The action in this book just doesn’t quit. While out on a fishing trip Aubrey’s mentor is shot and she is kidnapped. That’s just in the first chapter. She escapes and she teams up with her former best friend, Jack, to find out who is responsible. Of course, along the way Jack and Aubrey discuss why they lost touch. There are lots of twists and turns in this book. I couldn’t put in down.
I highly recommend this book to everyone who likes a good mystery and romance book. There was no sex scenes or foul language anywhere in this book.
I was given an ARC of this book by the author for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.
Lisa Harris has another hit on her hands. The action and suspense are powerful, mesmerizing, and fast-paced. I think “crooked as a snake” is an apt description considering all the twists and turns the story takes, as well as the dealings of several of the characters. The challenge for Jack, Aubrey, and the other law enforcement officers was to figure out if anyone could be trusted. One of the things that draws me to Christian fiction is the faith element in most of the stories. I like to see how the faith of the characters plays out in their actions. As in the real world, they are faced with a multitude of situations and decisions that test not just their faith but their very being. We know it is possible to have faith, or to believe in God, but still make wrong choices. Over and over through the story, Jack and Aubrey, or Bree as he called her, were tested in ways that would have destroyed a weaker person. They kept doing the right things regardless of what others did. They had been best friends for a number of years until circumstances and poor communications got in the way. Could they renew the closeness they once had? Was there more at stake than just a close friendship? Could anything good come from them being “thrown” back together again? And would they ever learn the truth about Bree’s father? I am only scratching the surface with these questions. Read the book to learn how things turn out. You will be glad you did. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
High-octane, twists and turns, and a second-chance love story – what’s not to like?
I listened to the audio version of Traitor’s Pawn as I weeded my garden and cleaned house for a family gathering. The story kept me engrossed, trying to figure out if Aubrey and Jack were going to make it out alive. Lisa Harris throws obstacle after obstacle at her protagonists, and each is just stubborn enough to keep poking at the clues.
When FBI agent Jack Shannon is called in to investigate the shooting of a senator, he discovers that, yes, a senator was shot, but there was also a woman abducted. Learning that the woman was Aubrey Grayson, a former girlfriend of his, he is intent on finding her. When he also learns that her abduction may have possible ties to the case he is working on, he is determined to follow every clue.
A Houston police detective, Aubrey has come to expect threats but the ones she’s been receiving lately scare her a little more than the others. When she’s abducted from a hunting trip with the senator, her surrogate father, her fears come to fruition. Not only is Papps shot, but the men who take her appear to be Chinese. What in the world do these men want from her, and can she use her wits and her skills to take them down?
I liked both of the main characters, and most of the secondary ones. Aubrey has a very strong faith base, which gets her through the dysfunction of her family. I also love Harris’ writing style. It’s action-packed with twists almost every time the reader starts to get comfortable again. I can definitely recommend The Traitor’s Pawn to readers who enjoy a good romantic suspense story. Harris doesn’t disappoint!
Lisa Harris knows how to entertain and reach readers with every well-crafted adventure. Be prepared for an array of emotional responses to Traitor’s Pawn.
I appreciate everything Lisa writers. She is definitely gifted in her genre. For some reason, this book wasn’t my favorite from her, but I can’t put my finger on why! That’s not to say it wasn’t good, just not my favorite. I can’t quite decide what didn’t jive with me. Maybe it was my mood! COVID19 Quarantine has been a doozy, and getting back into the habit of reading was a hard one for me. Let’s chalk it up to that!
The plot was intriguing, well thought out, and believable. I enjoyed the characters, but didn’t quite connect with them at first. I appreciate Aubrey’s logical framework, but I didn’t warm to her right away. I enjoyed Jack, a lot, but wished there had been more of him. Overall, the plot definitely drove me more than the characters in the first part of the story. Despite those feelings, Harris will continue to be a “pre-order author” for me, and I may try this one again when life is a little more normal.
