“Dan Simmons writes with the salty grace and precision of Patrick O’Brian. But in piling supernatural nightmare upon historical nightmare, layering mystery upon mystery, he has produced a turbocharged vision of popular doom.” -Men’s Journal Greeted with excited critical praise, this extraordinary novel-inspired by the true story of two ice ships that disappeared in the Arctic Circle during an … 1845 expedition-swells with the heart-stopping suspense and heroic adventure that have won Dan Simmons praise as “a writer who not only makes big promises but keeps them” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). THE TERROR chills readers to the core. “Brutal, relentless, yet oddly uplifting, THE TERROR is a masterfully chilling work.” -Entertainment Weekly “In the hands of a lesser writer than Dan Simmons, THE TERROR might well have dissolved into a series of frigid days and three-dog nights. But Simmons is too good a writer to ignore the real gold in his story-its beleaguered cast.” -Bookpage “Guaranteed to have readers pulling their covers up to their noses, THE TERROR will make for a blood-freezing, bedtime read this winter-and any season thereafter.” -Pages

An amazing book that is by turns brutal, poetic, frightening and lyrical. Despite it’s length (don’t let that scare you) I devoured this one summer in approximately two weeks. It still resonates with me, and is something I plan to go back and read over again. It’s that good!
It brought history alive in a vivid fictionalized tale, effortlessly …
Simmons turns his masterly eye on the ill-fated Franklyn expedition which attempted to find the North-West Passage in the late 1800s, only to fall victim to encroaching ice and eventual cannibalism. In this alternative version, however, the ice-bound crew find themselves confronted with a supernatural terror even more dangerous than the elements. …
A ponderous read. Dan Simmons takes the tragic Franklin expedition to the North Pole, and while staying true to the historical facts, manages to weave in a realistic and terrifying creature that stalks the members who are already weakened by starvation and scurvy. One can almost feel the illness as if it was ones own. It is evident that Simmons …
“The Terror” is a fictionalized account of Captain Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror to the Arctic, in 1845–1848, to locate the Northwest Passage. A true test of humans against the harshest elements on earth.
I love Dan Simmons and this in one of his best. I almost felt cold while reading it.
Interesting plot; I enjoyed the historical basis of the book. I did not particularly Like the ending; a little out there.
Ugh… Don’t know what to say.
I’m a huge fan of Simmons first two Hyperion books. These being the only books of his I’ve read.
So after seeing the tv version of The Terror and loving it, before realising it was based on this book by Simmons, it seemed like a no brainer to be my next read.
I want those two months back.
Yes.. two months. Only …
Like all Simmons books: wordy. The series with Jared Harris is better.
Some say this novel is too long, but if you’re like me and have a high tolerance for suffering and anguish, this is a real page-turner with haunting atmospherics.
One of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors. No one writes a story like Dan Simmons.
You could almost feel the cold while reading this book. Being stuck in the ice with no way to get help would have been terrifying and then to have something stalking you.
Scenes from this book stay with you and you will still wonder long after what actually happened
I’m not a huge fan of historical fiction. While I would love to say that Simmons pulled this off masterly and had me engrossed from the start, I can’t. He did do a great job. And when I finished and researched it a little, I found out that the basis for the story was true fact.
In an attempt to find a north-west passage, Sir John Franklin went on …
Once again Simmons engulfs you in a narrative so believable you can’t put it down but don’t want it to end.
Love this book
Unique
A fascinating read about an historical event woven in with Inupiat mythology and wisdom
Characters were real life. Believable with a twist!
At first I was intimidated by how long the book is, but after a couple of pages was hooked. I got it from the library after seeing the miniseries and having questions about the story and characters. The book is much richer and the eventual end more satisfying than the series was able to capture. The book made me feel like I knew what it was …
Real life history interwoven with supernatural horror, The Terror tells the story of British sailors trapped in the frozen tundra of the North. There they must face multiple perils: starvation, freezing to death, mutiny, and worst of all, the Tuunbaq, a creature of unknown origin that stalks the sailors and dispatches them in gruesome manner. …
