Wonderful book! Keep going!! I couldn’t put it down!! Keep making more books!!
Sigh.
I feel like I am always the voice of dissent but here goes…
First of all, I was annoyed because as an adoptive mother I felt the author didn’t adequately research international adoption. She says that the couple looked into it because that was the best way to get a newborn. This couldn’t be more wrong. It takes much, much longer to finalize foreign adoptions and therefore the babies are never newborns. Our daughter was 19 months when she arrived from New Delhi and we were referred to her when she was 7 weeks old. She has them eagerly pursuing this route but then being concerned about the cost of surrogacy; international adoption is BY FAR more expensive. Ours was $27,000 seventeen years ago. A surrogate would’ve been $7,000-$9,000 at that time, plus some expenses.. It just felt poorly researched and I almost DNFed it after the first chapter.
All of the characters are tough to like, the plot is crazy, no one just talks to one another the way people just talk to each other in real life and it eventually veers from crazy into completely unrealistic. It did deliver some surprises and some of them were quite clever but it wasn’t enough to reel me back in.
The Surrogate is a thrilling story about a desire to be a mother even with infertility struggles. I was on the edge of my seat until the very end. It’s unexpected, mysterious, and engaging.
I started reading and assumed the story was going to be a about a woman’s journey to motherhood using surrogacy. As it turns out, it was that and so much more. Kat has been through so many tough times. She is trying to have a baby with her husband Nick but has suffered miscarriages. When she runs into her friend from her past, Lisa, she is introduced to the world of having a child through a surrogate. Lisa details how she has been a surrogate previously and only piques Kat’s interest even more.
She approaches her husband with this idea and they agree. It is then that we get to see the revelation of old secrets. Kat and Lisa have so many shared memories that they wish they could forget, but they seem to be right on the mind with this new pregnancy.
I couldn’t believe the ending and how Louise Jensen brought all of the character’s backstories together. It was genius!
I give The Surrogate 4 stars. It is a thriller that has a great plot and will keep readers on their toes. The lead up to the ending was done so well. The cryptic signs during the novel made so much sense by the end and left me satisfied with the story. The Surrogate Louise Jensen
Kat desperately wants to be a mother. But she and her husband, Nick, have tried unsuccessfully to become parents and Nick is ready to give up. Then Kat encounters her best friend from childhood, Lisa. The meeting appears to be happenstance. But is it? Despite their shared history that left the two of them estranged for many years, Lisa offers to serve as a surrogate for Kat and Nick.
At the outset, readers must suspend disbelief in order to accept that Lisa and Kat would enter into such an arrangement sans reconciliation of the dark history they share. After all, whatever happened all those years ago pulled them apart for many years and, under normal circumstances, the two would not just rekindle a friendship — much less enter into a surrogacy arrangement — without reconciliation. However, there is nothing normal about the characters author Louise Jensen creates or the world they inhabit.
Jensen navigates readers through jaw-dropping revelations about the characters’ pasts, their motivations, and what is really happening as opposed to what appears to be occurring. Every character is far more complex and, in some instances, sinister than they seem. And as Kat realizes that Lisa has misrepresented her current circumstances, actions, and motivations, she is forced to finally confront her fears about past events and how those fears can the power to impact her future. She muses, “You know that feeling? When you want something so badly, you almost feel you’d kill for it?” Lisa tells her several times, “We always get what we deserve.” Jensen demonstrates through fast-paced plot twists and unpredictable character developments that nothing has occurred randomly. The quest to learn whether all of Jensen’s characters indeed get what they deserve compels readers to suspend disbelief and keep reading. The Surrogate is thoroughly escapist entertainment.

A One night read!
Interesting plot
Loved the twists and turns of this book. The last little bit was over the top,but I really didn’t like the last page.
Unpredictable till the very end.
This book was very unpredictable the main female didn’t seem to be very with it .She was so tired up in wanting a baby she didn’t see what was going on .The husband had lots of secrets. I didn’t like that this book still left you wondering what happened !
Kind of cliche and predictable …