What I did love about this book were the high stakes at every turn. Government secrets, international spies, and family entanglements make each new revelation one that you’re not sure you can resolve by the end of the story. Harris definitely kept me guessing until the very end. As always, a strong spiritual thread (that isn’t pushy or overdone) runs throughout this book. The beauty of forgiveness was on display!
Lastly, CAN WE TALK ABOUT THAT COVER?! Breathtaking. Revell has really been kicking it up a notch, but whoever designed this needs a raise. I can’t stop staring at it. It is gorgeous.
I was given an early copy of this manuscript through NetGalley for my honest review. I also purchased this book in paperback. All opinions expressed are my own.
Lisa Harris does it again! Ending every chapter with a cliff hanger making it impossible to put this fast pace novel down.
She keeps you guessing to the end who the bad guy is and what the motive is. She cleverly ties the ends tighter than a Christmas package leaving you satisfied. I give the suspense part a 5 star but the romance of it a 4 star. Which I don’t mind because I do prefer action over the romance.
My favorite kind of novel starts right in the middle of the action! The Traitor’s Pawn kicks off with an attempted abduction as Aubrey Grayson tries to make sense of why anyone would want to kidnap her. Aubrey’s long-lost friend from childhood, FBI Agent Jack Shannon, happens to be in town with an investigation of his own. Their paths cross as Aubrey realizes her connection to the FBI investigation. Aubrey’s involvement in the case becomes personal when she finds out why she’s the target.
I’m a fan of Lisa Harris. Her novels are always action-packed with lots of plot twists. I enjoyed the super-fast pace of The Traitor’s Pawn. The chemistry between the two main characters worked well, as they had been childhood friends that never wanted to wreck a friendship to take a chance on a romantic relationship. I liked the fact that Aubrey was in law enforcement and became part of the investigating team. While Jack felt protective, Aubrey held her own and I enjoy stories with strong female leads.
The story had a lot of depth while delivering plenty of intrigue. This gets a definite “must read” from me. It’s definitely a page-turner.
Overall: 5 stars (I loved it, couldn’t put it down)
Suspense: 5 stars (Non-stop edge-of-your-seat suspense from start to finish)

The Traitor’s Pawn
By: Lisa Harris
REVIEW
Over the past year or so, I’ve read several books published by Revell and liked them all. The Traitor’s Pawn is the latest, and it did not disappoint. Two old friends, possible love interests, are embroiled in an investigation that neither anticipated. It turns personal for one of them, and the stakes get higher. I like this story because it’s a solid intriguing mystery that is not too heavy. It’s well balanced with a bit of suspense, action, romance and family drama. The characters are relatable and flawed. Overall, I would recommend for suspense and mystery readers looking for a lighter offering without so much grit and gore but still compelling and entertaining from the first page.
This is an incredible romantic suspense novel!
I absolutely love both of the main characters. They are very well developed and have many strengths and hangups that are very evident throughout the story. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing how the interacted with each other and the additional characters in the book.
The plot of the story was very intricately woven. We found out fairly early on who they were looking for but the twists and turns that occurred kept me guessing as to how it would all play out. There were some wonderful surprises.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, through NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review. All of the opinions expressed are my own.
The Traitor’s Pawn is a must read novel. If you enjoy action packed, fast paced, nail biting suspense, then this is the book for you. This book opens with a threat against Aubry Grayson’s life and literally continues until the very last chapter. Harris has delivered once again with her signature pulse pounding suspense. A romantic thriller with great characters and lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing. Discussions of faith and tragedy added, make for an interesting book and leaves you waiting for her next novel. Truly Harris is the master of romantic suspense…..I received a copy from Revell and this review is in my own words, loved it.
The action and suspense starts right off in the first chapter in author Harris’s latest thriller. A gun shot and a kidnapping-but who is really the target?
There are a lot secrets in this story that needs to be uncovered. Some of the realizations and truths that the characters uncover are shocking indeed. And everything feels like it is happening in real time.
Throw in a romance that started for one side years ago, that adds to a slow simmer of feelings that are going to have to come out in all of this suspense and danger. I was rooting for Jack and Aubrey from the beginning. They both needed something else besides their jobs to make their lives more whole. After so long of a time, can Jack tell Aubrey what he should have so many years ago?
