Steamy, sexy, and laugh-out-loud funny, THE TRUTH ABOUT COWBOYS is a new contemporary novel that will pull your heartstrings and steam up your e-reader… While I was off pitching in the big leagues, my family was back in the small town of Sweetwater, Texas, running the family ranch. Then tragedy hit and I discovered there were secrets that my family kept, problems they hid. I went home, left … went home, left behind the money, women, and fame. I took over the ranch and took care of my grandmother. I took over hiding the secrets. Then she came to town. A smart-mouthed, clumsy, too-smart-and-too-pretty-for-my-own-good city girl hiding out to write a book. She’s right here, on my property, in the cottage my grandmother rented her without my permission, and she sees too much. She knows too much.
Now suddenly my world is spinning, and she’s shoving a baseball back in my hand while baking cookies with my grandmother. She’s the devil and an angel all in one fiery little package. I decide I’ll wait her out. She’ll go back to the city. Only suddenly I don’t want her to leave, and everything I’ve settled for in my life isn’t enough. I want to play ball and I want her, but there’s that secret that won’t let go, but neither will she.

This book had it all… Sexy cowboys, a strong woman trying to find her way and the ups and downs of dealing with feelings from the past, current feelings and learning to trust again. Did I say sexy, asshole, cowboys…
This is another winner of a book by Lisa Renee Jones and I can wait to see more from Sweetwater, Texas.
The Truth about Cowboys is a sweet, fun romance filled with so many crazy moments between Jessica and Jason that you will have a smile on your face throughout.
Sweet sexy city girl meets sexy, broody cowboy on the side of the road in the rain. What could possibly go wrong from there? Well, you have to experience this story for yourself because it is one you don’t want to miss!
I also had the added enjoyment of listening to the audio version of this book and the narrators did a fantastic job of giving the characters the perfect voice.
This was just not the book for me. The writing was off IMO. It didn’t flow the way I would like, and it was really wordy. I understand an enemies to lover book, but it seemed like they were way more enemies than lovers. Jessica seems really ditzy to be a lawyer. The way she acted at the beginning of the book seemed more young adult than grown woman. Jason was a jerk plain and simple. I understand having problems with a “city girl” because of his past, but he never really gets over them. He’s constantly assuming the worst of Jessica, and she just puts up with it. I would have loved a turn around in him, and to be able to root for them to be together, but I couldn’t. He’s a jerk till the end, and with a simple apology, Jessica goes right back. Although this was a first for me from this author, I would be willing to give her another read.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
I loved the alpha cowboy Jason, and the smart mouthed city girl Jessica a divorce attorney. He has commitment issues and Jessica finding her fiance’ banging his secretary in Jessica’s new high
rise condo has no use for men. Jessica takes off from Dallas to Sweetwater, TX to write a book about
How to Divorce. Of course her car breaks down the way to the Double JJ Ranch, and she is rescued by
Jason the owner. Jason is wary of Jessica and her reasons for being on his ranch. Jessica hates his
condescending attitude. Jason’s grandmother and Jessica hit it off and become besties. The
chemistry Ms. Jones has written between Jessica and Jason is hot and steamy. The kindness
Jason’s grandmother shows toward Jessica is a wonderful addition to the story line. Although
Jason is wary of Jessica and doesn’t trust her his jealousy for her keeps the story line steamy.
I enjoyed this book and the narration by the sexy voice of Sebastian York and great interpretation of the smart mouthed Jessica by Andi Arnd
This was a fun, entertaining, and sweet journey to go on Jason and Jessica. They both have some issues trusting, they have a back and forth relationship with each other, but they develop a cute friendship. I enjoyed the ride they went in discovering what they could have if they let go of the past. I adored this story.
There are many things I liked about this book.
I liked Jessica. I liked how she was written as a woman. She is a woman who is hurt and trying to figure out where she wants to go in life. I love her relationship with Grandma and also the men on the ranch. She is a city girl who belongs in the country.
