True love requires commitment, and many times unending sacrifice. . . At the tender age of eighteen, Brandi Vargas watched the love of her life drive out of Emerson Pass, presumably for good. Though she and Trapper Barnes dreamed of attending college and starting their lives together, she was sure she would only get in the way of Trapper’s future as a hockey star. Breaking his heart, and her own … and her own in the process, was the only way to ensure he pursued his destiny. Her fate was the small town life she’d always known, her own bakery, and an endless stream of regret.
After a decade of playing hockey, a single injury ended Trapper Barnes’ career. And while the past he left behind always haunted him, he still returns to Emerson Pass to start the next chapter of his life in the place his ancestors built more than a century before. But when he discovers that the woman who owns the local bakery is the girl who once shattered his dreams, the painful secret she’s been harboring all these years threatens to turn Trapper’s idyllic small town future into a disaster. Will it take a forest fire threatening the mountain village to force Trapper and Brandi to confront their history? And in the wake of such a significant loss, will the process of rebuilding their beloved town help them find each other, and true happiness, once again?
Fast forward to the present day and enjoy this contemporary second chance romance set in the small town of Emerson Pass, featuring the descendants of the characters you loved from USA Today bestselling author Tess Thompson’s The School Mistress.

It was a very quick read. Really enjoyed how it is written. Since reading I’ve attached the author to my “read more” list
I enjoyed this book! I haven’t read this author before, but this was a great book, and I will certainly be reading her books again!
It is Nicely written and enjoyable
Sweet story, but Tess Thompson’s Blue Mountain series is my favorite. If you like romance and mystery intertwined I highly recommend reading all of them.
Awesome book. Awesome writer
I enjoyed this book. I’d recommend it.
A sweet story including heartbreak and misunderstandings when a young Brandi and Trapper part ways due to his dream of becoming a professional hockey player and years later his returning to their hometown due to injuries ending his career. Trapper still in love with Brandi wants to rekindle their relationship even when extenuating and tragic circumstances force them to face before they are able to mend their relationship and find happiness.
Young love enduring the test of time and maturing into a lasting love that neither could deny.
Wow! What a wonderful story! A tough situation handled excellently!
The only reason I gave it three stars is the author included several pages of a journal written by a great great grandmother. I found the journal boring and wished she would stick to the modern romance.
i have been reading these books in this series have enjoyed all of them
I really liked this book.
Loved this book!!!!! Such a great author and I would have given it a lot more than 5 stars if I could!!!!!
I couldn’t put this book down. It was such a good story and so easy to read. I highly recommend it!!!
I love Tess Thompson books!
Was so good stayed up all day reading it after working all night.
I loved the charactets and felt like a lost good friends when i finished the book. Can’t wait to read the other books in the series
I read this fun story after just finishing a heavy historical fiction book. This does address a still born birth but the author presents it delicately. The author brings to light how important family and friends bond is the success to happiness.
A remarkable story.
I would give this book by Tess Thompson more than five if it were an option. It is a contemporary book about the descendents of the Barnes and other families of Emerson Pass. I love the way Ms Thompson uses double first person in all of these reads. She is genius in combining the contemporary characters with information from letters and journals from the historical Emerson Pass with so much rich history.
Complications for the contemporary characters are generation of dysfunctional families.
Ms Thompson did write a great romance with ups and downs.
I would absolutely recommend this book as a companion to the historical fiction.
Tess Thompson’s The Sugar Queen was a very quick read. Though there was a 10 year break in Brandi and Trapper’s relationship a fire, lies and family drama hasten the relationship along. Would recommend this book.
