WINNER OF THE JAMES HERBERT AWARD FOR HORROR WRITING “The Troop scared the hell out of me, and I couldn’t put it down. This is old-school horror at its best.” –Stephen King Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip–a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfire. But when an … roaring bonfire. But when an unexpected intruder stumbles upon their campsite–shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungry–Tim and the boys are exposed to something far more frightening than any tale of terror. The human carrier of a bioengineered nightmare. A horror that spreads faster than fear. A harrowing struggle for survival with no escape from the elements, the infected…or one another.
Part Lord of the Flies, part 28 Days Later–and all-consuming–this tightly written, edge-of-your-seat thriller takes you deep into the heart of darkness, where fear feeds on sanity…and terror hungers for more.more
Kinda like Lord of the Flies meets Saw! This book isn’t like either Golding’s classic or the (amazingly fabulous) movie, but somehow made me think of both. Love the way it switches between “official reports” to give you the backstory and the action on the island. Love the ending! I have a VERY strong “literary stomach” – stuff doesn’t scare me …
Creepy but I couldn’t put it down!
Usually I’m fairly tolerant of gore in horror novels, but this one crosses the line. The descriptions of animal torture are too extended and graphic even for me. Not recommended unless you love eight pages of kitten torture.
Wasn’t sure I was going to like this book, but I did. Nicely written and just the right amount of horror.
Recognizing the various advances in science and how things can go horribly wrong with various experimentations, this story realistically depicts how such an event can horribly disrupt the the adventures of a troop of boys. A wonderful adventure of the Troop with amazing character development of each boy comes to a horrifying conclusion much as …
This book, while well written, is predictable for the horror genre. I didn’t finish it because I knew what was going to happen. The author has a gift for description and detail. But, this is the plot where the antagonist kills each character one by one by one.
Reading it was like being there with the characters enduring all the horror and imagining the fear. A great read.
Very very scary and tense and twisted! You’ll love it!
This book is not for the faint of heart. It starts out normal enough, but little by little takes the reader through some really terrifying scenes. I had nightmares! Not for everyone, but if you want to read a book that will cause you double think big pharma, the military, what happens to normal’ teenagers faced with horrifying dangers, then this …
This book made my skin crawl in a way no horror book ever has. It’s a two-part horror story- one being a monster and another being very human. Great read!!
Amazing read! Nick Cutter (pseudonym) blends case files, current scenes, past scenes, interviews, and articles seamlessly to provide the reader with the perfect amount of information. While reading you just want to scream the stuff you know to the young boy scouts! Alright, I don’t want to spoil it but it’s a great spooky read! Five stars!
This book was sick! Great read.
Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads his troop of boys to an isolated island. He does this every year so the boys can earn their badges. What he doesn’t know is that it is his last year to do this. This was a gruesome, tragic, hold on to your seat horror. I loved everything about it. I felt the interviews and ads that were between the chapters were needed …
When I read that Stephen King found this book horrifying, I knew I had to give it a try. Couple that with the fact that I was a Scoutmaster and Scouter for over 24 years and I had to read it.
A group of Canadian scouts are weekending on an island near Prince Edward Island when a strange diseased man comes running into their campsite. Their …
