I usually don’t read time travel books because of all the conflicts that surround changing the past, cause it changes the future and whose to say HOW those changes affect anything…
I gave this book a try because I have enjoyed every book that I’ve read by Anna Applegate. Her books usually feature strong heroes and heroines, great plots, and unlikeable villains. I am also usually drawn into her stories and put them down reluctantly.
The Time Traveler’s Magic was not a disappointment. All the elements that I’ve encountered in Applegate’s other writings are in full force in this book. While there were paranormal elements, I think the time travel gave the story a fantastical feel. I enjoyed getting to know Ember and Rane. At times, I felt frustrated by Ember’s refusal to heed instruction. Character flaw? There should be lessons that are learned from that. There were some things that I felt could have grounded the story a little more, but overall I liked how the author pulled all the strange things that were happening to Ember together to create a unique story worthy of recommendations. I can’t wait to read the next book! 4.5 stars
I received a copy from Booksprout in exchange for my honest opinion.
I couldn’t stand Ember. I tried. I thought that after the mind block was removed, I might like her better. But it was like nothing changed in her. When she first time travels, she refuses to accept pretty much everything, from pirates, to being in the past, to vampires… She stubbornly railed against it for several chapters even when things were staring her in the face. Rane kept saying that he loved how “brave” she was. He repeatedly said that. Thing is, stupidity and ignorant stubbornness don’t equal bravery. She can’t sword fight. In one scene they give her a couple of pointers. So, very next scene when they encounter enemy pirates, Rane tells her to hide. And does she listen? No, she charges out in mid-battle, because she thinks she can do whatever the guys can do even though they’ve been fencing and fighting for decades, not to mention that the idea that she could get hurt doesn’t even cross her mind, like she couldn’t handle the very idea of it (when she eventually does get hurt, it’s like this major shock and surprise to her -the only thing that surprised me was that it didn’t happen half a book earlier). That’s not bravery. (Bravery is knowing you’re going to get hurt or killed, plucking up your courage and doing it anyway because you know it’s the right thing to do.) She actually escapes her hiding place and charges into battle a number of times (you’d think Rane would learn to tie her up during a battle or lock her in -I think he did lock her in during one scene and she broke the lock and came charging out, again). I actually did like Rane and Destin, though Destin seemed to pop out of nowhere and never seemed to really fit in with the rest of the crew. In fact, the rest of the crew were never really described. For that matter, the book had very little description outside of the pirate ship, and the hospital. I never really got a feeling of where things were supposed to be set. I didn’t even know it was Charleston until someone mentioned it toward the end of the book. You definitely don’t get a feeling of the time period being different from the modern world. No one makes any comment on Ember being dressed anachronistically, which she obviously would be if she’s wearing modern clothes in the 1700s. MacGreggor… just calling him a shifter, doesn’t make him a shifter. Never at any point did he turn into something other than human, though the book called him a shifter repeatedly, not to mention that there was no depth to his character other than being a growling villain. There were the constant battles where neither pirate seemed to lose or gain any ground, at least not while Ember was around, though whenever she was removed from the battle, it just seemed like it was assumed the battle stopped. Why? You’d think Rane would have been worrying about his crew each time he left to remove Ember. For a time travel book, everything was done very linearly. Each time she visited Rane, she did it in order after the previous time she visited him, which felt like it lacked imagination. On a parting note, I do love the cover and I loved the idea of vampire pirates in the past.
This was my first time reading Anna applegate and it was quite the page turner. The was a lot of mystery around the heroine and her family that left you guessing all the way through. Often times I guessed wrong which I usually dont, so extra props! The heroine is a time traveler as the title suggests but is slowly uncovering secrets about herself and her family in the effort to save her mother. Again I loved the concept but occasionally I would get frustrated w/ wanting more description of matters like surely she can’t just walk around in her clothes from the modern era, and how was it that Finn went back with her that first time? Some of these questions may likely get answered in the next book, which I can’t wait to read. The hero of the story was quite amazing, very selfless and just slightly protective to be charming.

The Time Traveler’s Magic is an amazing follow up to Anna Applegate’s first foray into the Magic Bound Saga after the prequel novella The Time Traveller’s Awakening in the Souls and Shadows collection. I was hooked on Ember and Rane in the novella and was eager to continue to read about them. This book did not disappoint. Ember rejoins Rane without her memories, much to Rane’s displeasure, but they overcome their obstacles, fight their enemies across centuries and grow closer. Ember is a strong female lead as she learns her powers, discovers a shocking secret about her past and regains her memories. Rane is everything I look for in a male lead. Plus, he is a vampire pirate, two of the coolest things ever. He is charming, funny, witty and his feeling for Ember are present in everything that he does. Their interactions are full of tension and heat, their bond intensifying and it leaves you wanting more. I love Rane’s sense of humor and he is one of my favorite book heroes that I’ve read in a long time. I am happy the series will continue, although the cliffhanger at the end left me wanting to read the next one immediately. I hope the next one comes quickly!
I love this book. I’ve never read one like this. Piratez, vampires and time travel are a good mix. Ember and Rane have become 2 of my favorite people. Can’t wait for #2.
“It was happening again. That feeling . Like someone was watching her.” – Ember
Ember Brighton is struggling; struggling to survive the wreckage that has become her life. Her parents were involved in a horrific car accident six months ago, her father is gone, and now Ember has received a call that her mother had slipped into a coma. Rushing to the care center, Ember wonders if it’s all just a mistake… Please God, let it be a mistake! She couldn’t lose her mother!
Ember’s unease continues to grow after a stranger accosts her outside of the care center. Rescue comes from an unlikely source, as her savior is none other than Dr. Miles Finn, her mother’s physician! But other forces are in play, as she watches her assailant simply… vanish. Vanished as if he were never there… Or as if he never existed.
Desperate to find a way to meet the demands of mounting medical bills, Ember struggles to work more hours, and attempts to ask for a raise. Shut down before she can even ask, a despondent Ember returns to her work station, when a sudden thought galvanizes her into action. She’ll do inventory! The rest of the staff dislike the store room, but Ember is willing to brave its cold and shadowy depths if it allows her to earn a little more.
“All things that need to come to pass, shall.” – Florence Spector, Ember’s grandmother
Once again, Ember is accosted, this time at her place of employment. Fleeing her assailants, Ember managed to lock herself in the storage room, where she noticed a strange light shining brightly from under a table. As the door is forced open, Ember backs up, against the table…
Rane Andersson is the captain of his ship, on a mission to seize and sink Spanish ships. He allows no insubordination within his crew or any passengers that might be aboard. With Ember’s arrival, he reminds her that she “borrowed” his gem and would like it back. Ember hasn’t a clue what he is referring to. He’s a total stranger…Isn’t he? But somehow, he seems familiar… Those captivating grey eyes, those broad shoulders, that strong muscular torso… Surely Ember would have remembered him if they had previously met?
But Ember’s nightmare is far from over, as she discovers one of the dark secrets that Rane is hiding… Supernatural beings DO exist, and Ember? Ember is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime…
Vampires and shifters and time travel… Oh my! This book has it all! A sassy, spunky heroine that doesn’t give up, a handsome vampire pirate captain whose smoldering looks set Ember ablaze, and a megalomaniac villain… What more could you ask for?
This is book has it all!!! Time traveling, pirates and mystery. What more could you ask for? The book starts out strong and just keeps getting better and better the longer it goes on. I could not put it down. I need more. The characters are engaging, the storyline orginal and the mystery of it all just draws you in and won’t let you go.
