Emma Smallwood, determined to help her widowed father regain his spirits when his academy fails, agrees to travel with him to the distant Cornwall coast, to the cliff-top manor of a baronet and his four sons. But after they arrive and begin teaching the younger boys, mysterious things begin to happen and danger mounts. Who does Emma hear playing the pianoforte, only to find the music room empty? … empty? Who sneaks into her room at night? Who rips a page from her journal, only to return it with a chilling illustration?
The baronet’s older sons, Phillip and Henry, wrestle with problems — and secrets — of their own. They both remember Emma Smallwood from their days at her father’s academy. She had been an awkward, studious girl. But now one of them finds himself unexpectedly drawn to her.
When the suspicious acts escalate, can the clever tutor’s daughter figure out which brother to blame… and which brother to trust with her heart?

Julie Klassen books are always long ones for me, but I never regret taking the time to read them. They always draw me in slowly and then hook me so securely that I find moments to read just a little more. I enjoyed this one with its flawed but realistic characters, and she created a believable situation that involved enough characters that I …
Great job by Ms. Klassen again. This is her version of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abby. A little bit gothic in nature, but only a little bit. Emma Smallwood must determine who is behind all the little dark acts in the manor and who she can trust and who she can’t. The male lead (don’t want to give away too much ) that Miss Smallwood ends up …
If I could, I’d give this 4.5 stars. I loved it! I didn’t think the resolution of Lady Weston’s character was realistically portrayed given what the reader is told 95% of her storyline. I don’t know why I love Klassen’s books as much as I do. Most of the time, it’s the same plot—not quite a lady falls for wealthy lord of the manor & they live …
I thoroughly enjoyed it–the setting, the characters and the suspense.
It was an interesting book. I wanted to marry the hero from the very beginning! I’ll read this author again for a good light read.
Loved this book; in fact, I love all of Julie’s books! One of the things I most enjoy about her books, and is amplified in The Tutor’s Daughter, is her pensive heroines. It adds weight and depth to the story that resolves beautifully rather than dramatically. Refreshing!
What a wonderful historical novel depicting social norms long gone. This story was informative, heart-rending, suspenseful at times and very capturing of my attention. It is well written and an excellent story. Loved it!
I loved the characters and the story was well written. I would love to read more by this author.
I liked some other books from this author. But at first for this one, I wasn’t sure about it! Once it started having more about the Lord in it and scripture, etc., I liked it quite well! And of course it turning out well with a good ending helps! Although as far as some relationships in a book, you’d like to find out more of how it went. Maybe if …
I thoroughly enjoy Julie Klassen’s writing! She is gifted in presenting a storyline that ebbs and flows, twists and turns, and transports one into a time of long ago. The reader is quickly drawn into the story and walks along with the characters throughout their trials and triumphs. The Tutor’s Daughter is a delightful read, with poignant insight …
Julie Klassen never disappoints, and this is no exception! The balance of suspense, romance, and the enduring wisdom of the Scriptures is perfect in this one! And what bookworm doesn’t love a bluestocking heroine? Emma is a joy!
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, it had several surprises, that kept you interested and wanting to not put the book down.
One of my favorites by Julie Klassen!
This is another of Julie Klassen’s books I truly enjoyed reading. It’s set in a time and place I love. Very good book.
Wonderful characters you want to know better so keep reading!
This book was interesting all the way to the end
