In the rugged Australian Outback, three generations of Clearys live through joy and sadness, bitter defeat and magnificent triumph — driven by their dreams, sustained by remarkable strength of character… and torn by dark passions, violence and a scandalous family legacy of forbidden love.
It is a poignant love story, a powerful epic of struggle and sacrifice, a celebration of individuality and … individuality and spirit. Most of all, it is the story of the Clearys’ only daughter, Meggie, who can never possess the man she so desperately adores — Ralph de Bricassart. Ralph will rise from parish priest to the inner circles of the Vatican… but his passion for Meggie will follow him all the days of his life.

A romantic classic. A captivating story with an interesting Australian background.
Great book!
Good story coupled with late 19th and early 20th century history of Australia/NZ.
I read it years ago when after watching the mini series – I always find the novels so much more interesting this way and this one was no different – I loved it
One of a kind. Unforgettable book
One of my all-time favorite books. Loved the multi-generational saga and vivid descriptions.
Great book. The characters were memorable. The scenery was lush and the story was so easy to get caught up in. Definitely a book you can’t put down but hate for it to end.
Read it years ago.
old drama classic. There really is a good reason it was made into a mini-series. (Of course, the mini-series was terrible.)
A true classic. It will never get old. It’s a soap opera with a great story and amazing characters.
I remember being very emotional (and sad) when reading it!
It could happen if it hasn’t already…true to life.
