Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother’s mysterious death, he’s lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers. One day, he’s tracked down by an uncle he barely knows—a man his mother claimed was dangerous. Uncle Randolph tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god.The Viking … god.
The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.
When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision.
Sometimes, the only way to start a new life is to die . . .

I have always loved Uncle Rick’s writing. This is one is not any different. Full of action, sass, and a lot of laughs, worrying about characters you instantly love, it is the perfect book for Percy Jackson fans.
Magnus Chase branches out from Greek and Roman mythology into NORSE mythology. As someone who only really knows Norse myths from the Avenger movies and some from Neil Gaiman works, this was at times a jumbled mess of Norse words and Gods that I would never be able to repeat properly and fast paced adventure. I highly recommend reading Hotel Valhalla before this book just to get some of the names and places down to keep the flow of the book up. Other than my failings at knowing most of the mythical characters this was a solid first book in the series and I can’t wait to read the next.
Learning about Norse mythology with the words of Rick Riordan as a guide is always an adventure.
This book was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:-)
Just enough history to keep me entertained.
And now Rick Riordan has dipped into Odin and Thor, etc. and Ragnarok! And WOW! I really, really enjoyed all of the series, even read them three times. Well worth the effort, only because I found something I had missed. Good ol’ Magnus — who’d a thunk it? Love him — and he’s adorable (as well as his cohorts). Riordan’s books “for kids” are getting more and more sophisticated; I guess kids’ reading efforts are getting there as well (?)
i loved the action it displayed in this book
I think I like the Magnus Chase series better than Percy Jackson. It’s pretty much Percy J with Norse gods, a butt-kicking best friend and a fab love interest (who aren’t the same person!). Check it out.
The Magnus Chase series is so much fun to read. If you love fantasy, you’ll definitely adore the Magnus Chase series. I myself enjoy dystopians and fantasy’s. I read the Magnus Chase series months ago and still can’t seem to forget it! I totally recommend The Magnus Chase series that include Magnus Chase and The Sword of Summer, Magnus Chase and The Hammer of Thor, and lastly Magnus Chase and The Ship of the Dead by Rick Riordan. This isn’t a series you can forget!
What a fun read. This is the first book in a series for teens and young adults however I felt it had the possibility of being enjoyed by a wider age group. I am a mature adult and liked it enough that I am going to order the next in the series.
Fans of the early Harry Potter books may find this series a nice addition to their reading list. The characters are well written and the Norse mythology adds an interesting and fun world for them to live in. While there is some violence, it is handled in a way that should not be traumatic for younger readers.
it was awesome!
I always injoy reading Riordan’s books. This one is no different. Funny with sass and interesting characters, it makes it really easy to read through the entire thing in a day or two.
This is an amazing first installment to the Magnus Chase series
This is an amazing book in the magnus chase series rick riordan makes such a good story that captures the imagination and has relatable characters in this mythical story
I really liked this book, one of the best book’s I’ve read.
If you like Norse Mythology then the Magnus Chase series is a great read.
I really enjoyed this book. It had action and adventure, as well as mythology.
Okay, for those of you who don’t know Rick Riordan, he writes books based on different mythologies. The first set, starting with “The Lightning Thief”, was based on Olympic gods. The second, starting with “The Red Pyramid” was based on Egyptian gods. Both of these are good, but this book, which starts the third series, is based on Norse mythology and is near and dear to my heart.
While his books are technically YA, they are written for different levels, with adults getting more out of the books, especially if they are interested in mythology. This book is well written, well researched, and a fun read. Any of Riordan’s books are good, but I especially love this series.
All of Rick Riordan’s books are amazing, and a good read. My favorites are the Magnus Chase series. Read them, you wont be disappointed!
A demigod teenager, a dwarf with fashion sense, a deaf elf, and a middle eastern Valkyrie walk into a bar… Okay, they didn’t walk into a bar until later but they have had some ridiculous adventures while trying to stop Ragnarok from happening. The Magnus Chase series is a spinoff of Rick Riorden’s Percy Jackson series. The difference is that Percy Jackson is embroiled with the Greek gods and Magnus Chase has been pulled into the world of the Norse gods.
I really didn’t care for the narrator for this audiobook. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but I think it’s because he sounds like he’s trying too hard. He voices the teenage main character and females at the same high pitch. He tries to make all the other male characters have deep voices and it comes out exactly like a woman that’s joking around trying to imitate a deep male voice. I had a hard time looking past all that to enjoy the story.
As for the story, all I can say is what the crap?! It is completely absurd and insane which is off-putting but also what keeps you wanting to know what is going to happen next. The world building is the strangest I’ve ever encountered. Weird doesn’t begin to describe it so you will just have to see what I mean for yourself.
I only gave it 3 stars because of the narrator and how it makes fun of and twists the character of the gods. I can see this being very entertaining for young adults but not so much for us stuffy grown-ups Happy reading!
