The annoying heroine improves.
Audiobook version: 3 stars overall, 3 stars story, 3 stars narration
This short (3.75-hour) time travel/paranormal romance started out rough but has potential. The first half of the story was trite and predictable, with stale dialogue and a lack of geographic detail. In the first scene, the author ridiculously expects the readers to believe that a huge swordfight happened outside of a townhouse in a modern city, and none of the neighbors noticed! The heroine’s mother also seemed very flat as a character. The heroine Ember was annoying for 1.5 hours and then greatly improved and gained a really interesting love interest. You would expect a 28-year-old medical student to be calm in a stressful situation, but Ember was often hyperventilating in the first half. I’m glad that she stopped that annoying behavior. I plan to listen to the next 2 books in this series since the second half was unpredictable and very enjoyable.
I didn’t like a few aspects of Sarah Puckett’s narration. She narrated every chapter except the final one. Overall, her performance is rather lackluster. Her character voices are not always distinct from each other. She even has some weird mispronunciations, such as pronouncing the “i” and “e” in “hurriedly” as separate vowel sounds. She also does not pronounce the “b” in “nimbly”. I played the audiobook on 1.2x speed so that the narrator’s semi-Valley-Girl accent was not noticeable. Aaron Shedlock did a 5-star job with his single chapter.
I requested and received a free audiobook copy via #AudiobookObsession and the Flock VIP Review Team, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
This prequel really gives you a taste for more. I haven’t read the series first this time, but now I HAVE to. Between the time traveling medical student, Vikings and paranormals this action packed morsel HAS to lead to something good!
I am completely intrigued by this prequel!!
The Time Traveler’s Awakening is amazing! Great storyline and I loved the characters. I was drawn in immediately and I cant wait for more in this series. The audio narration does an excellent job bringing the story to life.
Really enjoyed this prequel to the Magic Bound series and The Time Traveler’s Magic. It was great to get the background of Ember and Rane’s relationship – how they met, how Ember moves through time and how she and Rane’s connection was forged.
This does not need to be read/listened to first if you get them out of order. You’ll still be able to follow and enjoy the story in The Time Traveler’s Magic, and this will give you some great insights even no matter what order.
Aaron Shedlock and Sarah Puckett do a great job narrating. This charming, wry, witty character is one that Aaron Shedlock always excels at, which is why he’s one of my favorite narrators. Sarah Puckett’s her narration is enjoyable, and she bring sass and determination to Ember’s character. Looking forward to more in this series.
This is the prequel to the Magic Bound Saga, a Time-Travel Paranormal Romance. I listened to The Time Traveler’s Magic before (book 1), and I loved to have Ember and Rane’s backstory. This is a great introduction to the series. This prequel is told from Ember’s POV, so Aaron Shedlock only narrated the Epilogue. Sarah Puckett did a great job with the narration. Now, I am looking forward to listen to The Time Traveler’s Vampire, the third book in the Series. #TheFlock #AudiobookObsession #PinkFlamingoProductions
The Time Traveler’s Awakening is a prequel in the Magic Bound Series and follows Ember Brighton as she discovers the magical secrets in her family’s line. After attacks on her and her parents by a brutish Viking, Ember must use her time traveling gift for the first time to retrieve a magical gem and save them all.
Let me start by saying that I have a strong dislike for any time traveling story or movie. The concept doesn’t appeal to me in any way. But this book didn’t have any of the plot holes I find in stories with time travel in their plots. Then again, it is a prequel and just the start of this interesting tale. I am curious to see how she handles it as the story progresses. Which means I’ll definitely be reading on!
The characters were all distinct in their own ways. Pirate vampires? Time traveling Vikings? Talk about unique! I thoroughly enjoyed the originality of the story. And how realistic it felt (despite the Supernatural aspects).
There were times the description read a bit heavy and that slowed the progression down, but for a slow start it really ramped up at the end. I can’t wait to see where this series is going! Really, really enjoyed it. 4.5 stars
**I listened to the audiobook for this and the narrators did an excellent job with the voices and narration.
Time Traveler’s Awakening is the prequel to the Magic Bound Saga and is a time travel paranormal romance. I’ve never read or listened to this author before, and I can’t wait for the next book in this series! I really enjoyed the story line and even though this is a shorter listen, there are plot twists you won’t see coming!
Ember is a college student and still living at home. She comes home one day to have her whole world turned upside down. There are things she never knew about about her family, things that are now putting their lives at risk. She is determined to help and ends up meeting Rane. They have instant chemistry, but will she ever see him again? Dang, this girl has some tough decisions to make.
The cliffhanger at the end has left me wanting SO MUCH MORE!! I need the next book stat!!
Sarah and Aaron did a fabulous job narrating this story! They truly brought these characters to life!

