The Tea Rose is a towering old-fashioned story, imbued with a modern sensibility, of a family’s destruction, of murder and revenge, of love lost and won again, and of one determined woman’s quest to survive and triumph.East London, 1888-a city apart. A place of shadow and light where thieves, whores, and dreamers mingle, where children play in the cobbled streets by day and a killer stalks at … and a killer stalks at night, where bright hopes meet the darkest truths.
Here, by the whispering waters of the Thames, a bright and defiant young woman dares to dream of a life beyond tumbledown wharves, gaslit alleys, and the grim and crumbling dwellings of the poor.
Fiona Finnegan, a worker in a tea factory, hopes to own a shop one day, together with her lifelong love, Joe Bristow, a costermonger’s son. With nothing but their faith in each other to spur them on, Fiona and Joe struggle, save, and sacrifice to achieve their dreams.
But Fiona’s dreams are shattered when the actions of a dark and brutal man take from her nearly everything-and everyone-she holds dear. Fearing her own death at the dark man’s hands, she is forced to flee London for New York. There, her indomitable spirit-and the ghosts of her past-propel her rise from a modest west side shopfront to the top of Manhattan’s tea trade.
Authentic and moving, Jennifer Donnelly’s The Tea Rose is an unforgettable novel.

Adored this series. By far my favorite to date. Suspense, romance, history, crime and more.
This is a long book but a great read. I really rooted for the characters the whole way along. It was entertaining and steamy.
I absolutely loved this book. I reccomend it a million times over. Extensive vocab as well. Love the way she writes!
This was the first book of Jennifer Donnelly’s I have read! I devoured this series, and have recommended it to MULTIPLE people. (I have since read most of her published works, and am a total fan)! I love her writing, and the way she packs in so much grit, suspense, and love. Fascinating!!
Unforgettable! Stays with you long after you have finished reading the book!
Reminiscent of days gone by on both sides of the Pond.
One of my absolute favorite series!
Great historical fiction.
This is the first of 3 books and the series is the best I have ever read! Could not put them down. A wonderful family saga from the 1800’s till after WWI. Don’t miss them!
A great entertaining saga. Good rags to riches story which is always fun.
At first I thought the story line was something I’ve read before, girl meets boy, they fall in love etc etc. However there were many twists and turns throughout the story that kept me interested. I loved that the heroine, Fiona was a strong woman, never giving up on her dreams. Highly recommend.
On par with Follett’s “Century Trilogy.”
I read this book a while back, but I remember thinking it was a superb book! It is a family saga which I like, and very good! Highly recommend this book!
Loved it.
I started this book and it did not hold my interest.
I enjoyed this book and found it hard to put down. The writing painted a very realistic picture of the hardships of 19th century life of the working poor in England. A rags to riches female heroine, page turning, love story!
