Jinx Whitethorn….nomen es omen
„The Trouble with Beast“, first installment in the “Howl for the Damned” Series by D. Fischer, combines fast-paced action and wonderful depicted characters to a very enjoyable urban fantasy story.
Jinx Whitethorn has a problem… or three… First, these attackers coming out of nowhere, then the fainting spells at the most inopportune moment, and finally a propensity to wake in unintended places with no recollection whatsoever of how she ended up there. For good measure just add the fact that she is a witch with not magic of her own whatsoever…. At least something seems to be working out for her… she is obviously dodging her attackers just fine… if she only could make a rhyme of it all. Thus, for now, she contents herself with helping at Cinder’s bar, her friend and landlord (not that she ever makes the rent in time, or at all…)
Jacob Trent has another set of problems of his own, as Alpha of the Riva Pack he has taken on the responsibility to fight the rogue shifters that are attacking his territory and slowly decimating his pack, while trying to ignore the need to find a suitable mate, in spite of the not so subtle nudges of his pack members.
Determined to solve their problems, Jinx unearths the family secrets (just to end up wishes they have been remaining buried forever), while Jacob, in the course of trying to solve the rogue murders, stumbles right in the middle of Jinx secret.
It is a perfect storm, Jacob’s “solution” to the situation is to abduct Jinx… let us just say it was probably not his best moment….
The plot develops nicely, the chemistry between Jacob and Jinx could really been cut with a knife . The rogue murders storyline is gripping with some unexpected twists, the romantic thread wholly enjoyable to the point of hilarity… Jinx is a wonderful character, strong in spite of all shortcomings, while Jacob is really just an Alpha out of his deep, at the end…… no! not spoiler here… get the book… you won’t be disappointed, not by a long shot
D. Fischer writing style is fast-paced and combines action and romantic elements into an absolute superb urban fantasy story, which absolute adorable and credible main characters and very good crafted secondary ones. This is the onset to a series, and I just cannot wait to read the next installment.
Another amazing book by the talented D Fischer. Wolf shifters, witch’s, and skinwalker’s what’s more to love in a fantasy book? How about romance and date bringing mates together and expanding on an already amazing set of books and characters we already love and adore! Can’t wait for book two <3
It begins with a nightmare that turns out to be all too real. A gruesome trail of dead bodies that seem to tell one story while simultaneously contradicting it. This action filled story is also a tale of self-discovery and redemption, with a bit of tender, burgeoning relationship type romance that stays clean.
Jinx is the kind of girl who makes her self at home, raids your fridge, and gets around to introductions later. Fiercely independent, she makes her own way – until she starts blacking out. Despite he way if wiggling herself into people’s lives, she’s never really belonged. Jacob is the stoic leader, dealing with the harsh aftermath of a devastating war, trying to protect his people – and himself.
This is book 1 in a spin off series, but can be read enjoyably without having read any other books in this world. Fair warning, if you haven’t read any of Fischer’s other books you will probably want to after reading this one!
This is a fantastic read. I love stories that involves wolfes. I love this kind of story and the way the Author has brought it to fruition. Its a fast paced read that is action packed. And fantastic world building. It has epic scenes, I could picture in my minds eye the scenes being played out. This is definitely a must read.

I don’t always read shifter series; too many are poorly written. This however is a series sculpted into life by a master storyteller. No matter the genre if it is written by D. Fischer, it is worth reading!
Meet Jinx Whitethorn, a witch without magic. She left the coven of her birth, unwelcome with no magical talents. But that is the least of her current troubles. She is being hunted by a group of shifters with a brand on their necks.
Jinx has no idea who they are or why they are out to kill her. In fact she doesn’t know how she has remained alive until now. At each moment she thinks she will certainly die, she blacks out, only to come to herself later in a different place.
Jinx doesn’t know what is wrong with her and has no one to turn to for help. She doesn’t want to endanger her closest friend, another witch, and she doesn’t know if she can trust the shifter who lets her crash above his bar. He is a shifter after all even if he doesn’t sport a brand on his neck.
Will Jinx unravel the mystery of the branded shifters who pursue her?
This is the first book I have read by author D. Fischer and it certainly will not be my last! I was pleasantly surprised at how easily and quickly her writing style, character build-up and story-line foundation hooked me in. I actually got myself into trouble with the Mrs. the first day I started reading this book because I lost track of time and forgot to get anything out for dinner, let alone do any of the laundry we had piled up The Trouble With Beasts is full of kick-ass girl power, smoldering fantasy and paranormal action that will leave you wanting more! I know I am very much looking forward to the next two books in the series!
I really enjoyed this series. I love Jinx as a character in general. I understand her and I feel for her which shows how well she is written. I also love that she is a little sassy-pants. I love Jacob too. I also feel for him and I think the descriptions of his PTSD are beautifully done so that someone who has never dealt with that, can still relate and understand the trauma he is dealing with on a fairly constant basis.
The story progresses naturaly and there is a very nice flow to the tale. I like how it unfolds without hitting you with everything at once. I love that each character will slowly build into a cast that you love.
Great story!! I totally recommend it and I can’t wait for book 2.
While this is a standalone series, I do think it would have been helpful for me to have read the Rise of the Realms series first, just so I had some back story. So that’s my warning. Having said that, it wasn’t a huge hinderance and I was easily able to follow this story. I just like to have the full picture. LOL
I wasn’t sure what to expect going in. I will be honest when I saw the comparison to the Mercy series I laughed.
I’m not laughing anymore.
Fischer brought her A-game
I don’t give a lot of 5-star reviews.
