Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New … meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

”Beautifully crafted.”–People Magazine
“A book that is very much about the many factors that affect falling in love, as much as it is about the very act itself . . . fans of Yoon’s first novel, Everything Everything, will find much to love—if not, more—in what is easily an even stronger follow up.” —Entertainment Weekly
”Transcends the limits of YA as a human story about falling in love and seeking out our futures.” —POPSUGAR.com

Great for teens and adults, alike!
This story is a one-day-life. All can chance in only 24 hours. The life of two guys is going to change in a wonderful novel.
I can’t wait to watch the movie. I loved this book, I did cry.
This is a inspirational, entertaining, fun, and romantic book that sweeps you right up along with the characters!
This book hurts.

was my favorite romance book the moment it got released. the most easy to read romance book I had the pleasure to read.
the book is an amazingly narrated story; with a touching message. it showed me that its so easy to loose those we cherish .
I liked the fact that Nicola Yoon, gave us the opportunity to experience various point of views which gave the book one of its unique features. however, the story was a bit too fast in my opinion.
This novel is truly an inspiration for youth all around the world. It encourages me in an amazing way
It is a good book and i would recommend it to people and this book is very intersting ,it will teach you things that you may not know also somethings in this book will help you out in the future with your life .
Talks about going after what you really want, what your heart desires. Dreams are never too big, go after them. Words matter, even when you think nobody is listening; actions too. Things happen because of action-reaction but every action has a purpose bigger than their reaction. Fait exist and is based on casualties and coincidences. Feel, with every inch of your body and heart, feel and let people know how you feel.
It’s not only literature but it teaches you something.
SO good. The main character is enamored with science and throws that knowledge around all over the place. I love that in a good romance that’s doomed from the start.
Korean immigrant Daniel, a hopeless romantic, and Jamaican immigrant Natasha, a hard core scientist, meet by chance as each rushes to a meeting that could change their lives. As they spend the day together, we are given a bird’s eye view of their lives and families. As I read, I often forgot that they were teens. I came to care for, them, their families, and those they interacted with. Narration chapters from the POV of others added an interesting twist.

I loved the movie I cried … alot
It was definitely something else in a good way and very realistic
Unpretentious and incredibly perceptive. In ‘The Sun is also a Star’, Nicola Yoon perfectly captures the singular struggles, compromises, and shifting loyalties of the real-life immigrant experience in contemporary America. Set in New York, this is an epic love story that is captured in the frame of just one short day between Natasha, a beautiful Jamaican-born illegal resident of the United States, and Daniel, a second generation Korean American. Their unexpected meeting, the unlikely connections, and synchronicities, that occur from the out-set, draw the reader into their love story hook, line and sinker.
Yoon’s writing is bold, authentic, and draws on deep emotional, almost poetic roots. I loved every moment of reading this book. The author’s writing voice is both a breath of fresh air, and highly creative, both technically and stylistically. She manages to pull off an amazing blend of scientific determinism intertwined with the everyday processes of real life. Echos of the Shakespearean star-crossed lovers ring strong.
I loved hearing about all of the ordinary lives that contribute, often behind the scenes, to our understanding of who we are in a truly holistic light. What are the odds of meeting ‘the one’, the love of your life in the most ordinary of ways, on the most ordinary of days? On second thoughts, isn’t that how it always works, boy meets girl, without all the embellishments we add on later?
Stories of hope in love, stories which challenge the cynic in us all to allow for the magical whims of fate or chance to do their thing leave you with a warm feeling, a feeling that there’s really more good going on than bad in this world if only we’d take the time to really look. Yoon’s ‘The Sun is also a Star’ is a beautifully crafted, funny, exceptionally lovely 5 star read!
a new favorite! great love story while also tackling important issues!
I got all the feels while reading this book and it was beyond cute. My heart seriously melted as a chance encounter turns into Daniel and Natasha falling in love. They truly got to know one another and the chemistry was so magnetic. I loved how they were both complete opposites with different views of the world and how it works. But somehow they connected on a level neither of them could explain.
I really fell in love with Natasha and Daniel. Even though this book takes place in a day, I really felt like I knew both of these characters. Despite their Jamaican and Korean heritage, they were uniquely their own person and I truly loved that. They both have their own issues, but those things fade into the background as they spend time getting to know one another.
Nicola Yoon does a fantastic job touches on certain stereotypes for black people and Koreans. It also sheds a light on immigration and deportation. The family dynamic was one I thought was very interesting and deep because our families values and dreams for us can weigh a person down and we see that with Daniel and even with Natasha.
There are just too many things to love about this book. It was so cute and just a joy to read. It had me smiling and feeling giddy with promise and hope. Nicola Yoon’s writing is transcendent and magical. I fell head over heels for this one.
This story proves to be very realistic but it also proves a realist wrong. I loved how Daniel managed to change Natasha’s mind about romance when she seemed to live in the world of science.
Wow. Wow wow wow wow wow. I don’t even know where to start with this review. This novel touched my heart in a way I can’t even describe. Have you ever read a book that feels like it was written just for you? Like the author peered inside your thoughts and constructed a novel around them?? Because that’s what it was like reading Yoon’s words. I’m completely blown away. Buckle in kids, I think this is gonna be a long one. I’VE GOT SOME THINGS TO SAY.
Even though I’ve never read her other novel Everything, Everything I did go and see the movie and I was… well, um… underwhelmed. I have no idea what the book is like, but the movie was sappy, predictable, and boring to be completely honest. It turned me off and I had no desire to read any of her books. Cut to me this week, needing something new and feeling like a contemporary. I had been seeing movie trailers for The Sun Is Also a Star all week and my interest was peaked enough to take a chance. So I did, completely unprepared for the emotional rollercoaster this was going to take me on.
At the heart of this story is a cute and adorable romance. Natasha is a very strong, but cynical teen who I related to almost immediately. Daniel has an artist’s soul and an amazing sense of humor. Together their romance only spans one day, which normally would make my eyes roll, but it seemed strangely believable in this book somehow. Honestly though, the romance isn’t why I love this so much. More than anything this story is about people. The people we don’t notice, the people who change our lives, the people we change without even realizing it. It’s about how we’re all connected, even in the smallest ways and it was so beautiful to read about.
And Listen. I am very white, so I won’t pretend to completely relate with Daniel and Natasha’s struggles with their immigrant heritage. The way Yoon wrote about it though, was amazing. I love love LOVE that she’s writing about this issue and making it so accessible to teens who will soon be building our future. Now more than ever we should be tearing down walls instead of building them and I think this book does an excellent job of reminding everyone of the people these issues affect. Even though we all come from different backgrounds, we can still relate the pain of another person.
I may not have an ethnic background, but similar to Natasha, I have a strenuous relationship with my father and I can’t tell you what it was like to read about that from her perspective. I’ve never been able to articulate my feelings about it well, but Yoon captures those emotions PERFECTLY. It was such a tremendous relief to see it written down on paper. To know that someone out there feels the same way and I can’t thank Yoon enough for that.
↬ FINAL WORD
If you’re like me, you see this book is about a romance that takes place in a day and roll your eyes. But I’m telling you. I’m TELLING YOU. It’s so much more. Read it.
So, the funny thing is I had just finished telling someone that I didn’t often like books where the narrator switches quickly. I like to spend time with a character before we get another point of view.
What I realized after I read The Sun is Also a Star is that I DO like books where this is done – if it’s done well.
There were a few too many coincidences for me to give this five stars, but don’t let that deter you. It was a great book.
I really enjoyed this book; great characters, witty, and well written.
