Audrey Niffenegger’s innovative debut, The Time Traveler’s Wife, is the story of Clare, a beautiful art student, and Henry, an adventuresome librarian, who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: … Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity in his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.
The Time Traveler’s Wife depicts the effects of time travel on Henry and Clare’s marriage and their passionate love for each other as the story unfolds from both points of view. Clare and Henry attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals–steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

One of the best, most original time-travel books I’ve ever read. The characters are three dimensional and, given what they deal with in the course of the book, very courageous. The ending is bittersweet, but still satisfying.
too much fantasy for me
A wonderful ride through time and Space. Great love story.
Sad book.
I loved this original time travel romance.
I liked this book a lot. It was very original and while a bit sad in parts, a great story.
C L A S S I C. You will read this one more than once.
Very readable, original but I really hate sad feeling endings.
A lot of back and forth. I lost patience with the book.
I read this years ago and still have a warm spot for it. I read it on a plane and gave it to my teenage daughter to read. Such an original premise. Have some tissues ready for the ending. This would also make a good book for book club
Well, I finished it. Which is more than my mother can say — she gave up mid-way through.
Where did all the 4 and 5 star reviews come from? What were readers thinking?
Disjointed, confusing, not believable. I had to keep going back and refer to the dates at the beginning of each section to remind myself where/when we were. I think that if there were such a thing as time travel, it would be more like in the Outlander series. If you are in one century/decade, you cannot be another simultaneously. Ergo, you can not see or interact with yourself when you travel.
And I wanted to smack Clare, tell her to get a life and STOP WAITING! (Poor Gomez)
Intriguing and a good read
Wonderful book, and amazingly written. It took me several days to recover after reading it. Have a box of Kleenex handy.
Did not like the characters. The story developed very slowly. I finally abandoned the book.
for some strange reason, I really enjoyed this read, I wasn’t sure I would, but the characters kept me turning the pages.
This was a book that kept me up late and counting the minutes until I could leave work to get home and back to reading!
I don’t normally like time travel stories, but this one was fun and interesting to read. Highly recommend it.
The book was ok but didn’t merit the hype.
so beautiful!
If you have read science fiction before, forget this book. None of it makes any sense. Don’t know why it is so acclaimed, but its really kind of dull. Read Jodi Picoult instead.
