Told in alternating timelines, THE THINGS WE LEAVE UNFINISHED examines the risks we take for love, the scars too deep to heal, and the endings we can’t bring ourselves to see coming. Twenty-eight-year-old Georgia Stanton has to start over after she gave up almost everything in a brutal divorce–the New York house, the friends, and her pride. Now back home at her late great-grandmother’s estate … great-grandmother’s estate in Colorado, she finds herself face-to-face with Noah Harrison, the bestselling author of a million books where the cover is always people nearly kissing. He’s just as arrogant in person as in interviews, and she’ll be damned if the good-looking writer of love stories thinks he’s the one to finish her grandmother’s final novel…even if the publisher swears he’s the perfect fit.
Noah is at the pinnacle of his career. With book and movie deals galore, there isn’t much the “golden boy” of modern fiction hasn’t accomplished. But he can’t walk away from what might be the best book of the century–the one his idol, Scarlett Stanton, left unfinished. Coming up with a fitting ending for the legendary author is one thing, but dealing with her beautiful, stubborn, cynical great-granddaughter, Georgia, is quite another.
But as they read Scarlett’s words in both the manuscript and her box of letters, they start to realize why Scarlett never finished the book–it’s based on her real-life romance with a World War II pilot, and the ending isn’t a happy one. Georgia knows all too well that love never works out, and while the chemistry and connection between her and Noah is undeniable, she’s as determined as ever to learn from her great-grandmother’s mistakes–even if it means destroying Noah’s career.

I was excited to dive into this read. I was afraid it would break me. And surprisingly, this book didn’t make me cry but the FEELS are definitely there. This story was told in a very unique way and I enjoyed how past and present collided. I thought I knew where this book was going but Rebecca brought out gasps and shocks to the reader and I loved every moment of it. This book wowed me and I’m so glad she shared this wonderful story with us. It was a beautiful read and I couldn’t put it down. I was completely enamored with these characters and the lives they lead. I really don’t want to ruin this story for you and I think you should go in totally blind. Just read and enjoy!
The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros absolutely gutted me. It shredded my heart. It broke my heart into millions of pieces. And here I am, paralyzed by the breathtaking feels, choking on the heartbreaking emotions and falling in love with this story a bit more with each passing second. If they say that true love cannot happen without pain, then this story is my true love.
This story runs in two parallel universe. One is set in 1940 world war era, telling the unfinshed tale of Scarlett Stanton and the pilot she loved Jameson. Another is set in modern day world. Where Georgia Stanton has inherited everything after her great grandmother and the most renowned romance author Scarlett Stanton’s death. Including her last unfinished manuscript narrating her own love story. Noah Harrison, the brooding and famous writer wants to finish it. Georgia doesn’t trust him to do the story justice but it’s the best option. And Noah certainly doesn’t want to fall in love with the woman who hates his guts.
Timeless is the right word for this love story. It is magnificently written. And she wrote two love stories in one amazing book. Georgia is so smart, creative, strong and compassionate that my heart breaks to see this brilliant woman getting hurt over and over again. And then there is Noah. Arrogant. Rough around the edges. No nonsense and straightforward. But wow this man can charm even the most strict nun if he wants. He has the most beautiful heart that brought Georgia back to life. They had trust issues. Fire of hate. Burning sexual tension that just exploded after some time. And they had a connection that is achingly beautiful. The author touched my heart and altered it forever. The love story of Scarlett and Jameson will get an ending. Something I didn’t saw coming. And when I read it, I just stopped reading and started crying. I cannot tell you if it was happiness or sadness or the brutal effect of powerful emotions.
My mind is still in a fog of emotional attacks. Because I have no idea how to process these overwhelming feels after finishing The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros. Poignant. Mindblowing. A true masterpiece.
I reviewed an early copy voluntarily
Huge crush for this story. Two love stories for two very different eras, but after all love still has the same intensity, right? Rebecca Yarros manages to seduce me once again with these charismatic and endearing characters and these two stories, one heartbreaking truth during the Second World War and the other modern and intense. We are not indifferent to this reading.
I am having difficulty writing words that can express the beauty of this novel. The dual storylines only enhance the poignancy of the book. The characters are fully fleshed out and filled with flawed beauty in a world that can be cruel. But what can happen is there can be a happily ever after. Be prepared to cry…a lot.
I so enjoyed this book, great characters and so many emotions. I couldn’t put it down. Noah and Georgia were just everything! It was wonderful to get the love story of Scarlett and Jameson. Just be prepared to feel all that’s between the characters and their journey.
I fell in love with Rebecca Yarros’s writing with the very first chapter of her book, Full Measures. Each book of hers I’ve read since has been a wonderfully entertaining read. But this one. This one is phenomenal!
