When a teenage girl goes missing on a remote island, the police are unable to locate her. So a quirky local boy decides to help. Billy’s a little young to play detective, but he’s kind of a child prodigy – or he thinks he is. Either way, he does have a very good reason to want the police off his beach. His style of investigation is unlike anything you’ve seen before, but it’s strangely effective. … strangely effective. Until the trail of clues leads him unexpectedly close to home. Now Billy learns he’s been playing a dangerous game. Because the girl didn’t just disappear, she was taken. And the person who took her is now after him.
What started out as fun has become a desperate fight for survival.
But how do you catch a killer – when you’re just a kid?

Excellent: Grabbed me and didn’t let me go…
It isn’t often that you come upon a novel that it is so engaging that you could give it a five-plus star rating. Gregg Dunnett is very skilled at representing the mind of a very bright eleven-year-old boy whose thoughts draw you in and whose conclusions thicken the plot by adding fuel to the fire. Billy cannot resist a mystery – one that everyone is talking about but no one can resolve. Is he hot on the trail or just stepping on others toes? You cannot help feeling that he might be right but there is much more to the story than what meets his eyes and…
There is more to this novel than just a mystery. It reflects on a father/son relationship, a young boy’s obsession and dream, and a human weakness that ultimately leads one to commit a crime. Interesting characters and an intriguing plot held my attention and kept me guessing. No less important was the quality of writing that made this an enjoyable read for me. Gregg Dunnett is now on my most desirable author’s list.
This was a good book. I liked the characters and the way the story moved along. I will read more from this author.
One of the best I’ve read in a long time. I had a hard time guessing the ending. Loved the author’s understanding of how a young boy thinks.
Great read with lots of twists and turns that keeps you guessing “who done-it?’
Really enjoyed The Things You Find in Rockpools. The characters were well rounded, and had quite a few twist and turns. The person I thought was the “bad” guy wasn’t. I did figure it out the two who dunits before the book did, but a solid read. Have already downloaded 2 other books by this author
Good Book!
I only read about 1/4 of this book.
It didn’t interest me. I was bored.
This was a quirky story, but a good read. It is written from the perspective of a highly intelligent, but somewhat of a loner young boy who dreams of being an oceanographer and scientist. He lives with his surfer enthusiast father on a small summer resort island on the Atlantic coast. The boy’s father does maintenance work for a group of vacation rental cottages. A young woman mysteriously disappears after a local community party and it sets the whole island on edge. The young boy decides to try to solve the mystery. His intelligence coupled with his immaturity gets him into a number of tight situations. There is a lot of misdirection and characters who are not what they seem to be. I liked the fact that this story was different and not the typical mystery plot. I thought the author did a good job getting into the head of a smart, but still very young boy with all the fears and misgivings of someone his age. The story moved at a good pace and had enough twists and turns to hold my interest.
11 year old Billy is a treasure. He is nerdy and weird. He is trusting and loveable. He is excited about the unusual things. It is like the author was in the head of a kid, the kind of kid I want to have a conversation with.
Different type of murder mystery. It was from the prospective of an 11 year old. Started out thinking how odd, but I really enjoyed it. Was unable to figure out who was the murderer until author was ready to expose. That’s a good mystery.
Enjoyed it very much.
Surprised at the ending
I loved the setting, the story, and especially the narrator. The ending was unexpected yet entirely logical. It’s a good way to spend a few hours.
Likeable characters, suspenseful, twists and turns, kept wanting to read more.
What an excellent story as well as characters. It starts out as the 11 year old kid tells his story just like any 11 year old kid would. He’s a kid and he is believable. We’re listening to his brain talk. Little by little we learn through his view why things are the way they are. Can’t wait to read the next one.
I was not expecting the end. Loved the main character.
An original way of eleven year old Billy telling his story directly to me as If I were there with him as things are happening. Gregg Dunnett does a great job of depicting the feelings and fears of an average eleven year old. But Billy is not average and he is well aware of this. He has a scientific curiosity about his world and comes to believe he can solve the case of a missing teenage girl who is on vacation in the little beach town where he and his father live. Just when you think you know who did it another suspect comes to light. Its too bad the vulgar language increases as the story goes on.
I quit reading because of the filthy language
Most of the story is told by the unusally clever boy, whose hobbies are sometimes hardly believable. In the book several unexpected twists are included, by the end they are already predictable. Good reading before sleep.
Very different great read!
