Welcome to Sugar Maple . . . Sugar Maple may look like your postcard-perfect Vermont town but that’s where the similarity ends. Our librarian is a beautiful Norwegian troll. The funeral parlor is run by a family of vampires. The Sugar Maple Inn is owned by Fae while the werewolves keep our hardware store well-stocked. For centuries we have been home to house sprites, witches, selkies, spirits, … selkies, spirits, shapeshifters, and elves.
I’m Chloe Hobbs, the half-human/half-magick owner of Sticks & String, the most popular knit shop in New England, where your yarn never tangles, you always get gauge, and the knitter sitting next to you only comes out after dark. And did I mention that I’m almost thirty, single, and with no prospects in sight? My friends and neighbors have been casting spells to help me find Mr. Right but so far their efforts have been all wrong.
Who’d have guessed I’d find my soulmate in Luke MacKenzie, a cop investigating Sugar Maple’s very first murder? Bad news is he’s 100% human which could spell disaster for a normal future with a paranormal woman like me–in love, in danger, and in way over my head.
Casting Spells – Chloe falls in love and comes into her magick but can she trust the very human Luke MacKenzie to keep her secret?
Laced with Magic – Chloe and Luke are determined to make their unlikely romance blossom but when Luke’s ex-wife shows up in town on a desperate mission to save their daughter’s soul, they find themselves in the fight of their lives.
Spun by Sorcery – Sugar Maple has gone missing and Chloe travels to Salem where she battles the forces of evil to fulfill her destiny and save her beloved town from the clutches of a powerful Fae warrior.
Charmed – Chloe has a secret that will change Sugar Maple forever.
Spells & Stitches – Baby Laria is six pounds, eleven ounces of perfect, and Chloe and Luke are over the moon. But when they learn that Laria takes after her mom in the sorcery department, it becomes clear that their baby might have more power than even a pro like Chloe can handle…

Bretton launches her new series of magic and murder with an enchanting, lyrical masterpiece that should make its way to the bestseller list in no time. With vibrant, multidimensional characters, including the town itself, Bretton pens a memorable romance that combines knitting, love, magic, and self-discovery.
Publishers Weekly
Tongue-in-cheek humor lifts this weird but fun hybrid, part knitting cozy, part paranormal romance, from romance veteran Bretton (Just Desserts). After a classy female tourist drowns mysteriously in an icy lake in remote Sugar Maple, Vt., the Montpelier authorities ask Boston homicide cop Luke MacKenzie to investigate. As Sugar Maple’s temporary police chief, Luke soon notices the village’s odd ambience. Originally a haven for witches who fled the Salem witchcraft trials three centuries earlier, Sugar Maple is now home to witches, vampires, fairies and trolls. Luke is also attracted to Chloe Hobbs, the half-human owner of the knitting shop Sticks & Strings, who must find Mr. Right if she’s to preserve the spell that sustains the town’s unusual residents. As sparks literally fly between the two, Chloe’s “magickal” side stirs into life. Bretton charmingly depicts how love empowers Chloe and awakens Luke to some major surprises.
An imaginative and charming tale. –Shelley Mosley, Booklist (STARRED REVIEW)

I really enjoyed the majority of this series because it was so much fun to read. The characters are delightful and entertaining. I laughed a lot.
The Sugar Maple Chronicles is a fun series full of magic and mayhem. Each story is a continuation so the series really should be read in order. You may read my reviews of each book in the series separately here on Goodreads and on other review platforms.
Chloe Hobbs is part human/part witch and the descendant of a very powerful sorceress. She falls in love with a human and here is where the series begins. Each book is extremely well written. The plot is smooth and flows evenly and there is humor and conflict. The characters are well developed and enjoyable. I highly recommend Sugar Maple Chronicles to lovers of the paranormal with romance humor, and suspense.
I own the originally published paperbacks of each book in the series as well as the ebook collection.
I love this series, I’ve missed it so I read it quckly. It’s a town or paranormals, cloaked by magic that relies on tourists and has a magical knit shop that draws knitters from far and wide. It’s different from other paranormal town mysteries because of it’s characters and it is amazingly fun. The recent co-mingling of human and paranormal is front and center in this book. I prefer reading from the first book but you can still have a good read if you read it out of order. I don’t tell the stories, that’s what reading is for. But if you like paranormal mysteries with a touch or romance, I think you’ll love this.
Excellent character development, people who seemed realistic rather than perfect people. Solid plots. Funny
Really great characters. Real love story that they have to work at. Very funny situations with quirky townspeople.
I really enjoyed this series and immediately searched for more in the series.
I had the hardest time getting into this book. I felt the writing was good but the story line sort of wandered around and things happened for no apparent reason. I started and stopped it several times.
Love love love this series
I’ve only read this first book but I enjoyed it very much. Like the historical referances.
I have loved all the books in this series
I have always loved fantasy with magical, fun and witty characters. This book delivers. Yeah!
Very creative
I read 4-5 books in a row. Got a bit bored towards the end, but still enjoyable. Nice change from what I normally read.
I enjoyed this book a lot. The characters were awesome and I couldn’t put it down. I definitely recommend this book!
I am in the process of reading the second story and am looking forward to reading the rest of them
Loved this series. Wonderful story, surprising at every turn. Couldn’t put them down.
I thoroughly enjoyed the series and will be buying the rest. A very different take
on the paranormal genre. I must say though, that I like anything this author writes.
I’m actually still reading the book, the series actually. I’ve found it to be entertaining so far.
I throughly enjoyed all four books. There are delightful knitting anecdotes between the stories. This is just fun to read.
Good story line, witty and fast paced. Would be improved by better proof-reading.
