When a teenage girl goes missing on a remote island, the police are unable to locate her. So a quirky local boy decides to help. Billy’s a little young to play detective, but he’s kind of a child prodigy – or he thinks he is. Either way, he does have a very good reason to want the police off his beach. His style of investigation is unlike anything you’ve seen before, but it’s strangely effective. … strangely effective. Until the trail of clues leads him unexpectedly close to home. Now Billy learns he’s been playing a dangerous game. Because the girl didn’t just disappear, she was taken. And the person who took her is now after him.
What started out as fun has become a desperate fight for survival.
But how do you catch a killer – when you’re just a kid?

Loved the main character from the first page until the last. The author kept me going in so many different directions. Excellent!
A 12-year old “scientist” helps unravel a murder mystery on the usually idyllic island where he lives with his single father. In the process, he almost unravels his and his father’s lives. This book is what I would have called an “easy beach read” in pre-quarantine days.
I liked the book but it was scary to the point where you didn’t know if you wanted to finish it if you were home alone. For suspense this is one good read.
Entertaining read. Bought second in series right away. Shows how fun it was!
Interesting story told through the eyes of an 11 year old boy. Won’t include any spoilers but it has some plot twists. One of which was a stretch but made a good story. Recommended
Lovely original ideas book. Well done Greg!
I found this book hard to follow from a 10 year old POV. It was a bit shocking to find a child so fascinated with death. Other than the chilling descriptions of death from one so young, the book was a little lack luster. However that could also be attributed to the POV, so that explains my low rating.
Wow what a great book! At first I thought yuch through the eyes of a 10 year old boy. But wow what a great book!!!!
Lots of twists and turns, and unexpected events. Very interesting and nail biting at times. I did enjoy reading this book but the gutter language was a bit much and so unnecessary.
I enjoyed this book so much. I couldn’t put it down. I’ve got the next book and am anxious to start on it. Most of the book is from an 11yr old boy. At first I thought oh no but thought I’ll give it a go and am glad I did. I didn’t see the end coming. I don’t want to tell too much about it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Take a chance I did
I simply LOVED this book. The imagination of an eleven year old can go anywhere. Can’t wait for his next investigation!
Interesting characters. Not too many 11-year-old detectives.
It fooled me! Very good read.
I loved the charactors. I’ll read the rest in the series for sure!!
I really, really enjoyed this book. I love the perspective and how it was written! I just started the second book and it is great as well!
Just when you think you know ‘who did it’…changes. Pretty well written characters. Made me keep turning the pages.
I enjoyed this mystery from the young boys point of view.
When you finish the book, you’ll realize you came so close. You saw the picture of the kid on the cover, and you came so close to not finding out. You almost missed knowing what was found in rockpools. And you almost missed reading the best book you had read in quite some time.
Another great Dunnett novel! There are twists and the biggest one is a stunner, you’ll probably figure it out a bit before it’s fully revealed by the author but I saw stars for just a sec when it hit me! Highly recommend this enjoyable page-turner!
This is one of the best suspense novels I’ve read in a long time. I loved the first person point of view from a young lead character–in a very adult world. I’ll be looking for more books by this author. Creepy and tense!
