I enjoyed this book immensely. Joanna Rodgers arrived in Hays, Kansas full of hopes and dreams. She came as a Mail Order Bride, but her hopes were dashed immediately when her Husband to be Bradley McKenna stepped forward to claim her. He was not who he portrayed himself to be. He was dressed as a farmer and much older than he had said. He smelled of whiskey!
She managed to escape him and ended up in the woods lost and alone. Then she stepped in an animal trap. She was in a pickle. She ended up with her foot dangling in the brook, all night sleeping on the ground. Jared Steele out on his rounds of his traps found her there.
Rescued she felt safe and very attracted to Jared. She moved to town to stay with his brother and wife while she let her ankle heal.
Jared was a man that had been scorned by a woman’s lies and chose to live alone in the forest. He was an honorable man but had no way to prove the woman lied about him. Joanna’s groom was not going to let go easily either. These two have to find a way to solve their predicaments and find their HEA.
Barbara Goss is one of my favorite Authors. Her stories always have heart and soul. The characters interact with each other so well and their story just dances along.
This was a wonderful story with great narration!! I liked how these two met, and thought it was so unique. I also loved that his family was involved in their future together! Barb did a fantastic job on creating the protagonist’s reasonable ploy!!
The narrator nailed it! Perfect voice for this story and time period!!
Look What I Caught!
I’ve long been a fan of author Barbara Goss’ clean, sweet tales and well-designed plots. This story follows a mail order bride who discovers quickly that the groom-to-be dissembled in his letters about his character, his life style, and his age. Repelled, and concerned for her virtue, she runs away, only to fall into another trap. Literally. Hey, this is the wilderness still! Susan Fouche’s excellent narration gives an additional dimension to the characters.
This is a great and sweet slow burn, Historical Western, and mail-order bride. I love Joanna and Jared’s story. The storyline has a little suspense, and some twists and turns. I love the happy ending. The secondary characters are also great. I love Amelia and Ross. Barbara Goss never disappoints. Susan Fouche did a great job with the narration.
I listened to the audio version of this book. The story was a sweet, slow burn romance that has all the elements of an old western. There’s the mail order bride, the town drunk, the guy who is good to the bone, the jealous woman trying to get the good guy back and the HEA. Barb Goss adds all the details and extras that make this a truly enjoyable story.
I was given this complimentary audio book. All thoughts are my own.
A mail order bride on the run from the drunk she is supposed to marry gets injured in a trap. The trapper helps her and feelings emerge. But is he only being kind because of guilt and can he keep her safe from the drunk who won’t give up. The narrator does a wonderful job. I received a complimentary audio and this review is voluntary.
The Trapper
By: Barbara Goss
Narrated by: Susan Fouche
Just when I need a good listen, Barbara Goss releases an audiobook. A little bit of everything included, I was able to enjoy a slow burn romance, a little suspense, a new beginning and a lot of hope and love! When Joanna comes to Hayes to marry, she anticipates a young ranch owner, but is greeted with a drunk man, much older than she expects who owns a pig ranch. Escaping her certain fate of marriage, she hurts her foot and is rescued by Jared, a trapper who lives in a cabin in the woods. Can this be her destiny? I love a good old fashioned western, and Goss always makes sure I get a good flavor of that time period. With the old hotel, the saloon and even a gunfight we are transported back in time to enjoy this romance. Old flames, new flames and good family ties all thrown in, this is a feel good, warm hearted book.
Susan Fouche does a spectacular narration of this book. Her talent is used to the max with the characters, from Joanna and Jared all the way to the town gossips! She has an incredible array of voices, and each one shines with personality. She is the perfect choice for this portrayal.

Sweet Romance!
I just love this kind of story – such sweet romance.
It begins with a huge disappointment in Joanna’s mail order intended husband and of course she has to get away from him and meet up with Jared and they fall in love.
This reminded me of the old time Westerns that my dad used to take me to see which always had a bad guy, a great good guy and a lovely young lady and though each movie was quite different, we always knew that the good guy would win the love of the lady in the end. (Sigh!)
And that ending! Oh so swoony!
Barbara Goss’ stories remind me of those lovely old Westerns. Need I say more?
Susan Fouche is a new narrator to me and she is remarkable in that she has a totally different and perfectly matched voice for each character. As examples, Jared’s father actually sounds like an older man and Joanna, like a sweet, young lady. Amazing talent!
I can confidently recommend this book/audiobook as I loved every second of it.
I listened to the audiobook version and my review above is given voluntarily and is unbiased.
