A National Book Award finalist by Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo. Walking through the misty Florida woods one morning, twelve-year-old Rob Horton is stunned to encounter a tiger—a real-life, very large tiger—pacing back and forth in a cage. What’s more, on the same extraordinary day, he meets Sistine Bailey, a girl who shows her feelings as readily as Rob hides his. As they learn to trust each … each other, and ultimately, to be friends, Rob and Sistine prove that some things—like memories, and heartache, and tigers—can’t be locked up forever. Featuring a new cover illustration by Stephen Walton and an excerpt of Kate DiCamillo’s newest novel, Raymie Nightingale.

This book is very good for children 10 and older. Not that the younger ones can’t read, but the understanding of this book might be extremely hard for little ones. This book has wonderful characters, each filled with its own characteristics. In my opinion, this book doesn’t have so much words that kids don’t understand, but this is only my opinion. This book is also fantastic for adults, who likes to read stories, and knowing these unbelievably extraordinary stories! The story is fascinating, so get ready to read!!!
Two twelve-year-old misfits who are dealing with some common problems (broken families, relocation to new schools, loneliness) in very different ways become unexpected allies when the boy discovers a real live tiger caged in the woods behind his home. When he shares this information with a girl who rides his bus, it unleashes a storm of ethical questions and emotional situations for both the kids and the adults around them. This short book packs a lot of food for thought.
A haunting and sad story for young people …

I absolutely LOVE this book! Seriously, Kate Dicamillo is an amazing author. Check out her other books like “Because of Winn-Dixie” you’ll see how the main character from this book and the main character from that book are alike.

The Tiger Rising
By Kate DiCamillo
Review by LG Ward age 11
The Tiger Rising is a book full of adventure, friendship, and heartache. After Rob Horton’s mom dies, Rob and his father move from their home in Jacksonville to a motel called the Kentucky star. Rob rides the bus to school everyday and meets a very special friend named Sistine. Even though Sistine is kind of dramatic and emotional, they become good friends. When Rob discovers a tiger in a cage, he starts to feel emotions that he told himself he would never feel again. Rob decides to tell Sistine about the tiger, but she’s not happy that the tiger is in a cage. So they make a plan to let it go, but things do not go as planned.
I give this book four stars, it was an amazing book and I love Kate DiCamillo although this book was not my favorite. I really enjoyed the fact that this book had lots of action and heart touching moments. It was incredibly detailed and I loved how you could read a sentence and instantly feel what the characters were feeling and see in your mind what was happening at that exact moment in the story. My favorite character in the story was Sistine, she didn’t care what anyone thought of her, she was bold and said what was on her mind and she stuck to what she said even if she knew it might be risky. Overall, this book was great and I would definitely recommend it to friends and family. However, I only gave it 4 stars because the book had more sad moments than it did happy moments, and was a slow read for me.
Such a great book.
this is a good book