A story has to truly entrance me, engage all my emotions.
It has to keep me up well past the witching hour.
The trouble with beasts did that.
I truly felt a part of the pack.
The world-building was stunningly crafted.
I felt the rain beating on my skin, the heat from the sun warming my face.
The story line was easy to follow
Jinx is a witch with no magic. Never quite feeling like she fits she strikes out from the coven to find herself. This lands her living above Cinder’s bar.
Let’s just say life from there forward is full of one near miss after another.
The cast members – Loved, Loved them!
Jinx – I think her name pretty much sums up her life
A sassy little bundle of dynamite
Jacob is the local pack Alpha. He is strict but fair –
He has some past ghosts that haunt him
Cinder has taken Jinx under his wing he is a bit of a player
Glenda is the grandma who takes no lip
Reese is the packs’ doctor who has an unrequited crush on a certain alpha
Amelia is the psychologist who is trying to mend the emotional wounds the war left behind
Sara is a witch and Jinx’s BFF
There are quite a few more characters but you get the idea
A well-rounded cast that compliments the story and each other
There are a few small scene errors and some minor issues that pulled me from the story – normally yes, that would knock down my rating right away. But when I stumble across a story that truly captivates me and leaves me hesitant to close the pages I make exceptions.
That is what a fictional world should do, yes?
Keep me captivated, provide a chance to be someone or somewhere else?
I will be moving on to the next in series (it is in KU)
Wow, this is the first book I read of this author and I will say this book was great. It kept you wanting to read to see what will happen next. We have some mystery, action, and suspense. Jinx is a witch with no power. She blacks out and her mother won’t answer her why. She left her coven and living on top of a bar that Cinder owns. Hoping to find a place to fit in, since she has not magic. There is someone after her and she don’t know who. Jacob is alpha of his pack and Cinder belongs to the pack. There has been murders and he is trying to find out who. What will Jinx do to protect herself? What will Jacob do to find out who is doing it? What will happen when they meet? Will he find out her secret? I received a free copy for my honest review.
This is the first book I have read by the author and I will definitely be reading more. If a book could be described by a television show, it would be reminiscent of the new drama FBI: Most Wanted with a paranormal twist. Filled with vivid descriptions and stellar characters, the pages just keep turning as readers try, along with the female lead, to ascertain why she is being hunted. Jinx is a witch with no power who has been sent away from her coven. Not one to be left unaware, she grew up learning how to fight and protect herself. When she befriends Cinder, the owner of a bar and member of the Riva Wolf Pack, she gets more than she bargains for. Jacob is the alpha of the pack who is leery of Jinx and is determined to get to the bottom of things without letting her get under his skin. This is one captivating story that effortlessly blends references of Native American culture with paranormal flair. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.
Jinx Whitehorn, a witch without a gift, has a heritage even she doesn’t realize, and it’s something she may never have fully understood had she not gone head-to-head with Jacob Trent, the alpha of the Riva pack. She has some evil men after her, and when Jacob vows to protect her and help her learn about where she truly comes from, his entire pack is at risk. Yet, there’s something about her that has him turning his world upside down, and secrets and magic could mean the end of everything.
I found the entire story fascinating, especially the Native American references. I believe even though authors take some poetic license when it comes to history and research, there are times when the reader can tell how deeply the author dug to come up with a believable story. This is one of those times. The plot was exciting. The characters were captivating. And the story was enchanting as well as exciting. I’m on the edge of my seat in anticipation for the next book in the series.
This world and these characters that D. Fischer has built is flawless. Jinks Whitethorn is the perfect expression dynamite comes in small packages. She is a magicless witch who for some unknown reason, has someone after her and she doesn’t know why. Her coven has pretty much abandoned her due to her unwitchyness. Luckily for her she has befriended Cinder, a bar owner who happens to be a shifter. And can we talk about his alpha, like just all around sexy, brooding perfection. When these men attack her she blacks out, they end up dead, and she ends up safe. While Jinks has honed her body and fights skills, she shouldn’t be able to do the damage to them that has been done
In this book we get to meet Jacob, Cinder and Jinx. Jacob is an Alpha of the The Riva Pack.
Jinx, she is a witch with no magic? Well, kinda? Okay, so Jinx is the type of girl that can kick your ass and look good doing it. She trains hard and fights harder. She can defend herself from the most fearsome guys out there. She is smart, sexy and kind. Her instincts are always spot on. She is being hunted and she doesn’t know why, yet. She befriends Cinder who is the owner of the bar she lives above. Her Coven, the Lotus Coven, well her mom’s coven is not too accepting it seems of her. And with this I felt so bad for her. LIke she wasn’t sure where she fit in and it felt like her mom, well, like her mom pushed her away. She seemed to be on her own in more ways than just physically.
Jacob, with the trauma he suffered during the Realms War. What tragedy his pack suffered, what they still suffer. It’s so sad. I would love to learn more of that war. Taking care of the pack or who is left. Cinder is a part of that pack. Jacob is intelligent and caring but cautious. Suffering from PTSD he does his best to help all who need it.
Who is hunting Jinx and why? When Jinx and Jacob meet, sparks fly. When Jacob learns that Jinx is involved in the murders of the shifter he immediately gets involved as it is his territory. Taking her to his home is just the beginning.
In this story you will have all the drama, the tension and the need to keep reading. You will not want to put this read down. I absolutely loved this book. I highly recommend this as your next read.
Go get lost in this book tonight!
This was sooo cool! A wolf that is not a shifter. A witch without magic. And Jinx who can really kick butt! I loved it!
