One of my favorite authors.
I had trouble deciding on a 3 or 4 for this one, and finally went with the 4 because by the end the book and characters grew on me. For a thriller, it wound up being a slow read — and I’m not entirely sure why. Part way through the story I became confused by what was going on, and that confusion also came across in the characters because it was a story that involved a serial killing in the works and intervention by 3 different agencies: FBI Mobile Response Team, Local small town law enforcement, and an undercover cop who just happens to be visiting her hometown and was the one who discovered the body. Seems like it could have been simpler, and another part of the perhaps needless complexity involved why the LAPD cop, Kara, was on leave, and a romance between her and the head of the FBI mobile response team. See what I mean? So essentially the killer has been practicing for many years to avenge a childhood trauma, and he is finally at the end of who he has to kill. This serial killer is highly organized (rigid) about his timing, which the FBI knows and is putting pressure on to stop things before it is too late. The Mobile Response team joins forces with the local PD, and one of the local cops is also in jeopardy. The head of the Mobile Response team is a Cuban man by the name of Matt Costa. One other layer of complexity is that the FBI profiler (Catherine) is also offsite, and has a backstory that gets woven in. You can see how this has a lot to keep track of that a typical thriller does not necessarily require. So be forewarned. By the end, I did like it, but think the book could have been much simpler. Seems like Brennan is starting a new series.
This book will have you riveted and page turning quickly, and when the last page is turned you will be wanting more, and it looks like you might get your wish!
Hard to imagine being on vacation, mandatory, and then being dragged rather willingly into a serial murder case. That is exactly what happens to LAPD Detective Kara Quinn, she finds a body and the rest is what you need to find out as you look for answers. We also meet FBI Special Agent Matt Costa, as he tries to save lives as the next murder of what he expects will be three happens.
You never know what will set someone off, and the perpetrator here has lost touch with reality, but will he be stopped, and when you see the length of what he is prepared for, well, be safe!
A book that will linger with you long after the last page is turned!
I received this book though Net Galley and the Publisher Mira, and was not required to give a positive review.
This is an excellent beginning to Ms. Brennan’s new series! I thoroughly enjoyed this fast paced, well written, entertaining romantic suspense novel. I am looking forward to the next installment in this series, and I am glad that Lucy Kincaid will keep me occupied until then. Ms. Brennan never disappoints her readers!
An auto-buy author for me since her first book.
This book definitely kept me on my toes. I didn’t know what would happen next. The only bad thing I would say is it’s a very long book. And it was a little hard to get through at times.
If I could give this book 10 starts, I would! This in hands down one of the best Brennan book yet! I love Luci Kinkaid series, but I honestly think this book surpass it . Love it!
The first book in a new series by Alison Brennan, the Mobile Response Team is a new team not even fully formed yet that’s lead by SAC Mathias Costa. Mathias is still trying to get his profiler and friends to not quit profiling and join the team and the cast that landed on his desk is just the one to do it, The Triple Killer. Kara Quinn is an undercover LAPD detective and due the the events of her last case she’s on administrative leave. Her boss and friend recommended she get out of town, so she went home to Liberty Lake, Oregon. It turned out to not be quite the vacation she needed when she finds the body of a nurse by the lake the first victim of the Triple Killer.
Mathias and a few others go to Liberty Lake, the point of MRT is to help aid rural area PDs that aren’t otherwise capable of handling situations like this. Ever three years this killer strikes they haven’t yet determined victimology but it’s the same way all three time and every crime scene is clean not evidence and what they have found isn’t in the system. Mathias is determined to catch the guy this time. Kara having several good friends on the local PD force and being the one who found the first victim has a few idea she’ not afraid to share. Mathias’ initially thought she’s could be trouble or she could be helpful and she is a little bit of both. Kara gives some helpful insight and the profiler digs deep enough to discover just who this person is and why he’s killing. But, will they be able to stop him before he kills again?
This is mostly a mystery/thriller but there is a romantic element between Kara and Mathias. It’s not a full on romance as there is no HEA. Like with the Lucy Kincaid series, I believe, the ongoing story of Mathias and Kara romance will go through the series. Overall, this was a great read. I enjoy Allison Brennan but I haven’t read one of her books since before Luck Kincaid got her own series. I loved the flawed characters, Kara has a lot going on for her with her upbringing and her current career path. Their profiler Dr. Catherine Jones lost her sister to a serial killer recently and had a crisis of faith in her job. Mathias, well not much is said about him yet but I’m hopeful and Brennan doesn’t disappoint. This was a fantastic first for the new series and I’m already looking forward to the next to see where she lead the MRT next.
I love Allison Brennan’s new series about Mobile Response Team! The Third to Die kept me on the edge of my seat and up many late nights reading. Allison Brennan as once again proven that she is a wonderful storyteller. I loved all the new characters that she introduced. The Third to Die is about a newly created FBI Mobile Response Team, under the leadership of Mathias “Matt” Costa. The Triple Killer strikes again before the Mobile Response Team is officially formed and the team members selected separately make their way to Liberty Lake, Washington. The Triple Killer has killed six victims over the course of six years, always on March 3, 6 and 9, three years apart. While on a forced vacation from LAPD, Detective Kara Quinn stumbles across the body of the latest victim, a nurse Victoria Manners, hours after The Triple Killer murdered her. Like the others, there are no clues or evidence left behind. Matt enlists the help of Dr Caroline Jones, FBI Profiler to assist with the case. Kara assists Matt with the case. I love how the team is able to connect all the other cases together and hope to find the killer before he completes the third kill this time around. Like all of Allison Brennan’s, The Third to Die is filled with incredible characters, thrilling plot twists and unexpected turns of events. I really love everything about this new series and cannot wait for the upcoming books in the series. Allison Brennan continues to amaze me with her writing and to deliver incredible thrillers.
