#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • New enemies rise and desire burns in the latest thrilling novel of the paranormal romance series the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Sola Morte, former cat burglar and safecracker, has given up her old life on the wrong side of the law. On the run from a drug lord’s family, she is lying low far from Caldwell, keeping her nose clean and her beloved grandmother safe. Her … her beloved grandmother safe. Her heart, though, is back up north, with the only man who has ever gotten through her defenses: Assail, son of Assail, who never meant to fall in love—and certainly not with a human woman. But they have no future, and not just because she doesn’t know he is a vampire, but because he is not about to stop dealing arms to the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Fate, however, has other plans for them. When Assail falls into a coma and lingers on the verge of death, his cousins seek out Sola and beg her to give him a reason to live. The last thing she wants is a return to her past, but how can she leave him to die?
As a lethal new enemy of the vampires shows its face, and the Brotherhood needs Assail back on his feet, Sola finds herself not only a target, but a mission-critical force in a war she doesn’t understand. And when Assail’s truth comes out, will she run from the horror . . . or follow her heart into the arms of the male who loves her more than life itself?

A bit slower than the other BDB books, but still liked it
While some of you realize that I’ve been disenchanted with the newer Black Dagger Brotherhood novels, I found this one a refreshing one. It had all the stuff I’ve been annoyed by, but because it added so much Vishous and Jane, I was rather forgiving of this one. It definitely needed more Assail and Sola, but still, Vishous and Jane aren’t sloppy seconds.
I was entertained. It was steamy and romantic. I am really hating Throe.
On to the next one!
PSA: VISHOUS DOESN’T CHEAT!!
This book was mis-advertised out the gate. It’s not Assail and Sola’s book; it’s Vishous and Jane’s. Assail and Sola are there but their story is background and so boring you wanted to skip their chapters like the Lesser chapters early in the series.
Here’s what’s getting me about Assail and Sola’s story. It’s was utterly predictable. And vanilla. I called everything that was gonna happen at like page 20 with them. It was basically unfair for any couple to be put in this book with all the unresolved issues w Vishous and Jane with the way the Chosen ended. Tbh Assail and Sola’s story should have been a novella.
The beginning of chapter 4 killed any chance for any other story to thrive. From there on out the books only viable story was Vishous and Jane. I’m not going to lie, I hated Jane for a chunk of the book. And V owned up to all his faults, numerous times. He made a very stupid decision in the beginning but owned to it and apologized.
Once all the necessaries happened with V and Jane their love story blossomed beautifully, lots of healing with themselves and between the two of them happend and it’s perfect. Their entire story was written as a true romance should have been. I’m in book hangover mode just from their love story. I can’t get over how much Vishous grew as a character and how he catapulted into intense heartthrob status.
V showed how to redeem yourself to your mate. How to stand up for your love and how to be there when he was needed. He talked and was emotional. He let himself touch and be touched. So after 11 books Vishous finally gets his HEA. It’s the best HEA I’ve read, exactly how happy ending should be written AND that Brother deserves some happiness.
Other notes:
Vitoria, what was the point?
Where the hell is Amalya?
Who took the damn book?
How’d the book get to the Sanctuary?
Murhder was a waste of ink and paper.
Jo is going to have problems very soon.
Throe is making demons
Vishous and Nicorette gum!
Vishous and My Little Pony pj bottoms
That damn cat!
Not everyone needs to be “shrinked” by Mary
Yesenia is the best part of the Assail/ Sola snoozefest.
+ MANNY IS THE MFN M.V.P. OF THE FIRST HALF OF THE BOOK!! “I sleep with my wife, Jane.” +
10 STARS JUST FOR VISHOUS ALONE.
I am a true J R Ward fan. I have every black dagger brotherhood book in both hardcopy and digital copy so they go where I go
Loved the book, love the series.
