I was excited to read this highly recommended novel, and I was not disappointed.
fantastic-
It is little wonder that Mr. Ci has collected so many awards and accolades for this trilogy–the Chinese Lord of the Rings. A magnificent epic. Thought-provoking, educational, truly frightening at times. A vast amount of hard science interwoven throughout the telling that, at times, forces you to advance your own learning and understanding.
This book (and the two that follow) give a different way of thinking as to how society would manage to carry on after an extinction event without losing all progress made up to that point. It also creates a society where different elements of it are greatly at odds with each other.
Uses real science in a very creative way. Loved it! But most women didn’t like it at all.
I think the trilogy of which this is one volume will eventually rank among the great scifi works of all time. The universe is well crafted and intriguing, and the entire book is quite thought provoking.
First rate!! Read the entire trilogy!!
After seeing that so many people I admire like Bill Gates and Barack Obama had it as one of their favorite novels I had to take the plunge. I loved the story but a couple of warnings are warranted: 1) only read the first book if you will go for the whole trilogy – the reason is that the first book while engrossing offers little in the sense of conclusion and is basically setting up the second book in the series, and 2) the book is heavy on scientific descriptions so if you’re not into hard Sci-fi and prefer Space Operas it might feel as too much work.
Spoiler Alert – don’t read the rest if you’d prefer to go without knowing more about the book, that’s what I did and probably helped my enjoyment of the book.
So here’s the description with spoiler. The heart of the story is that an intelligent extraterrestrial civilization in the brink of extinction establishes communication with Earth, and with the aid of some humans who have lost faith in humanity invite them to come to Earth and destroy humans. They send an invasion force that will arrive in 450 years so humans are running against the clock to find a way to fight them.
This is science fiction at its best!
This time the aliens don’t arrive in New York or Washington DC and don’t communicate primarily with English speaking people but with people from China. Fascinating science fiction beautifully written.
Best sci-fi book I’ve read in a while.
Groundbreaking science fiction book that makes you think. There’s something here for everyone
I loved the sci-fi concepts in the book, but the ending was unsatisfying and felt like a cop-out.
I was blown away by the imaginative sci-fi world building and story presentation in The Three-Body Problem. For sci-fi lovers this is a page-turner and a nice way to get lost in an imaginative adventure while soaking up sunshine on a tranquil beach.
Either me or the book is dense, I suspect it’s the former. I’ve always meant to go back and try to sort out better the plot and characters. I wanted to like it but stumbled. Maybe next time.
