In The Time of Terror, friends turn against friends, patriots are betrayed, and lovers must pay the ultimate price.
1793: British navy commander Nathan Peake patrols the English coast, looking for smugglers. Desperate for some real action, Peake gets his chance when France declares war on England and descends into the bloody madness of the Terror. Peake is entrusted with a mission to wreck the … mission to wreck the French economy by smuggling fake banknotes into Paris. His activities take him down Paris streets patrolled by violent mobs and into the sinister catacombs beneath the French capital. And they bring him close to famous characters of the day: the English feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, her American lover Gilbert Imlay who acts as George Washington’s agent in Paris, and the British/American writer and revolutionary Thomas Paine. As opposition to the Terror mounts, Peake fights to carry out his mission — and to save the life of the woman he loves.

This book is fictional but it could very well be a true story. Dipicting the true horrors of the French Revolution
Main character, Nathan, is a British Naval Officer in late 1700’s. He ends up smuggling things to France undercurrent he is an American, but is actually assisting England thwarts the French Terror Revolution. Nathan has multiple adventures and close calls. Interesting read.
Enjoyable tale, could use better editing
If you like historical fiction, this a great read!
Great historical novel.
I stopped after 4 chapters. I simply didn’t care to turn the page.
Probably what the life of a sailor was like at the time.
Great read but, brush up on your British-French history of the time
I have read a lot of sea stories but this is not one of the best
A lot of territory and scenarios are covered in this novel. While it takes some time to get into the story, the characters are interesting.
Great variety of locations and situations. Action is as much intellectual intrigue as physical danger. Paints a wonderful historical picture of the times and living situations during the French Revolution.
Favorite Historical time period to read about, along the lines of Horatio Hornblower
I enjoyed the intrigue of a British Naval officer posing as an American smuggler being used as a pawn by the Admiralty. Sail on, Nathaniel Peake!
nice historical fiction page turner
This book had real history, some real people mixed in together with fiction. The fictional parts and characters were believable. Written very well and kept my interest. The ending was not predictable. The high sea parts of this character’s adventure sounded frightening and description seemed very real.
Very good historical read
Good character development, but at times it got caught in an eddy of the story’s current.
Very interesting to read of characters that probably existed during the time of the Revolution in the States, and more specifically of the French revolution and the part that England played.
Reminiscent of Capt Jack Aubrey series. British naval yarn taking place early 1800s
The book is a good story telling reading, the tale has very good nautical detail and is very good for understanding ship operations & navy tactics.
While the story is good it does show the bias of
the British establishment views of the French revolution. The Revolution’s terror violence was depicted in a historically 1 sided manner with no talk …
