In the rugged Australian Outback, three generations of Clearys live through joy and sadness, bitter defeat and magnificent triumph — driven by their dreams, sustained by remarkable strength of character… and torn by dark passions, violence and a scandalous family legacy of forbidden love.
It is a poignant love story, a powerful epic of struggle and sacrifice, a celebration of individuality and … individuality and spirit. Most of all, it is the story of the Clearys’ only daughter, Meggie, who can never possess the man she so desperately adores — Ralph de Bricassart. Ralph will rise from parish priest to the inner circles of the Vatican… but his passion for Meggie will follow him all the days of his life.

All time favorite! Feels like you’re right there in early Austrailia with earthy characters and forbidden romances. I’ve read it 5 times, have seen the movie 3 times and about to read it again.
Wonder book one of the best although it is long but so worth it
A great story that will hold your interest from cover to cover.
One of the best books you could find. Good enough that they made a successful movie of it. Read this one!
This is one of those family epics set in Australia. It was my favorite book in my early teens.
One of my very favorites
One of my very favorite books! Hated for it to end.
Old bu goody page turner.
Great history and multidimensional story. Loves it and didn’t want it to end!
Read it in 24 hours. Couldn’t put it down.
I read this a while ago but it is one of my all time favorites.
I’ve read this book a few times over the years! It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read and I’ve read a lot of books!
I read this book so long ago and well before the mini series and still think of it fondly. It’s a classic.
A great read!
A more-than-usually-interesting sweeping family saga.
Wonderful
I read this over 40 years ago and it remains one of my favorites. Set in Australia, it is a sweeping epic of a family and those close to them. Riveting, action packed and hard to put down. I highly recommend The Thorn Birds.
This is an among story.
I’ve read this book twice. It is one you can’t it down.
Very realistic characters set in a troubling time. It is easy to believe this series of events. Skip the movie and read the book – it is so much richer.