Sola Morte is living safely in Miami with her beloved grandmother, always looking over her shoulder for a threat that she’s sure will come. Assail is still in Caldwell but in a coma as his withdrawal from his drug addiction is not going well. Desperate to save him, his cousins find Sola and appeal for her help, using a slight bit of duplicity as she agrees to return to be at his side. Meanwhile, Vishous and Jane are experiencing some turmoil in their relationship as the Brotherhood is facing a new and ominous threat in the war against the Lessers…or are they the true enemy this time?
This was true, vintage BDB with its multiple storylines but it’s Sola and Assail at the forefront. Theirs is the story I’ve waited for and while there wasn’t a lot of drama, it was just what I wanted. Her grandmother Vovo added lots of comic relief and the tension built as Assail dragged his feet in telling Sola his true nature. Their journey was fun and sensual.
At first I was horrified that V and Jane were going down this dangerous path in their relationship and resented that it was even happening. However, it was important to the the Brotherhood and the connected events regarding the new threat. You’ll have to read it for yourself to understand the outcomes.
I’m still enjoying Jim Frangione’s brand of storytelling. He was brilliant in delivering Vovo’s dialogue, making me laugh out loud. There are so many bright moments (think pink pj bottoms) to balance the very real dangers and threats in the war. This was such a fun and interesting ride this time. I guess it’ll hold me until the next release.
JR Ward auto download for me
I love all the books in J. R. Wards, Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Thief was the latest installment. I’m not a real big fan of romance or vampires, but I absolutely have fallen in love with these books! If you haven’t seen or heard of them yet, look them up and give them a chance. You might just be as pleasantly surprised as I was. Highly recommend to anyone who likes paranormal romance, vampires, or just a really easy enjoyable read.
* Lots of Spoilers*
Okay so I am going to try really, really hard to articulate the way this book made me feel. Hopefully it won’t come out a huge jumbled mess. See the last few books in the BDB series have been double edge swords for me. In these recent books J.R. Ward has taken much beloved past characters and wrote them doing things so out of character for their personality. For example Tohr who I loved for most of the series, turned into an unlikable jerk since he came back after his Shellan’s death. I understand Wellsie death ripped him apart, but I am so sick of feeling like Autumn is his consolation prize. The way he treated and still at times treats his new shellan Autumn is so bad that it makes me wish that Ms Ward had not given him a book yet, as it is clear he wasn’t ready to remate. Another example is Qhuinn. I flippin’ adored Qhuinn….. Then he went cray cray in The Chosen. Now I don’t even want to read about his abusive, crappy father, raging self. I don’t know if I will ever get over the way he treated Layla, Blay, and Lyric. Now in this book She took my beloved V and made him selfish and ugly in my eyes. I can’t believe he thought about cheating let alone set up a cheating session with one of his old playthings. Am I suppose to be comforted by the fact that he didn’t follow through on his cheating?
One of my favorite things about Paranormal romances and BDB specifically is that mates don’t cheat. They are faithful period. J.R. Ward took that away from me too. Why Warden? I love you why??? Bonded males are not even suppose to want other women! Now like I said V doesn’t go through with it and for that I am glad because I would have never been able to forgive him. I still like V but I lost a lot of respect for his character. I don’t think of him as a good mate now. I will forever think of how instead of going to Jane and telling her that they had problems and needed to talk he called another woman and planned to have kinky sex with her. J.R. Ward said this was the last book for Jane and V. I pray to GOD that it is because if she keeps this up I will end up hating him.
I loved Assail in this book. He was great. I also really loved his cousins and I hope they get a book. Vovo was funny and really made the book. Sola on the other hand was just okay for me in past books and in this one she came off judgy and cold. I mean if someone came and told you the man you thought yourself in love with was dying and you were needed…. Would you
A) panic because the man you love is sick and dying and go to his side as fast as you can
B) offer to Skype call him or something because you can’t go
C) refuse to go sorry
D) both B & C
Well if you are Sola it would be D. I couldn’t believe she was like “can I call him or something?” and then was like “sorry not sorry but I can’t go.” Vovo makes her go and when she gets to Assail’s side she actually tells him “I LOVE YOU!”
