“Smart, sexy, and oh-so romantic.” —Mary Balogh, New York Times bestselling author THEY CALL HIM THE DUKE OF MURDER… The gossips whisper that the new Duke of Murdoch is a brute, a murderer, and even worse–a Scot. How can one not be enchanted with a happy return to the Windhams. New readers to Grace Burrowes can enjoy without reading other Windham books. Grace Burrowes returns us to the center of the Windham family with the story of Megan, daughter of Anthony Windham. No surprise but she comes in contact with a new Duke from Scotland who is none too happy about time required in England. He is accompanied to England by his brother and two sisters for the Season. Megan becomes friends with the Duke offering to help ease him into his new position starting with dancing lessons. Megan in the meanwhile also tries to extract herself from a suitor who is pressing marriage. How Megan and the Duke meet and the friendship between the two is developed nicely. A few of the Windhams make appearances which bring highlights from past books but will not take away from those of you who would like to go back and read more stories of this family. **Side note skipping the bedroom pages (very few) will not take away from this wonderful story.
Oh-So-Romantic is Right!
I’m a huge fan of Grace Burrowes, loving her writing style, storylines and amazing characters. I’ve been purchasing her books for some time and only recently realized that the Windham Brides series has been sitting in my rather large TBR file yet to be read. It feels like Christmas!
Hamish and Megan in Book 1, “The Trouble With Dukes” have stolen my heart. He is easily one of my favorite heroes, and his and Megan’s story is sweet and oh so romantic. And of course, the Windham extended family, especially Westhaven, Rosecroft, Valentine and Keswick were simply captivating. Oh, and can’t forget the Duke and Duchess of Moreland!
I absolutely loved this book! Ms. Burrowes is a master storyteller. In “The Trouble with Dukes” she weaves a story of past war horrors, PTSD and the unrelenting and thoroughly exhausting months of a London season. Hamish MacHugh suddenly finds himself the new Duke of Murdoch and he reluctantly agrees to host his two sisters to a London season. Hamish soon finds out that a London season is infinitely worse than the horrors he faced on the battlefield.
Megan Windham is facing her own demons in the form of Sir Fletcher. She foolishly thought she was in love before Sir Fletcher left to fight the French. She also penned her devotion to him in racy letters that he’s kept and is now using against her. He needs a wealthy wife and Megan fits the bill, except, Megan despises Sir Fletcher. When she meets Hamish, she finds a true companion in the brutish Scot and a beautiful romances blossoms. Together they face each battle, strategizing as if they were conducting a war. Can a battle-worn soldier and a compromised young woman defeat their foe and come out the victors?
Ms. Burrowes is such a talented writer as she slowly draws the reader in and captures them until the final word is finished. This book is one of the best regency romances I’ve ever read. I highly recommend it to fans of regency fans.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Grace Burrowes knows the most entertaining and interesting people. Megan and Hamish are so enjoyable to watch as they discover each other and life’s possibilities.
One of my favorite authors, fun and easy read
I always enjoy Grace Burrows books
Great love story with a lot of explicit details.
I really enjoyed this book but realize I need to read the earlier Windham books, especially Cowlick, Worsthaven and Rosebud! Many thanks to the author
Although we all know the guy will get the girl – or vice versa – Ms. Burrowes makes the process great fun to read. Her characters are lively, realistic, intelligent; her plots take twisted turns and byways, increasing your enjoyment and pleasure.
We all need a family that fiercely protects its members against harm. Love this one.
I enjoy Grace Burrowes’s books and this one was no exception.
The story was great. I liked the characters and the plot.
I have read many of Grace Burrowes books, enjoy them all. This is one of my favorites.
Loved it!
If it says Grace Burrowes, you’re in for a treat!
Apparently there is an 8 book series that precedes this and might have helped with some of the context for this, but otherwise the story got along fine.
I won this book from Goodreads Giveaways for a honest review. This was a wonderful story about a young woman who was being blackmailed by letters she wrote to a solider that she met but then got the cold shoulder from when he got back but now he needs her dowry. Him being a 3rd son he didn’t want to work to support himself. Along comes a very handsome Scottish Duke, who just received his title and tries to help her. But he’s afraid to fall for her because he isn’t sure if he feels normal. What we now call PTSD in soldiers returning from war this is what a lot of these men suffered when coming back from fighting Nepolean. But with a lot of twist and turns these two have a lot of things to overcome to find love. I love this story and can’t wait to find out what happens with the rest of the sisters in this story line.