NICUnurse’s Rating: I’m not even sure where to begin with this book. There is so much packed between the covers. There are so many working parts that had to be executed flawlessly for it to flow well. It’s a story within a story. It’s a contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and a historical romance with some elements of women’s fiction thrown in for good measure. The story follows our contemporary hero and heroine, Noah and Georgia, as well as our historical hero and heroine, Jameson and Scarlett. Told from four different points of view and with a nonlinear timeline, as well as a few letters from our historical couple, it’s wonderfully complex yet incredibly easy to read and follow the plot. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to read this one because it’s not a quick read, and once you dig in, you are not going to want to put it down.
This book evoked so, so many emotions. From the frustration, admiration, and animosity of Georgia and Noah, to the epic love story of Jameson and Scarlett, then the intense desire to know how it all played out regarding the unfinished book’s real and fictional aspects, at any given point in the story, I wasn’t sure what I was feeling all of my emotions were so entangled. I don’t usually care for historical romances, but the way this one was packaged in this particular book, I was riveted. I could go on for days waxing poetic about just how much I loved this book, but I’m afraid I would end up spoiling some aspect of the story for readers, and that would just be…tragic.
Obviously, I’m a huge fan of Rebecca Yarros’s books, and I’ve honestly loved them all. But I must say that this is her best work yet. It takes immense talent, as well as skill and imagination, to write a story like this, and I’m beyond impressed at how seamlessly she makes it seem. I’m positive this book will top my Best Reads of 2021 list! If I could give this book more than five stars, I would do so in a heartbeat.
I give The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros 5 out of 5 stars!
4.5, Unfinished Stars!
“Gran used to say she saw the characters as fully fleshed-out people with complicated pasts, set on a collision course. She saw their flaws as something to overcome.”
Just when you think you have a grasp on the kind of love story a Rebecca Yarros novel can give you, she has to go and deliver The Things We Leave Unfinished. The Things We Leave Unfinished is a unique and intriguing romance that operates on two alternating timelines. The Things We Leave Unfinished is an unforgettable love story that will mesmerize readers right until the very end…
The Things We Leave Unfinished starts off in the present time with Georgia and Noah. Noah has been brought in to finish her great-grandmother’s last book. Georgia isn’t too thrilled about the idea but allows to let Noah work on it as long as he gives it the ending she wants. Naturally, the two of them butt heads over this, and Noah will try his hardest to get Georgia to see things his way….Timeline #2 is Scarlett’s real-life romance told through the pages of her manuscript and letters from her love…
Overall, I thought this was a truly beautiful and unique story. The story flowed well and sucks you in instantly. The characters are real, flawed, and perfectly imperfect. I will be the first to admit that it took some time for me to get used to the alternating timelines/stories, but once I got into it, I was hooked! I loved all the little touches and the love letters. It made this story feel real and like the readers are a part of it.
The Things We Leave Unfinished is a love story that transcends time and pages. It’s a story about the risks we’re willing to take for love. It’s a story about secrets hidden in the past and the mess that’s left behind. It’s a story about thinking you know all of the pieces to it, but finding yourself completely wrong. Most of all, it’s a story of love and second chances.
At the end of the day, this story that Rebecca Yarros has given us will take you on one incredible journey that is sure to deliver all the feels.
This book was a journey that will definitely pull on your heartstrings. The storylines are raw and real which will leave you smiling and crying throughout the whole book.
The chemistry between Noah and Georgia is evident from the start. It was undeniable from their first meet cute, and it only grew stronger from there.
Getting to experience a second storyline through her grandmother’s letters and experiences made the book that much more intriguing and unique. Watching the story slowly unfold will have you wanting that once in a lifetime pure love.
I honestly think this is my new favorite from Rebecca. The twists and turns the book took along the way had me in awe up until the last page.
This book. I don’t even know where to start.
Rebecca Yarros always managed to make me loose my mind with her work.
Especially this one. It was seriously one of my favorite books I’ve read this year.
The Things We Leave unfinished is a story that withstands time and place.
It’s about two couples in two different times. One in the past and one in the present.
The main story of this book in my opinion was the story of Jameson and Scarlett. They met in 1940 in England while both of them worked for different positions in the war. Their story began fast. Their love for eachother was honestly so strong it really felt timeless.
The other part of the story that plays in the present is about Scarlett’s great granddaughter Georgia. After Scarlett’s death she has no one left that she really loves. That’s when she meets Noah Harrison the author who wants to keep Scarlett’s legacy alive in form of her unfinished book.
