The New York Times bestselling author of Falling presents a warm, wise, and wonderfully vivid novel about a mother who asks her three estranged daughters to come home to help her end her life.
Ronni Sunshine left London for Hollywood to become a beautiful, charismatic star of the silver screen. But at home, she was a narcissistic, disinterested mother who alienated her three daughters.
As soon as possible, tomboy Nell fled her mother’s overbearing presence to work on a farm and find her own way in the world as a single mother. The target of her mother’s criticism, Meredith never felt good enough, thin enough, pretty enough. Her life took her to London—and into the arms of a man whom she may not even love. And Lizzy, the youngest, more like Ronni than any of them, seemed to have it easy, using her drive and ambition to build a culinary career to rival her mother’s fame, while her marriage crumbled around her.
But now the Sunshine sisters are together again, called home by Ronni, who has learned that she has a serious disease and needs her daughters to fulfill her final wishes. And though Nell, Meredith, and Lizzy have never been close, their mother’s illness draws them together to confront the old jealousies and secret fears that have threatened to tear these sisters apart. As they face the loss of their mother, they will discover if blood might be thicker than water after all…

The relationships between the three sisters, and each of them with their egocentric movie star mother were very realistic at the same time creating an unusual dynamic within their very different childhood experiences. This created an intriguing storyline with unexpected plot twists. Jane Green really has great insight into nuances of human motivation and realistic exchanges between characters. Complex and heartfelt…a wonderful story.
Jane Green always delivers on a great read. Her characters are interesting, well developed and realistic. I thoroughly enjoy reading her novels and am sorry to have them end!
I enjoyed the general story line but there are some twists that I don’t necessarily enjoy reading about. i liked the relationships of the sisters and how their relationship ends up.
I didn’t expect to like this as much as much as I did. Though the mother character is not warm and loving, you come to understand her motivation and that of her daughters. An unexpectedly good read!
Jane Green is one of my favorite authors.
The characters behaved very realistically considering the situation. Hadn’t read Jane Green before but I will again.
No plot. Seemed that author was practicing writing descriptively and saying nothing.
What a nice surprise, I totally enjoyed this
By turns funny and poignant, The Sunshine Sisters gets to the heart of the complicated family relationships that give shape to our lives. Reading this story was as effortless as sharing a cup of tea with a friend. Jane Green kept me turning the pages, waiting to see whether and how the family would work things out. It’s a perfect book for the beach or for curling up next to the fire.
It was interesting to read how different the 3 sisters turned out!
Very good bookaboutatimely topic. Started a little slow but got better
Great read, keeps you interested throughout the book. Great beach read even in the winter
Whether you have a sister or not, The Sunshine Sisters is my definition of the perfect beach read.
Excellent
The sunshine sisters by Jane Green
Have read other books by the author and have enjoyed them.
This one is about 3 sisters and their mother who’s sick. Starts at present day then goes back to 1970’s then 2000 then back again.
To me it’s so mixed up and hard to keep track of who os who. There are three sisters and the best part for me is when they are summoned home from their jobs and family.
Their mother is very ill and she tells them a secret she’s held close for a long time.
The sisters are once again together, something that’s not happened since they were young.
Good story and I’ve though of doing same thing, my husband and myself if our circumstances get to that point. It’s legal in OR already.
Wish each of the sisters had gotten their own book because I like to get to know my characters.
Liked mixture of careers and relationships but I couldn’t tell you who was who at any given point.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
When listening to audiobooks, I tend to lean towards books read by the author, as the author is able to provide the inflection in their voice in the pivotal moments in the story since they wrote it. This book offers just that. Author Jane Green has such pleasant voice to listen to. A great book about the importance of family and the need to be true to each other.
I loved this story!
