As the only daughter, Sylvia Miller of The Tinderbox has always held a special place in her Old Order family, one Adeline Pelham jeopardizes when she shows up at the Millers’ Hickory Hollow farm. It isn’t that Adeline means to be a threat, but her very existence is a reminder of the painful secret that has so recently upended the Miller household. And with Sylvia and her mother still struggling … still struggling to come to terms with that news, this is a challenging time to welcome an Englisher–especially this Englisher–into their midst.
Despite the Millers’ unexpected hospitality, Adeline is well aware that she’s treading on Sylvia’s turf, and she feels guilty about doing so when Sylvia is grappling with issues of her own. Not only is Sylvia trying to rebuild her trust in her father, but she’s uncertain what to make of her once-promising engagement to Titus Kauffman, who hasn’t pursued her since she confronted him. Adeline wishes she could help Sylvia, but she’s not sure that either she or Sylvia is ready for that level of closeness in their relationship.
Can God make something good come out of the mistakes of the past? Or does Adeline’s
arrival mark one too many surprises for the Millers and their Amish community?

I found ths book on a shelf in my library and I just had to take it out to fnd out what happens to the characters that were introduced in the previous book, “The Tinderbox”. And you finally see how the mystery turns out – this book answers any questions you might have had in the previous book.
A beautiful story of family, faith, forgiveness, and acceptance. Fans of Amish fiction will enjoy every page!
Earnest Millers family has been through a hardship. Sylvia is truly a amazing young woman. When Titus starts acting different about her family she knows she has to do something. When Adeline shows up at the vegetable stand the Miller families life’s will change again. Beverly Lewis is a amazing Christian author. Her books are all truly inspirational. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.
Another wonderful story from Beverly Lewis. I enjoyed reading The Timepiece and I highly recommend this book!
Once again Beverly Lewis has made a home run with her latest release, The Timepiece. We are taken back to Hickory Hollow to continue the story of Silvia and Adeline (and Ernest and the rest of the family!).
The sisters continue to draw closer as we see a story of forgiveness and God calling us to Himself. We also get another glimpse of the beloved Wise Woman, Ella Mae Zook.
I am already anticipating the next book by Beverly Lewis
New York Times Best Selling Author Beverly Lewis pens an excellent sequel to The Tinderbox. Just coming off a six week ban for hiding the fact, from the Amish Church , that he was a divorced man, Earnest Miller is shocked to learn he has a daughter from his first marriage.
In The Timepiece Lewis wasted no time picking up from where she left off in The Tinder Box. We find Rhoda and Earnest inviting Adeline into their home and introducing her to their family. Trying to make her feel welcome they ask her to spend the evening with them. But an evening turns into two weeks as they get to know each other. Soon Earnest introduces Adeline to Preacher Kauffman and his wife. Sylvia , the Miller’s Amish daughter is engaged to their son Titus. Soon Titus is wanting to know what else Earnest is hiding from the Amish people. This adds tension to their already stressful relationship. Titus asks Sylvia not to spend time with her half sister, fearing that Adeline will lead her away from the Amish faith.
Will the Amish church believe that Earnest didn’t know he had an English daughter by his first marriage, when he confessed to the church about his past? Will Titus and Sylvia’ s fragile engagement survive this family’s latest upheaval? Is Titus more concerned about Slyvia or about how things look to the Amish community?
I thoroughly enjoyed this warm hearted easy to read story. It’s about forgiveness and about time. The past , present and future of Earnest Miller and his family. I was especially touched with how the Miller family excepted Adeline into their home and did their best to make her feel welcome. Earnest and Rhoda spent hours with her answering questions about the Amish faith and their plain life.
If you read Amish Fiction you will love The Timepiece. All fans of Beverly Lewis should read this book. I would recommend that you read The Tinderbox first in order to better follow along in this book.
I borrowed a hardcover edition of this book from the local library. I was not asked to do a review. All opinions expressed here are my own.
Wonderful book!
One of my favorite authors.
I liked the first book ,in this 2 book series and felt this one was just as beleivible entertaining and addictive as the first, I hated every time I had to put my kindle down to do something else ;good read
I usually anticipate the release of Beverly Lewis’ books and after I read the last page of The Tinderbox, I eagerly waited for the arrival of The Timepiece. The Miller’s are once again under scrutiny. Sylvia, who thought she was her father’s only daughter, didn’t relish getting to know Adeline, the daughter he didn’t know he had. She was also unsure if she would marry Titus, the cautious son of Amos Kaufman, the strictest preacher of her church district. This is one of those stories that gives us a glimpse into human nature to see that all we need to see isn’t on the surface.
The Miller family, except Sylvie, warmly welcome Adeline into their family. There have been so many changes and she wasn’t prepared for the addition of a sister, especially from the Englisch world. The dynamics of the newcomer in addition to learning more about her father’s life before joining the Amish seem to impact her the most. As her time to become baptized draws near, she must decide her future. Adeline, for her part, is becoming more intrigued with this quiet life as she too, prepares to return to her college studies and her fiancee Brandon. She too, has questions as she learns more about her father, Earnest and the surprises she finds in her late mother’s journal.
Amidst all this, is Rhoda, Earnest’s wife and Sylvia’s mother. She is a quiet force to reckon with as she guides them along with love and wisdom. This story is about a resilient family whose faith strengthens them to bring about forgiveness, and the discovery of joy. Beverly Lewis wove together a wonderful story that proves that faith, patience and time can bring forth many blessings. I recommend this book to all fans of Beverly Lewis, but also to new fans to pick up and enjoy.
Great read!
I am a big fan of Beverly Lewis. Her books always entertain and make me feel good about the characters. This one is no exception. There are always some surprises too.