Now I tried to get over her refusing to go to him at first. Even though it was cold blooded, but then she acted hateful when she found out he was a vampire. I really wondered what Assail seen in that judgy jerk. I didn’t feel their love at all. I felt Assail got screwed in the mate department. On top of that, it didn’t feel like a hea. It felt like an unfinished love story. So I am guessing more to come from them. Vitoria was a lame, useless character. She had no point, was boring, and took up way too many pages for my liking. Now I am very interested in Murhder and Jo. I can’t wait to read more on them. I just hope Murhder doesn’t start too much crap between Xhex and JM. I love them and I don’t want their HEA messed with. I really liked throe’s new evil army. Their super creepy and just what the series needs to keep it fresh. Throe and that book love of his are freaking gross AF but it added well to the plot. I love Lassiter! Period! Now all my ranting aside I still love J.R. Ward. I still adore the BDB. I will still read every book The Warden writes, and I will wait impatiently for the next book. But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Warden Please no more cheating or almost cheating!!!!!!
This book was good, but it is mainly a transition book. Not my favorite although was was happy for the characters HEA’s
Sometimes I am blown away by this fictional world. It’s a big fake world to build and let’s be real, these characters are extremely flawed. But when it comes down to it, I just don’t care. I don’t. Bring the pretend chaos and the hot mess express. I love what this world has become and I can’t get enough. It entertains the hell outta me. Okay, maybe not so much with the 47 different plot lines, but it all comes together…eventually. Sure, some books are better than others but again, I am a long time fan and I don’t care where this ride takes us, I’m in it till the end. But hopefully it will never end cause I don’t want it to. It’s my vampire soap opera that I only get to watch once a year. I need my fix!
Love reading JR Ward books
Previous book was more in story and had better in depth characters. This book is good, but not her best in the series, just my opinion. Will always buy her books as they hold my attention, make me fall in lust with heroes and sub character alike. Recommend this book, but – I hate the but – didn’t seem to have the heart and drive of the previous books.
This is my favorite author of this genre.
I love her and wait excitedly for the next book in this series.
Anyone I have recommended her too is on the wait list at our library for the next new book.
Reminds us to keep the love alive in the midst of lifes overwhelming responsibilities.
Hot, steamy! Oh baby, oh baby!! J.R. Ward never disappoints!
I absolutely love J. R. Ward’s Black Brotherhood Series. They are characters that take no grief from anyone, they stand up for what they believe in and keep who they respect and love, safe, protected from evil. I feel like I know them. Wish the brotherhood lived in my neighborhood….vampires or not. I have read her other series and find all of them a good read. Fantastic characters. Great plots and great writing.
I seriously can’t get enough of this series! I have been dying for The Thief to come out since I finished the last page of The Chosen. As excited as I was about Assail and Sola, I really just wanted to get to the bottom of the dilemma between V and Jane, and as usual they didn’t disappoint. Any time spent with Vishous is a good day in my book, but as my favorite Brother, I may be a bit biased. V really took me on an emotional roller coaster this time around, and it’s always so heartbreaking watching him try to come to grips with how he is feeling, and how him and Jane needed to deal with the issues that they had.
I really enjoyed Assail and Sola more than I thought I would. While I always liked them, they weren’t in my omgneedthisbooknow list. I should of known better, the banter between them is great. They are perfect together. Now for the year long wait for the next book….
Reread edit 03/31/19:
I enjoyed The Thief just as much the second time around as I did the first. Maybe even a little more so. The first time I just wanted to get back the V’s storyline, not that I rushed through the rest of the book, but there was an underline of impatience. I didn’t have that feeling this time around so I was able to appreciate Sola and Assail a little more. I really enjoyed not only each character individually, but their journey together. They had so much to overcome. Assail who I always liked, but never really loved, gave me so many reasons to love him that I missed the first time around. Underneath his drug addiction, and arms dealing, Sola made him a male of worth. His utter devotion to Sola was beautiful, as was his love for his cousins, and Vovó.
Finally they are together