This book starts out really slow. I could feel myself get attached to all the characters, their struggles and their dreams. Rebecca Yarros managed to keep me on the edge of my seat throughout this whole story, especially during Scarlett and Jamesons parts. Their story especially was really emotional and I literally cried for the most part while reading the last 20%.
The Things We Leave Unfinished deserves all the stars I’m able to give and even more. Seriously one of my favorite reads of 2021.
The Things We Leave Unfinished is beautifully crafted story. It was emotional, loving, heartbreaking, and so much more. It’s been days since I finished it and I’m still thinking about it, and these characters will worm their way i to your heart. I loved every minute of it! This is a Must Read for 2021!
Achingly beautiful epic love story.
First off – words cannot express how much I adored this story. It was beautifully written and the most beautiful story I have ever read. It was also the best Rebecca Yarros novel I have ever read which is saying a lot as I adore her words!
This is really two love stories in one with a side romance or two. We first “meet” Jameson and Scarlett through a letter to each other at the beginning of the book. In re-reading this letter of introduction to their story – it is even more poignant now! Then we move directly to present day where Georgia who is a descendant of Scarlett’s is coming to terms with her divorce and soon meets the hot, but dubious in his book choices, Noah Morelli.
We soon learn that Noah wants to finish Scarlett’s unfinished autobiography of her profound love story with Jameson. Oh how I felt these two pop out of the pages and what they felt…I felt. Theirs was an epic love story told so beautifully through the pages already written and through their letters to each other during the war.
There is so much more to this story, but the joy is in finding out the details for yourself. Georgia has been bitterly hurt in the past and needs to learn to trust again to have any real shot at happiness. Noah has never found the right woman…or has he finally?
Scarlett and Jameson are falling in love during World War II in England, so we not only get two love stories – they occur on two different continents.
This one will tear your heart out as you delve into the story of Scarlett and Jameson and Scarlett’s love for her sister, Constance who has such a pivotal role in getting these two together and is such a true support for Scarlett during the war.
We alternate between the two storylines, but it flows so easily with the letters helping to serve as transitions. There are so many layers and facets to this story. It is truly a work of art.
I cannot adequately express how much I adored this story and it is several days later and I am still brought to tears over the beauty of Scarlett and Jameson’s love for each other. It was so eloquent, and heartwrenching in its beauty.
I voluntarily requested and read an advance reader copy, but can’t wait for my paperback to be in my hands to enjoy for all time. This one is a true epic and instant classic!!
Rebecca Yarros is an evil genius. I sat down on a Sunday afternoon, totally prepared to read a few chapters and hours later I found myself sobbing while I finished this book. While I read a lot, I can’t remember that last time I read a book in one afternoon.
I won’t go into any details because I don’t want to give anything away, but I will say that I loved how the story went back and forth between Scarlett and Georgia’s stories. I was equally engrossed in both, especially Scarlett’s. Hers is more of a classic love story that will have you swooning all over the place.
Do yourself a favor and go buy this book. I’m not going to say that you will cry, but it’s an extremely emotional read so maybe take some precautions. Make sure you have some tissues handy and a bottle of water to stay hydrated. And if there are other people in your house, maybe give them a heads that they may find them crying uncontrollably.
Can someone please explain to me how can one person have so much talent? Every single book I’ve read by Rebecca Yarros it blew me away. She has a way with words that will grab your heart and not let it go.
This story was a phenomenal read. I was a sobbing mess reading how sometimes life is not fair and takes away a lot from you. But then I was smiling because it also showed that sometimes life works in mysterious ways and it gives you all that you need when you least expect it.
The slow burn, the past intertwined with the present was effortless and it gave me all the feels. So i’m officially proclaiming this book as my favorite.

Okay. It’s official. I am having the worst reading month and it is all thanks to this MASTERPIECE. I kid you not, it’s been weeks since I’ve read it and I can’t stop thinking about it. I haven’t read anything of substance since. I don’t want to let it go.
Georgia and Noah were on fire together. I loved watching them going back and forth with each other. However, it was Scarlett & Jameson in the 1940s that took my breath away. Watching them come together during war and fall in love was a thing of beauty. I loved both timelines but I admit to wanting to spend more time in the past with Scarlett & Jameson! They were just transcendent. Those are the kinds of epic love stories I’m always searching high and low for and I’m so thrilled to have read about them.
Hands down this will be my favorite read of 2021. I’m calling it now. All the stars!!!
I know I’m late to the party but hey, I’m here now and fully understand why everyone talks so much about the author’s books and how much they love them.
It was a mesmerising story with a heroine that tries to change her life around 180 degrees and finds herself in a place full of beautiful settings and heartbreaking history.
