In the rugged Australian Outback, three generations of Clearys live through joy and sadness, bitter defeat and magnificent triumph — driven by their dreams, sustained by remarkable strength of character… and torn by dark passions, violence and a scandalous family legacy of forbidden love.
It is a poignant love story, a powerful epic of struggle and sacrifice, a celebration of individuality and … individuality and spirit. Most of all, it is the story of the Clearys’ only daughter, Meggie, who can never possess the man she so desperately adores — Ralph de Bricassart. Ralph will rise from parish priest to the inner circles of the Vatican… but his passion for Meggie will follow him all the days of his life.

Set in Austrailia, it is a multi-decade story about a young girl and a young priest.
Absolutely couldn’t put it down! Wonderful book.
This book is very long and yet it’s the kind of book you wish were twice as long and never ended. A wonderful romantic story of loss, forbidden love and a desire for power that supersedes all else. A classic story that stays with you and characters that ebb into your real life so that you grow as they grow and miss them when the book ends. I loved …
I have read this book at least 11 times since the first time I read it many years ago! Truly one of my all time favorites!
Another of my very favorite stories! I want to read it again.
The twists and turns of unhappy people and how it effects their world. The guarded truths about the Catholic Church ( I am one myself so I can say that).
Celibacy is out dated and there is beauty in the down under country.
I read this as a young woman and was enthralled. I love novels that follow people and families through the years.
Loved it, read it several times
I loved this book! The story is so engrossing and the characters are so well developed.
One of my all-time favorites. Just ordered it for my eReader and can’t wait to read it again!
Very good book!
One of my favorite reads!
This book was very intresting and you learned a great deal about Australia and you wanted to know more…especially the Catholic church’s role and they were political.
I read this book years ago but I still remember how very much I enjoyed it.
One of my very favorite books of all time. Didn’t want it to end.
I loved the descriptive way the author shares about the Australian countryside. You get to see a family and a little girl who loves the family priest and how his love grows for her into adulthood. Steamy and a definite page Turner.
I read it when it first came out. Excellent
If you only saw the mini-series, do yourself a favor and read the book. There is so much more to the story that the series just skims the surface. The writing is beautiful and the characters are so richly developed. It will keep you busy for quite a while, but you will savor every minute of it. I highly recommend it!
Probably one of the best books I’ve read. A true classic.
Book was almost as good as the made for tv series. Well written novel.
