Which is why, when Saffy—one of the Sinclair Jewels—finds evidence that her family’s missing brooch is in the Sutherland Devil’s possession, she’s certain she’s taking her life into her own hands to reclaim it. She hadn’t planned on being accused of spying and thrown into the dungeons to starve!
Merrick Sutherland is harried from all sides: his alliances are falling apart, his children are adorable monsters, and his illegitimate brother has declared war in an attempt to claim his title. The last thing he needs is a distraction in the form of a lippy little cross-dresser, but that’s what he gets when he drags his new prisoner up from the dungeons. Is she a spy? The best way to learn her secrets is to keep her close, so Merrick makes “Saf” his squire, without revealing what he’s already learned.
Thrust into a sensual game of wits with her new master, Saffy is surprised to learn that what everyone knows about him isn’t quite true. As his squire, she’s in a prime position to search for the missing Sinclair jewels, and she’s willing to go through the very Devil himself to find them.
But will she lose her heart in the process?

(Read in 2020) I really enjoyed this series. I liked the over-arching plot of trying to find the jewels. I loved all the sisters and their matches. Good writing and variety in the relationships between each of the sisters.
I am so enjoying this series and book #3 did not disappoint! This time it’s Sapphire and Merrick’s story and I absolutely loved it. Saffy finds herself on quite an adventure when she disguises herself as a lad, makes her way to the Sutherland clan to try to find one of the missing Sinclair jewels and before she knows it, she’s thrown in the dungeon and then comes face to face with the Sutherland Devil himself!!
Merrick Sutherland has quite the reputation and is feared by all, has buried a few wives, is “Da” to almost a dozen children and oh yes, very handsome:) I loved the humor, the twists and turns, the passion and the action that takes place. Never a dull moment….especially with that many children! lol
A well written story with a heroine that proves her worth and a hero who will do anything to protect those he loves.
Saffy and her sister have decided that in order to save their ailing father, laird of their clan, one of them must find a legendary gem attached to an old tale. This gem just may be somewhere in the keep of the Sutherland Devil, Merrick Sutherland’s home. Saffy must be the one to make the journey, as her sister is the sibling with the talents to protect their parent, but ‘Saf’ is more of an academic rather than a warrior at heart.
Nonetheless, Saf sets off toward her goal, dressed as a lad, intent to keep her true identity a secret, and is unfortunately captured and thrown into a dungeon at the Sutherland keep. It’s here the intrigue begins. Merrick Sutherland is rumored to be a devil, evil to the core, but had she known he was this incredibly attractive, Saf might not feel so bewildered . Merrick isn’t confused, he sees through Saf’s disguise from the start, but needs to know her purpose. Is she a spy? If so, for whom?
This is a terrific story with humor, romance, action, and plenty of heat. I thoroughly enjoyed it and cannot wait for the next in the series.
Sapphire has a mission, she has to find one of the Sinclair jewels. Her and her sisters have traced the jewels to clan Sutherland. Saf has disguised herself as a lad to go to the Sutherland keep to see if she can find anything out about the jewel. Merrick know as the Sutherland Devil finds out that Saf is not a lad but a lass and is trying to find out exactly what she is doing there. Keeping her as his squire has its disadvantages as he is attracted to her and is having a hard time pretending otherwise. Saf is finding out that the Sutherland Devil is not exactly as he has been portrayed. I enjoyed this story very much! I thought Saf was going to be a meek one but she proved me wrong. She was feisty and humorous. And what can I say about Merrick Sutherland, wow, swoon worthy comes to mind! This is a great read and I definitely recommend this book.
“Ye’re awake then?” The voice a low rumble came from across the room and Saffy’s eyes flew open. When she saw the strange man, she sucked in her breath.
Dear God, the man was beautiful.
Dark hair with flashes of silver which matched the stubble on his cheeks, and his eyes…a blue so pale it ooked like ice, but surrounded by a dark ring. (paraphrased but you get the picture!)
Thus began the journey of Laird Merrick, the Sutherland Devil and Sapphire Sinclair who was one of the Jewels or daughters of Laird Sinclair. Dressed as a lad Saffy determined she needed to sneak into the Sinclair holding and find the next clue in the search for the Sinclair jewels, which once found would bring good fortune to the clan.
Caught, thought to be a spy ob Merrick’s brother John, who wanted his title and lands, he figured out quickly she was no lad. But he would treat her as one and make her his squire who would be with him constantly. To find out all her secrets..
Intrigued yet? Well…… you should be because this captured me right from the start! A scholarly lass but deteremined and a misunderstood man who was a warrior, oh yes, find there is an attraction that cannot be denied. Adventure, great characters, humor, especially with the children make this a story to read straight through until the end. Loved it!
