Nooooooooooo! Don’t make me wait months for Book 2!
I love historical romances, but haven’t read many set in the American Revolutionary War period. I used to love visiting historical sites as a kid, so I wanted to give this book a shot. Our hero John wasn’t a hero in the beginning in any way, shape or form. He was quite pitiful, actually. But then he is given a second chance in life, and thus begins his redemption.
Dellis was an awesome heroine! She and her schizophrenic brother were the children of a Scots father and an Oneida Indian mother. Both were lost in tragic ways, leaving Dellis to run an inn to support herself and her brother. Though Dellis had been through hell and back, she was no wilting violet. She was a healer and a proud woman of her tribe. John and his men, on a mission, take accommodations in Dellis’s inn. Then the story really takes off.
This story isn’t perfect. There were times I had trouble keeping track of who was who, which tribes supported the Crown or the Colonials, and things such as that. However, there was intrigue, danger, excitement, suspense and yes, romance and chemistry. In other words, all the things that grab me and hold onto me in a book. Though I hated to end this book on a cliffhanger, it by no means ruined my enjoyment of it. In fact, I am impatiently awaiting the next installment!
I received a copy of this book courtesy of NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.
If you like the Revolutionary War, you will enjoy this book! I read the book and listened to the audiobook…and completely fell in love with John Carlisle and the other characters (I can definitely say there is a character that I don’t like very much but he is the villain). TJ London brings the world of the 1770’s to life in a way that everyone can enjoy!
I had a really good time with this audiobook! I have to admit that this audiobook grabbed my attention once I saw the list of narrators. Once I read the description, I knew that I wanted to give it a try. My attention span has been rather limited in recent months so I was a bit worried that I would have some trouble staying focused on a 15-hour audiobook but this book had no problems holding my interest. I am really glad that I decided to give this book a try.
I don’t think that I have read all that many books set during this time period and I did enjoy seeing Captain John Carlisle navigate his way in America. I liked John but I found Dellis to be the highlight of this story. Dellis was such a capable woman who has been dealt a bad hand but has not given up. I did like the connection that she felt with John. I wasn’t quite as sure about John at the start of the story but he really grew on during the course of the story.
I was hooked by the story. A lot is going on in this book and I really found all of the aspects of the story to be important to the bigger picture. I found the book to be rather exciting and I found myself wondering how things would work out for each of the characters. I thought that the romantic element of the story was well done and felt very authentic. My only real complaint is that I had hoped to see things wrapped up a bit more. I really didn’t feel like there was any real resolution at the close of this book.
The narration was very well done. This is a fabulous cast of narrators and I think that they all did a phenomenal job with this story. Shane East and Tara Langella did the bulk of the narration but it was always fun to hear one of the other two voices. I thought that their reading added a lot of excitement to the story and was able to bring this book to life. I do feel that the narration added to my overall enjoyment of this story.
I would recommend this book to others. This was an exciting story filled with wonderful characters that were easy to care about. I cannot wait to see what happens next to Dellis and John.
I received a digital audiobook review copy of this book from Caffeinated PR.
*****AUDIOBOOK REVIEW*****
5 Gripping Stars!!!
When I first started reading several years ago, a big part of my reading was historical fiction and I loved every page of them. Of course, a lot of the stories were liberally embellished because, it’s still a romance book. But with The Tory, we’re truly getting a history lesson. It’s the Winter of 1776 and Captain John Carlisle as narrated by the amazing Shane East is in a quandary. He’s on a mission to clear his name, but so many other lives hang in the balance with how he proceeds. Least of which is Dellis as narrated by Tara Langella. This woman is strong and has a past that is unimaginable.
I was completely captivated by this story not only because of the excellent narration but with the way Ms. London wove this story. I found myself sad when I had to stop listening for work because I was so in the moment with her vivid descriptions in each and every scene. There’s an attention to detail that is a must in a story like this and I truly felt I had a bird’s eye view to what was happening to each character. This is a true saga in the best way possible. It’s not only about the Colonial-Revolutionary War but also a slow burning love story that is somewhat dictated by societal standards. Having said this, Dellis is a woman that goes against the norms with how she lives her life a lot of which she has lost and she’s determined to not lose more!
There’s so much I could say about this rich historical novel but it is truly one you need to experience for yourself. It’s enthralling from the very first words spoken to the last. Even if you don’t necessarily like history, this book will make you change your mind it’s just that good. It doesn’t feel like a “history lesson.” It’s a story that ebbs and flows as happens in the war and as John Carlisle gets to restore his name and commission we get a richly told story that is history and love story in one phenomenal book!!
