to relate to. Noah, the romantic interest, comes across as sex addled comedian but was still somehow endearing. And, the token ‘black jewish bi sexual’ friend was great.
Then things got frantic. Too much was happening and it all became disconnected. Mara sees things that maybe aren’t there. People around her are dropping like flies. Her dad’s new case is becoming a real threat to the family. Noah has secrets of his own. Top that off with the stereo-typical queen bitch at school. Which, of course, leads to me being lost. What was I reading about again??
However, the last two pages surprised me and I will admit to being mildly intrigued by what the next installment will bring.
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin was an amazing book. It was a page turner all the way through!
While I was hoping for more of the creepy aspects, I still really enjoyed this book. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
Mara loses her best friend and her boyfriend in a freak accident, where she is left virtually unharmed. Her family moves afterwards to take her away from bad memories. At her new school, she meets a kindred spirit in her new boyfriend. I got addicted, and can’t wait to read the rest of the trilogy.
It’s a little angsty at times, but overall a really good book. The angst is pretty understandable due to the character’s current situation and environment.
Awesome book!! good ending, even though it lead to another book ( the evolution of mara dyer, also a great book ) its a 10/10