I always enjoy author Harris’s stories. This was a nice escape from the reality that is. I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
Wow! This book grabbed me from the very first chapter and kept me hooked until the very end. I liked the steady pace of suspense and drama as Jack and Aubrey race to find answers together of her attempted kidnapping. There is also a small element of clean romance and faith throughout this story which was enjoyable.
This story was thrilling, easy to follow, with great engaging characters. I highly recommend reading this book! I read it in one day because I didn’t want to put it down!
I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
This was my first time reading Lisa Harris, and I will definitely be reading her again! For a suspense novel, this wasn’t as suspenseful as many novels I’ve read, so I think it would be the perfect fit for someone who wants to get introduced into the Christian suspense arena without being thrown into the nightmare-worthy reads.
I appreciated the family portrayal in this book—both the very challenging, heartbreaking family situations such as Aubree’s real family as well as the steady family who took Aubree under their wing. Some sensitive readers may find it hard to read the whole situation with her blood father.
The spiritual plot was well done. It hit more toward the end than the beginning, but was still a very real message on forgiveness and trust. The characters were definitely Christian and leaned on God and prayed to Him for direction and help. It felt authentic.
The romance surprised me—delightfully. I felt it was a very warm story. There were several scenes that could have be more sensually described, but they were (such as a time when he gave her a massage, but there was nothing about “warm tingles”—it was just a friend helping a friend). Some readers may think it’s too stiff, but for this not-quite-romantic reader, I thought it was perfect and loved it. I don’t remember any cringe-worthy scenes in the romance field.
Some good quotes that stood out to me:
“But I choose to forgive you, because as imperfect as I see you, I’m just as imperfect.”
“Just because there was heartache in the journey didn’t mean you ignored love in order to avoid pain.”
*I received this book from Revell and happily provided my honest review*
A good suspense read with a believable plot line, interesting story, and terrific characters.
It also had a rather emotional surprise towards the end that I didn’t expect to happen.
I really liked the main character in this story, Aubrey. She wasn’t an emotional type, was incredibly analytical when thinking through the case before her, and she wanted serious relationships only. I could really relate to her and how she looked at the world. Her viewpoint was relatable and the reader could really build empathy for her.
Jack grows on the reader. I didn’t fall in love with him right at the beginning, but he proves himself as the plot moves along. He gives a lot of good, Biblical advice to Aubrey.
The faith theme in this book mostly comes from discussions between the two main characters. I really like spiritual dialogue in my reads. It tends to provoke more thought than other ways a faith theme is introduced. It isn’t an incredibly strong faith theme, but the elements of hope and forgiveness is there. God and his power over all things is brought into the picture as is stories from the Bible. I always like it when an author can put a good faith theme in a fairly fast moving suspense read.
I actually hate to admit it, but I think this is my first read by Lisa Harris. I certainly don’t plan on it being my last. This had a good pace to it, believable storyline, loved the characters, and a faith theme. I enjoyed and recommend this read.
I received this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own. (
This one sadly was a miss for me. Too much action took it to an unbelievable place. There was never enough time for suspense to build due to the sequence of unrealistic dangerous events that occurred. I felt as though the characters were one dimensional and I didn’t really connect with them. A lot of this book was over told and over explained which took me out of them moment and made it hard to really invest in this story. The plot was revealed early on and other than the danger there really weren’t massive plot twists to add elements of surprise to this story. I think readers who like a fast paced, action filled romance might enjoy this book, however it was not my favorite.
*I was given a copy of this book by the Publisher, however I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
High stakes international intrigue that involves two different foreign countries, the FBI, and a city detective kept the pages turning for me well into the night. I was beginning to think that detective Aubrey Grayson must have nine lives like a cat because she had so many brushes with death. FBI agent, Aubrey’s best friend from high school turns up just in time to help rescue her from a kidnapping and the action does not slow down very much from that point on. Needless to say there is plenty of mystery, suspense, danger, and plot twists to keep things interesting and surprise or two just adds extra dimension to the story. Very action oriented, the book also contains an element of faith and the expected romance that does not overpower the suspense.