Fantastic Story & Narration Fascinating Series Start!
The Time Traveler’s Awakening (Prequel to the Magic Bound Saga)
A Time-Travel Paranormal Romance
By: Anna Applegate
Narrated by: Sarah Puckett, Aaron Shedlock
This is a fascinating start to what is going to be an amazing series. It is my first book written by Anna Applegate, I enjoyed her writing style and her creative and imaginative mind. The storylines are interesting and original, they easily grabbed my attention and held it captive straight to the end. The fascinating characters are well developed, likable, easy to relate to and connect with. Ember Brighton a hard working college student with goals of becoming a doctor. But she soon learns there is more to the world than what meets the eye, she also learns there is more to her own family, herself included. This book sets the foundation for future books in the series, the author does a great job blending fantasy, paranormal, time travel and romance into her story. The book runs under four hours but it packs a lot of details and story, there is plenty of drama, a touch of angst, action, a touch of thrilling suspense, some heartfelt moments and the start of what is going to be an epic romance. Thank you Anna Applegate for this fantastic story, I am looking forward to hearing more from Rane, hopefully Finn, Jac & Patrick too. I hope it comes to Audible soon.
I listened to the Audible edition, Sarah Puckett and Aaron Shedlock are fabulous narrators. They were perfectly casted to bring the characters to life. Sarah did an awesome job covering the roles for all the characters up to the epilogue when Aaron Shedlock steps in and takes the reign as Rane. Their performances are perfection, these two are entertaining storytellers and it is always a pleasure to listen to their work. Thank you for another awesome listen.
Thank you @AudiobookObsession #AudiobookObsession #AudiobookObsessionReviewer

The Time Traveler’s Awakening (Prequel to the Magic Bound Saga)
A Time-Travel Paranormal Romance
By: Anna Applegate
Narrated by: Sarah Puckett, Aaron Shedlock
Fast paced and exciting, Anna Applegate’s The Time Traveler’s Awakening is just enough to whet your appetite for more! I was in, hook, line and sinker! Ember’s family has been keeping a secret from her, trying to keep her safe, so when she first leaps into time travel, it’s shocking. Now with her first experience down, she has met Rane, and he is not what he appears. Will Ember be taken in by him? Can she trust him? And what about their attraction? This is so quick, and so well written, I couldn’t believe it was over. Time travel with a paranormal character spin leaves us wanting! I can’t wait to hear more!
This casting is spot on! I love Sarah Puckett’s performance. She has so many cool voices and she nails them all. There were lots of characters, and even so raspy men and some with accents that she just easily conjures up and makes the characters her own. She is very talented and keeps me on track with who is speaking, giving me the most entertainment for my listen. Aaron Shedlock provides the epilogue, and sets us up for the next book. If his voice for this is any indication of how it’s going to be, I am sold, and cannot wait for this incredible character! I am very excited!

A very interesting time-travel prequel.
I love stories about time travel and this one is such a unique surprise. Ember and Rane were great characters and even with so few chapters, this was a decently developed book. It is a prequel so it was great that it was so together thumbs up to the author. The banter between Finn and Rane in the epilogue was a great set up for the next book. There is also another thumbs up for the cover. I hope you check it out. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