This story took off from page 1 and was a rollercoaster until the end. Many subplots happening which kept the story moving. So glad this is the start of a new series!
Like this new series. Great characters.
Favorite Quotes:
“Six months… Six months and the triplets start kindergarten.” She looked at her FitBit. “Five months, twenty-six days.”… Kara was still hung up on triplets. She’d definitely shoot herself. Or never have sex again.
Small town cop with a small town girlfriend and a small town life. Kara almost felt sorry for him. Like he still believed in Santa Claus and she was going to burst his bubble.
My Review:
This was quite a complicated and multifaceted tale with a full cast of compelling, intriguing, and complex characters. I quickly fell into this brilliantly contrived, tautly written, and brain-tickling vortex that alternated between the killer and those doggedly working to find him and end his spree.
The storylines packed a visceral punch and were cunningly crafted, quickly paced, and occasionally cringe-worthy. I was rabid to know all the deets about everybody and everything, and even when I knew who the killer was and why – I was still rabid to know how it would resolve. Basically, I was rabid and close to hissing at any interruption of my perusal. Pity my poor little husband.
Despite her prolific body of work, this was my first exposure to the shrewd and haunting storytelling and profoundly insightful character development of Allison Brennan. I was an instant fangirl, although I wouldn’t want to get too close as I would imagine her interior life may be a bit scary to inhabit.
Kara is an LAPD undercover cop. She is on a forced vacation and she is NOT happy about it. Kara decides to spend some time with her grandmother in Washington. She ends up running across a dead body. This leads to a serial killer investigation with the FBI. And of course, being a witness…she inserts herself into the investigation.
Kara is a character I can truly revel in! She is one disrespectful, smart, tough cop with some unique skills. I swear, I thought she had ESP through most of this read. She is on top of it! And nothing escapes her notice. She becomes vital to the investigation of this 3/3 serial killer. Now, don’t get me wrong…this is a team effort and and this team has a great set of skills. They know how to use them and to work together to capture their target!
There is a lot going on in this story. I really enjoyed the chase in this one. It is very complex and intricate. I love a smart read that really keeps me guessing. This story is a slow build of intensity and intrigue. You just read faster and faster to get to the answers. And to the final killing…can they stop this serial killer…you MUST read this to find out!
I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.
Wow, really enjoyed this thriller. Great characters. Excellent series opener which ended leaving me curious and ready to continue the journey with Detective Kara Quinn and FBI special agent Mathias Costa; cannot wait for book #2. Highly recommend.
I really liked this new FBI Mobile Response Team series by Allison Brennan. The setup of how the Team came to be was well explained and their first case was twisted and vengeful. The characters were strong, especially Kara Quinn an LA detective that was an unexpected temporary addition to the team. I look forward to reading more books in this series.
The Third to Die is the fabulous kick-off to Brennan’s new series. The characters draw you in from page one and the action doesn’t stop. Brennan is always good at getting into the killer’s head and this is no exception. You will be up all night turning pages, but make sure to leave the lights on.
The Third to Die is the start of a brand new series by Allison Brennan, and she certainly knows how to build tension. This one pulls you in right out of the gate with the perspective of a serial killer, and from there we get introduced to the key players. The story has good flow, and the tension steadily rises throughout the book. There were a few lags here and there, but overall, the story held my interest and kept me engaged. As the start of a series, the characters that make up the Mobile Response Team are interesting and the type that I’ll look forward to seeing again in future books. All in all, this first in the series is well-written, entertaining, and a great intro to the characters. I’ll be interested to see where it all goes from here.
First off I gotta say kudos to these female authors for writing such badass female characters. Kara Quinn definitely gets added to my top favorite heroines.
I have been a fan of this author since her early romantic thrillers. It’s been a while since she has had a new series and I for one was over the moon. FBI Agent Matt Costa and LAPD Detective Kara Quinn are perfect as the leads. They are supported by strong secondary characters/team members who will all round out the newly formed Mobile Response Team.
The killer they are chasing commits gruesome murders and keeps the team on their toes but his years of killing are about to come to an end with this team tracking him.
I look forward to more books in the series.
OMG…I loveeeeee this book, hands down one of my fav suspense reads.
My heart racing the whole time, chasing serial killer whose already many steps ahead, prevent another murder, while solving the motives behind those murders, this book keeps me guessing and wondering who’s the serial killer is and keeps me expecting something bad will happen on the next page. Then there’s a hint of sweetness to break all the suspense. Oh yeah I love everything, the mystery, the gory, the chase, the personal affair, the smalltown setting, the characters, the sweetness, it’s a complete package.
If you love suspense romance, this book is highly recommended, and definitely a MUST-READ.
