Audrey Niffenegger’s innovative debut, The Time Traveler’s Wife, is the story of Clare, a beautiful art student, and Henry, an adventuresome librarian, who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: … Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity in his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.
The Time Traveler’s Wife depicts the effects of time travel on Henry and Clare’s marriage and their passionate love for each other as the story unfolds from both points of view. Clare and Henry attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals–steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

This is one of my all-time favorite books and is a sweeping love story that will stay with readers long after they’ve finished reading. Henry and Clare’s relationship is an epic romance filled with realistic flaws and powerful emotion. Readers will relate to the very real issues they face as a couple and the novel’s strength is juxtaposing the ordinary with the extraordinary by adding an element of the fantastical to the mix through Henry’s time travel. While Henry’s condition is certainly fiction, the struggles they face with his constant departures is so authentic to any couple that has been separated for long and unpredictable periods of time, and Niffenegger handles these emotions perfectly.
The concept of this novel is fun and intriguing; the execution is quite simply magic. Niffenegger writes gorgeous sentences, capturing the heart of love with stunning prose. Her character building is spot on and she does an excellent job of creating a world where it is believable that Henry is able to do such extraordinary things.
This is a love story for the ages, a tearjerker, and a novel that should not be missed.
No matter how often you return, the layers of this amazing novel shift into new patterns.
Wasn’t sure if I would like this book but found it utterly and surprisingly good! Very different. I highly recommend this one!
Still my favorite book ever.
An original time-travelling love story, much better than the movie, by the way. A bit slow in spots, but also suspenseful. I’m not an avid reader of romantic novels, but this was a beautiful, heart-affecting tale.
Loved it, I’ve been meaning to read it again.
great read could not put book down
Loved this book. I am a sucker for time traveling romance that references the Violent Femmes
This is 1 of my most favorite books of all time. The kind I could sit down & read more than once. I usually steer clear of romance, just something I didn’t care for until a winner like this 1 comes along and makes me change my mind.
Happy Reading,
Hope You Enjoy.
If you are writing a book that has multiple pov done in the first person, and to make things more complicated, each pov’s younger/ older version exists in the same scene, on the same page talking to each other, and if you are horribly messing things up and no one is understanding a fuck what is happening in your book, then I prescribe you to read this book. This book does it right, considering I understood everything even though I was reading at lightning speed during four of my breakfasts.
Even though it is one of the saddest books that I have ever read, this book was a real page-turner right from the beginning! A classic the-one-who-got-away, but in a twisted way, the thing I enjoy the most about this book is that it isn’t the typical Happily Ever After that most romance novels are, but it is still a true romance novel that everyone who reads it will fall in love with. Not a casual read, you will need to set aside time to read it, but definitely worth the time!
One of my all time favorite books. Loved all the characters. Very well written and original.
This is a love story. Clare falls in love with Henry, a man with Chrono-Displacement Disorder. A disorder where Henry’s body involuntarily and uniquely skips through time-periods. No worries this disorder is not real, I had to look it up. This story is tragic and beautiful, it’s one of those books that you know is just gonna make you cry. Have your tissues by your side and ready. I love the characters, especially Clare. You can’t help but feel so sorry for her. I don’t think I would have been able to stick it out with Henry. I love this book.
Since I’ve been wanting to read this book for so long, I love the cover of this book which is beautiful.
This book is the author’s first novel where Clare, a pretty art student, and Henry, an adventurous librarian, are together. They have known each other since Clare was six and Henry 36 and got married when Clare was 23 and Henry 31. It may seem impossible, but it’s the truth. Henry has been diagnosed with chronic displacement. Every day his genetic clock resets and he travels through time.
This book tells the story of Henry and Clare’s time travel and their passionate love for each other. The author tells us their story from their point of view.
A book read in one afternoon so much I hooked on the story so engaging, addictive, captivating, full of suspense and twists and turns with very endearing characters. Can’t wait to read : “Her Fearful symmetry”.
Time travel can be a little confusing. Don’t think too much about it, just let it be and it’s great!
beautiful
The time travel, the romance, Unique story.
Oh, I read this an age ago and I should probably re-read before reviewing it, but it was SO good. It was intense and involved and heart-wrenching. I get teary even remembering it. I’d highly recommend this book!
Just OK. Wouldn’t recommend, but then I’m not a fan of most books of fantasy.
A fantastic book! Very entertaining and original. Well written!