This is one of those books that needs to be savoured and not rushed over because there are so many moments where you just need to put it down and feel. All the anguish moments that her grand grandmother had to go through, so much angst and love , everything adds up to a beautiful love story with a sad ending.
But the now moments between Georgia and Noah are so good, full of reliable content and that made me love this book even more.
If you haven’t read her books before, this is one you should start with.
4 Secrets and Love Stars!!
This book is another prime example of why when Rebecca Yarros writes a book I’m chomping at the bit to have it on my kindle so I can get lost in her words. This book is one that is almost two books in one as we’re getting Georgia Stanton’s story when she returns to her Great Grandmother’s home after her passing to discover a book that her Grandmother had worked on years before she became a best-selling author that was left unfinished because it was her personal love story that took place in the UK during WW II. So we spend time in the past and the present. And when Georgia finds herself reluctantly working with Noah Harrison, not only do they attempt to finish Scarlett and Jameson’s love story, they also discover their own love that slowly works its way to the surface.
This book is filled with passion in many different ways and I found myself very invested in Scarlett and Jameson’s story and everything they went through will navigating a war that is wreaking havoc on Scarlett’s beloved home country while also falling for an American that’s in the UK to fly for the Royal AF. As much as a “know it all” that Noah appears to be, and he’s really quite condescending at times, there’s something below the surface that when he and Georgia are in the same room reading letters that were written by Scarlett and Jameson that truly changes who they are.
I loved the back and forth between current time and past and seeing the grand love Scarlett and Jameson had and how that trickled down to those around them. There are several moments of agony in this book too, that had me crying, (which I’ve come to expect with a Rebecca Yarros book) and questioning if what Georgia and Noah were doing was the right thing.
As we progress through the book, more and more secrets are revealed and some people, i.e., Georgia’s smarmy ex-husband for one, get their comeuppance and I may have cackled with glee in those moments!! As much as I loved this book there were a few missed opportunities that I think would’ve added to this story and the grandeur of timeless love.
This is a book that is not to be missed from one of my absolutely favorite and go-to authors when I need to get all the feels and have a good cry and then come out with a smile on my face.
Wow. Just wow. Whenever I pick up a Rebecca Yarros book I know I will have the best romance in my hands. Rebecca is an author who weaves words of love, heart break and triumph. She expertly weaved two love stories together with a unique storyline that will leave you breathless.
I don’t even know how to put in to words how phenomenal this book was. Rebecca wrote a brilliant story that I know years from now will still be with me. This had all the feels and so much more.
This book is romance through and through. The best of 2021 so far and Rebecca’s best work to date.
You will not want to leave this unfinished!
6 stars!
Georgia Stanton is reeling after the death of her beloved grandmother, Scarlett. In charge of the estate, it falls to Georgia to make a decision when a publisher wants to have another author finish her grandmother’s last, unfinished novel.
Noah Harrison sees this as an opportunity of a lifetime. His typical writing style is very different from Scarlett Stanton’s, and that is exactly what makes him want to take on finishing the last work of the prolific and beloved author. But his ideas for the ending are very different than what Georgia has in mind for the story that turns out to be autobiographical, and not a happily ever after in real life story.
Told in dual timelines, this story is a beautiful blend of past and present love stories, one that was inevitable and love at first sight, one that takes a little more work and is more enemies to lovers. As Scarlett’s love with her WWII pilot is revealed through letters and chapters, it is quickly clear why she left this particular story unfinished. Their love was intense, quickly established, and fraught with wartime chaos. There were pieces that readers know will happen, but others took me completely by surprise. Georgia and Noah’s story is a little more tentative. Georgia doesn’t trust easily, and is still healing from having her trust shattered.
I loved getting to know Scarlett and Jameson through the letters and Scarlett’s unfinished chapters. These two loved with an intensity that can only be formed during wartime. I also loved watching Georgia and Noah work together in the present to put together the pieces of the past. Noah is the perfect hero to break through Georgia’s ice queen exterior and show her that not everyone will take advantage of her trust. I was a little surprised at how quickly I fell in love with this story and just how much I didn’t want to put it down. (I was reading while using the treadmill and absolutely sobbing at one point — that’s how involved I was and my husband was surprised he didn’t have to pick me up off the floor as a result.)
This story was everything I needed to read. I love a good historical, and the dual timeline was the perfect way to pull the historical aspects into this story while also keeping it contemporary.

This is my third book by this author and I am hooked on her words. I wasn’t expecting this writing style so It took me awhile to get into it but but with that said I finished this in what felt like no time. The storyline was like none I have ever read. I fell in love with all the characters. I am so glad I kept going even after being confused. This book grabbed my heart, tore it in two, and put it back together again. Amazing story.