This was my first TJ London’s book, and definitely won’t be my last. This is the first book in The Rebels and Redcoats Saga, an outstanding Historical Romance. Wow! I loved it! The characters are great and well developed. John and Dellis’s slow burn romance is enthralling. John is a wonderful character, intriguing, secretive, and fascinating. Dellis is a fantastic character, surprisingly strong, and determined. Their journey is full of adventure, and action. There is a lot going on in this story. The storyline is well written, descriptive, intricate, emotional, suspenseful, filled with danger, betrayal, secrets, intrigue, and twists and turns. The scenery is well described, and easy to imagine. Some graphic scenes are rough to listen to. The cast of supporting characters is impressive. The audio quality is impeccable. Shane East, Tara Langella, Patrick Zeller, and Marnye Young did an extraordinarily great job with the narration. This audiobook exceeded my expectations. I enjoyed it, and I HIGHLY recommend it. I can’t wait to listen to the next book in the serie, The Traitor, to know what happens next!
The Tory
The Rebels and Redcoats Saga#1
By T.J. London
Narrated by Shane East, Patrick Zeller, Tara Langella and Marnye Young
A story to captivate your mind, The Tory is phenomenal.TJ London takes us on a journey, in the winter of 1776. Captain John Carlisle is undercover to clear his name. Posing as a war profiteer, he meets Dellis an Oneida Innkeeper. These two have the most interesting relationship, both intellectual and slow burn romantic. She introduces John to people to sell his goods and lets him gain trust and support of those around him. With unfortunate circumstances, dangerous characters, and intriguing partners, John takes us on an adventure. London’s descriptive writing lets us visualize each scene as it unfolds and experience the story as if we were there. It’s an amazing story, and I can’t wait to find out where John takes us next.
Narrated by 4 voice actors, the story is brought to life. Shane East, Patrick Zeller, Marnye Young and Tara Langella are fantastic storytellers and together brought out the essence of this story. Each character its own voice, inflections and nuances drawing out the frustrations, fear and emotions. This is an amazing cast of narrators and they brought me hours of entertainment.

I was so excited for the audiobook because a friend told me about it. I ended up downloading the ebook sample because I couldn’t wait, which then lead me to purchase the full book because I just could not put it down. I completely devoured it because I was so taken in by the writing, the way the story was told and all of the amazing characters. There are scenes that will make you cry, get angry, feel scared and even a few that will make your heart melt. It’s definitely what I would call an epic level story.
I was given the opportunity to listen to an advance copy of the audiobook. Let me tell you this, I was absolutely blown away by the audio performance. Coming into this audio, I had heard prior performances by only one of the 4 narrators. I knew the caliber to expect from one of them, but the others were new to me. Every single one of them was outstanding! They all were able to bring T.J.’s characters to life. Trust me, you’re gonna want to buy this audiobook.
Set in today’s New England and Ontario in the 1776 Revolutionary war John Carlisle tells his story about how he becomes a military goal to an undercover map maker, as a supply merchant, for the intelligence of the Red Coats all while having nightmares of the past that put him in front of the court marshall.
Dellis is the innkeeper of The Thistle, her father’s home that once was grand and inviting and the only thing she has left of her parents after the brutal attack a few years ago.
Dellis takes John around to the villages of her people to assist with getting them supplies for the winter that is swiftly coming, gaining trust and support is the final goal. The supplies have arrived and then are stolen, twice, making it harder on the villages to stay during the looming winter months. John goes on a mission to find out who and where the supplies have gone, as getting the villages to trust him are one of his top missions from the General.
The drama and adventure continue when John’s business partner, Celest, turns up in the new town wanting to start up a new brothel all while his old Commander is trying to exact revenge for his treachery and betrayal a few years back.
I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a forbidden love story that takes you back in time and has some horrifically terrifying things happening among the English and Indian people. Very well written and the research was executed amazingly from the forts, villages, and the lady’s dressing gowns.
Just wow. Where to start, this is my first experience with T.J. London’s work and I can say without any hesitation, I will one-click every single work from this author from here on out. The Tory was extremely well written and accurate for the period. The attitudes weren’t in line with much of the watered down, politically correct pieces I have been reading and I found it to be incredibly refreshing. The story was fast paced without extra fluff, very descriptive, and intricately built. There’s really no one way to describe it because it’s action packed, suspenseful, dramatic, filled with sexual tension and romance, and themes still so relevant for current times. The author’s voice is easy to read, making it entirely possible to completely lose yourself in it. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series. This book (and likely series) will be one I re-read regularly. Highly recommend to anyone who loves a deep story.