The part I didn’t like about the book was how Jessica and Jason kept going round and round. They kept slinging the same accusations at each other and it got old.
The characters just didn’t grab me- story had potential but in my opinion missed the mark
It’s a cute predictable romantic story. Compared to her other story lines, this one is on the boring side. Not interested in reading her other “cowboy” story lines. If you are looking for more of the Walker brothers type this is not the book.
Sorry, This book was written for no more than high school level readers. Immature and predictable.
“The Truth About Cowboys” is not the typical kind of book that I have read from this author, but it was a really good book. Jason is a former pro baseball player but things happen, and he finds himself back in Sweetwater, Texas running the family ranch and taking care of his grandmother. I honestly think that most of the time granny was taking care of him. Jessica needs a break from her life as a divorce lawyer in the worse way, so she rents a cottage and heads to Sweetwater to try her hand at writing. She doesn’t expect to run into a cowboy who is rude and hot headed and those are nice ways of saying what his attitude is. But Jessica doesn’t mince her words with Jason and she doesn’t let him run her off. No, she becomes really great friends with his grandmother, and they bake and eat cookies together all the time.
I highly recommend this one, not romantic suspense, but it is loaded with humor, drama, romance and just enough angst to keep it interesting.
This was a cowboy romance with a side of sports romance. Jessica and Jason have enough baggage between them to be away for a very long time. There are ups and downs as they work through it all and arrive at their HEA. Grandma needs her own story too!
Great story
The Truth about Cowboys can sometimes be good but then you have Lisa Renee Jones version of it making you wonder if all we know about cowboys is false. We have Jessica coming out of a long romance she thought was going somewhere and Jason an ex-baseball players trying to be the cowboy his family wanted him to be. Two people who really are missing something from each other’s life yet afraid to really get into. Jessica is all about being independent even though she has always been in a relationship but at the same time doesn’t know how to well be single. An ex-divorce attorney trying to write a book about cowboys and romance is not something you expect from her yet she is determined. Jason seems to at every part in the book not know what to do with her. One minute he wants her out, then he is kissing her crazy and Jessica well not sure how to handle everything. The one thing about the book that made it funny was Martha, matchmaking grandmother extraordinaire. I loved how even these two are always bickering she is really the glue that brings them together. All in all it was funny to read and cannot wait to see what Lisa Renee Jones has in store for book 2.
“I received an eBook copy from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own.”
I really enjoyed this book, although I did want to not so gently remind Jason of what trust was after he said he trusted but clearly went back on his word.
It’s a fine line between love and hate. Grandma says it often and completely recognized it for what it was. It. Was. Hot! Just waiting for a spark to ignite and .
It’s a story of self-discovery and acceptance. It’s getting over fear. It’s love of family, blood and otherwise. It’s loyalty. It’s a love story with humor and angst and a whole lotta rain!
I look forward to more on this series!
I’m not generally a fan of cowboy romances, but the description of “The Truth About Cowboys” by Lisa Renee Jones sounded so good that I decided to take a chance on it. I’m glad I did because I really enjoyed this book. I laughed out loud quite a few times, and I found Jessica, the female main character, to be relatable and very likeable. I think she and I could be friends if she were a real person.
I found Jason, the male main character, to be very likeable too. I especially appreciated how devoted he was to his grandmother and the ranch workers whom he made a part of his family. I always like to read about “curmudgeonly” heroes who soften as they fall in love, and that could certainly describe Jason in this book. He went through a lot of changes over the course of the story. In the beginning, he told Jessica point blank that he never laughed, but by the end, he laughed often, even if it was sometimes at Jessica’s expense. (Poor Jessica – she was rather clumsy sometimes, and her struggles against Mother Nature were often unintentionally funny. I lost count of how many pairs of shoes she lost to the mud!)