I loved this book and look forward to the next offering from this author. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.
I know when I pick up a book by Lisa Harris that I will not be able to put it down until I am finished. And this was no exception! It starts with a gunshot and gets more and more suspenseful with boats blowing up, kidnappings, hostages, explosions, helicopters and more. Yet, through it all, Aubrey (Bree) continues to seek God, trying to find answers for “Why life just seems so … unfair sometimes.” Bree and Jack work hard to uncover the espionage ring, and also to figure out their relationship; are they just childhood friends or is there something more? I loved reading this book and highly recommend it! I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I am freely writing a review – all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Lisa Harris did it again with “The Traitor’s Pawn”. Her books keep getting better and better. This is definitely my favorite of hers, so far. Her characters were very relatable, and they stayed with me, even long after I put the book down.
This book centers around FBI Agent Jack Shannon and Detective Aubrey Grayson. Jack comes back to town for a case and he ends up helping out with a case involving Aubrey Grayson, who was a childhood friend of Jack’s. There is suspense and a little romance in this book. There were a few twists along the way.
I definitely recommend this book and all books by Lisa Harris. I read a good bit of inspirational romantic suspense authors, and Lisa Harris is one of my favorites!
I received this book from the author through NetGalley for my honest opinion.
Thank you in advance to the publisher, Revell, for providing a complimentary review copy courtesy of Interviews and Reviews. A positive review was not required. All words are my own.
This is the first book I’ve read by the author. And, I truly wasn’t disappointed. I’m definitely interested in more of her novels and will keep her on the “must-read” list.
As a fan of suspense, romance, and Christian fiction – this book covers everything I could ask for. The fact that the story takes place in my home state of Texas is a bonus.
Just the first sentence as the book begins is ominous – “watch your back … this isn’t over.” The cover looks equally exciting – a woman on the cover, the Corpus Christi landscape in what I thought would be an exciting read.
I wasn’t wrong. And, I’m very glad I got the chance to read this novel.
This non-stop, fast-paced, yet very clean read has a lot of action. By chapter five, there had been shootings, a kidnapping, and grenade launcher. And, even throughout the book, the action didn’t stop. This was a thriller and suspense full of intrigue, treason, as well as murder. It was definitely an edge-of-seat, exciting, heart-pounding read.
The characters of Jack and Aubrey were thoroughly fleshed out and very realistic given the situation. Each one had their own doubts about the relationship – or what could’ve been. And, I loved how protective Jack was of Bree, yet he didn’t smother or suffocate her – he treated her as an equal. I would’ve liked to have seen more of Papps though and would’ve enjoyed his take on Jack and Bree’s relationship.
By chapters eight and nine, it was easy to see how the title played into it.
Harris definitely kept my interest with this one. I had no idea what to expect, or even what was going on. By the end, I was still trying to piece it all together.
There were twists I didn’t see coming and some of the characters I had some doubts about, and despite my guesses, I was wrong on all counts.
This is one of those suspense novels that hooked me right away and kept me engaged throughout.
With regard to the faith element, there are some noticeable traces of faith in it – references to God and Jesus, with the characters looking to them for guidance. There are no sermons, no biblical quotes, and it doesn’t come off as preachy. The faith elements are minor.
This is also a clean read by definition of – no sex scenes and no foul or questionable language.
THE TRAITORS PAWN….Lisa..Harris
A non stop action story with a good flowing plot. They have always been close, getting training and going into law enforcement. Bree taking a much needed break to go hunting with the senator and his sons. While watching the sunrise, a sniper shot the senator and kidnapped Bree. His plans were foiled by Bree. The guy was a spy and part of the Albatross File, he won’t talk and tell them who the head people are. Both the senator even retired has been getting threats. Case of Bree just ended of sending a man to prison with his treats, of sending men to get her. Great story, great characters to round out a story that will be enjoyed by readers. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion by Net Galley and Revell.
