The town party planner has a secret, and it’ll be the death of her.Good thing amateur sleuth, Kay Carrera is on the case!Life at sixty isn’t quite what Kay Carrera expected. She’s working as a skip-tracer for a PI who is desperate to land his own reality TV show. She has a new roommate who arrived with more than the usual amount of baggage. And her attempts at knitting are less than stellar – way … than stellar – way less than stellar. Worse, the cataract surgery that restored her sight has also delivered an unexpected and disturbing side-effect.
Kay sees ghosts. And when the dead turn to her for help, she just can’t say no.

This is a cozy read with a sixty year old as the chair detective. Kay has taken up knitting and that isn’t a good thing….she’s much better with a computer doing skip tracing for her boss. Kay needs more money as she took care of her husband till he died……and she hates sitting in the big house alone. So she gets a cat, Taco, and she ends up renting part of her home to Judge Beck.and his two teens.
Life gets interesting with a judge, teenagers and her new cat……it seems the tiny town had a “madam” doing business. And Kay’s boss has her checking for info on the missing madam……and Kay delivers in more ways than a computer check.
The characters are well done and I felt at home with Kay and her friend Daisy as they sippped wine on the front porch. The judge and his kids add to the mystery and show more of Kay and how she handles life.
The plotting is excellent and enough clues to give you hope that you’ll solve the case before Kay does. Kay is a terrific addition to cozy mysteries and I look forward to reading the next one in the series. A good book to escape into and just enjoy.
I really enjoyed the characters in this book. The main character is a recently widowed 60 year old who works as a skip tracer for a private investigator and bail bondsman. But it ‘s Kay Carrera who does the investigating and solves the mystery. I will read furthe volumes in this series.
Very easy reading
not the usual cozy mystery
After multiple attempts to soften this review, I must admit that I described it as a “page-turner” because I did read it from beginning to end. I struggle to explain why I didn’t just quit after the first few chapter when I found the characters annoying hyper-cliches and the setting and plot implausible. Perhaps I told myself the main characters would grow on me as I learned more about them. But that never happened. Perhaps a surprise ending would knock my socks off and make everything fall into place. No luck there either. The ending was about as predictable as my teenage grandkids’ food preferences.
I’m sure there are some readers out there who will enjoy this book. But although I truly did try to determine who they might be, I failed.
Good story. Light read. Figured the end out but was still entertaining.
Can’t wait to read next is series
This was a great introduction to a wonderful and interesting group of characters with a surprise twist or two. A good read.
It was slow
I enjoyed the book for depth of the characters and the room in the series to growth their back stories. This murder mystery story is easy to read and -spoiler alert- the ghost is hinted now yet fully acknowledged or accepted in book one. Even if you figure out whodunit it’s worth the read. Don’t let the cute cover fool you.
An unusual plot and not the story line I predicted. It was a wonderful read.
A different twist on a mystery heroine. And a fun and thought provoking look at where the line between friendship and interference lies.
Delightful!
Have not finished, but is peeking my interest to finish and find out who done it…
This is a great start to a new series. In fact I read the rest of the series. They are fast paced, engaging plots, and interesting characters. The stories are fast paced without a lot of extraneous word play. I am looking forward to the newest book coming out.
Love it
BUsy life had to put it down several time but glad I went back again
It was light and entertaining
I enjoyed this book. It kept me guessing for the update.
I really enjoyed the main character, who is bravely working at crafting a new life after her husband dies. She is super likable and resilient. I hope the rest of the books will be as much fun!