While I found the characters to be well-developed and endearing, I did have a few questions about the plot of this book. For example, why exactly was the ranch in such bad financial shape when Jason’s parents died, and why couldn’t he collect on their life insurance policies? Also, I’m not sure that Jessica’s initial plan for Martha’s bakery was very well thought out. Martha may have been in good health for her age, but she still wasn’t a young woman, and it was an awful lot to expect her to take on all of the baking for their business. It was a much better plan to sell Martha’s cookie recipe and let someone else do the baking for them. Finally, it wasn’t clear to me how Jason planned to make money from his baseball camps. Did he plan to host skills camps for kids or fantasy camps for adults? Either way, it seems like there would have been more up front costs and preparation involved than just building a baseball field, such as finding (or building) places for participants to stay while at the camps.
In any event, I did enjoy this story and my introduction to the town of Sweetwater, Texas. Hopefully the author plans to write more stories set there, particularly one featuring Jason’s best friend, Roarke. He seemed like a pretty great guy and deserves to find a special someone of his own.

I am not usually a fan of cowboy stories in any fashion, however I really enjoy this author so I gave it a shot and it was a good story. The writing as with any book I have read by this author was exceptional and really helped me to envision the story as I was reading it. Jason and Jessica at times were the characters that you love to hate and have both been burned before and bring that baggage with them as they try to make things work with each other. I reviewed an advance reader copy of this book provided by Netgalley for an honest review.
Cowboys aren’t my usual read, but this baseball player turned cowboy got my heart and Jessica and Jason story of enemies to lovers changed my mind about them. It was a very enjoyable read, funny and sweat. He is all for protecting who he loves, and a girl with a past. Totally recommended for a nice relaxing read.
Tons of fun, easy read, kept interest the whole time.
I loved everything about this story! Jessica had so much going on that you just want to hug her and then be her personal cheering section as she learned how to put her life in motion again, despite one arrogant a–hole cowboy. Said, cowboy, Jason had his own issues to deal with like putting his dreams on hold, taking care of a ranch and everyone on it, including his grandmother.
Take one jilted, lost city girl and mix with one gunshy, screwed over arrogant cowboy, add-in one ‘she just wants peace for all’ and love you till you smile grandmother, then you have a recipe for tears and frustration, love and laughs.
Lisa Renee Jones knocked it out of the park! (Pun intended. )
P.S The bonus content of the paperback was a fun treat. As are the bonuses in the e-book 😉

Holy. Snow. Ball. Heaven!
While I do love Lisa Renee Jones’ back list, The Truth About Cowboys is hands down my favorite book by her. I will be going to my local store to find this bad boy so I can have it in my hands when I reread this baby.
Since this is a review, I have to be honest with you. I did not read the blurb when my review manager asked one of us to review this book. It was not because it was a LRJ book, it was because the title had me at “Cowboys” no matter what it was about. You stick Cowboys in the title and this girl is running.
Now, down to the gritty stuff.
Jessica, the lovely Jessica. This girl is a kick a** divorce attorney in Dallas and totally slaying it until her worst, well any woman’s worst nightmare, comes about. Catching your fiance sticking his dick in another woman, his secretary no less is not something you cannot unsee. After that nightmare, her career is in shambles and she is left picking up the pieces in a little Texas cottage while writing a How-To Divorce book.
Enter Jason, the cowboy himself, whew. That man is a walking ad for Wrangler jeans, well in my mind he is. Jason had a great career going as a baseball player up until his parents died and he moved back to Texas to run the ranch. Like Jessica, Jason has been hurt as well, just not in the same way.
What do you get when you have two broken-hearted, hard-headed, and stubborn people? Fighting as well as the whole love/hate thing.
The chemistry between Jason and Jessica is burning hot and the more they deny it, the hotter it gets. While I loved the banter between them, I did get annoyed at times because it did seem a bit repetitive. But, when you have two stubborn people, it is bound to happen.
I can go on and on about why you need to read this but if I do I am going to tell you about the entire book. If I do that, then what is the point? Let me say this though, I do not give out five-star ratings often and lately, they have been few and far in between. Not to mention a book holding my attention long enough for me to devour it within a day has not happened in quite some time. Needless to say, I say, jump on this book and jump on it now!!
