But if you have time for just one, check out his bestselling new release—great story, great characters, and the kind of quality you’d come to expect from Mickey. Five stars.
A steamy, sports romance that will have you laughing and fanning yourself!
Love it! Awesome read! Grab this one. Another great one!
A great romance that makes you smile. Peyton and Maddy reach out and touch your heart. Their back story, and present time together makes your remember your high school crush. I was drawn into their story from the first chapter, and I couldn’t put it down. I just couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. I was happy and sad when I reached the end. I enjoyed Peyton and Maddy’s happy ever after, but I was so sad to come to the end of my time with them.
Peyton O’Rourke, hometown boy turned Super Bowl superstar, comes back to town to teach and coach the high school football team while the NFL is on strike. While staying with his ailing grandmother, he runs into his neighbor, Maddy Cooper. They were friends during school themselves and are now both teaching at their alma matter.
Maddy fights her attraction to Peyton, both because he was her boyfriend’s best friend, and because she doesn’t want to endanger her job. Also, her parents do not like him and don’t want Maddy spending time with him. However, the more time they spend together, one thing leads to another, and they, of course, get together.
I’m not personally a fan of the alpha male (or alpha female) characters and so am not a huge Peyton fan. But this is still a great read and I’m sure that if you’re a fan of those types of characters and/or a fan of Mickey Miller’s writing, you’ll love this book.
This was a super cute, sweetly hot book with great dialogue!!
Peyton O’Rourke football player at the highest level heads home to his tiny hometown during a pro-strike.
Maddy Cooper… the girl who he had the biggest crush on in high school is back living with her parents after her long time boyfriend Eric (Peyton’s best friend in high school) left her to “find himself”.
I loved this story. I did not care for Eric!!
Great plot, awesome character development, perfect dialogue!!!
I highly recommend. No trigger, cliffhanger, and HEA
Mickey Miller
Wow…Mickey kicked this one out of the stadium! You will experience the heroine grow into the strong woman she ends up being. The hero is a fun loving jokester. Together they overcome their troubles and turn into an amazing couple.
When the NFL goes on strike, Peyton O’Rourke heads back to his hometown to fill in as a substitute for the Spanish teacher as well as coach the high school football team. What he wasn’t counting on was the girl he’s always wanted more with being single.
Maddy Cooper has only had one serious relationship in her life . . . and he just happens to be Peyton’s best friend from high school. But, her attraction to Peyton burns stronger and stronger and for once in her life, Maddy wants to do what she wants, rather than what everyone wants her to do . . . and what she wants to do is Peyton!
I really loved this book. While Peyton definitely comes off as the bad boy athlete, he really does have a heart of gold . . .especially where Maddy Cooper is concerned. Peyton covers his true feelings for Maddy with flirting and flip comments, but he’s had feelings for her since he was a teenager.
Maddy wants to live for herself, but she’s so used to pleasing everyone she isn’t sure what to feel or believe. Can she live in the now and give in to her feelings or will she play it safe as she always has and let her chance with Peyton slip away. And, what happens when the strike is over?
Super fun, flirty, sexy and sweet all rolled into one, the Substitute was an extremely entertaining read and definitely one of Mickey Miller’s best books to date. 5 stars.
What an addictive read!!! I couldn’t put the book down until I had finished the last page, and now I’m sad I had to say good-bye to Peyton and Maddy!!!
Peyton and Maddy were neighbors when they were teenagers, and Maddy was the girlfriend of Peyton’s friend, Eric. Peyton left their small town and didn’t look back. He was a Super Bowl Champion. Maddy stayed and became an elementary school teacher. Years later, Peyton returns. The NFL is on strike, and he comes home as a substitute teacher and high school football coach. Maddy is adjusting to single life since Eric broke up with her to travel. Now, he has moved back in with his grandmother who has Alzheimer’s. Once these two lay eyes on each other again, the sparks FLY!!!!!
I fell in love with the characters and the storyline! Peyton was so much more than I first thought he was. He was self-confident and somewhat cocky, with a hilarious sense of humor. Underneath that sexy exterior, was a somewhat vulnerable man who was afraid to get his heart broken by the woman who held it in the palm of her hands.
“He was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He could charm the pants off almost anyone when he wanted to, but those who knew the background on his upbringing, like I did, knew he hid shades of darkness behind his smile.”
Maddy was the “girl next door.” She was sweet, loyal, and loving. But, like Peyton, she was complex and had more layers than I thought she did. Underneath that wholesome exterior was a woman who was passionate but yet didn’t feel comfortable sharing that side with anyone.
The storyline just like the characters were complex and multi-layered. The steamy romance between Peyton and Maddy was a big part of the book, but there was another story taking place at the same time. Maddy was a woman who was trying to find her own independence and direction in her own life. She found herself at a crossroads, did she choose security or take a chance on the unknown. Peyton was what she needed to test the waters. He was there for her just like she was there for him when he was a teenager. Peyton was also in unchartered territory. He had never had the feelings for anyone that he was developing for Maddy. At first, he tried to get her out of his mind. Then, he tried to be satisfied with their “no strings” relationship, but he kept finding himself wanting it all with Maddy.
“Trying to keep her out of my mind only etched her deeper onto my soul.”
The book was well-written, and I loved how Miller ended the chapters, giving me a bit of foreshadowing of what was to come. I have not had the opportunity to read Miller before. I’m so glad I’ve discovered this talented writer. He knows how to writer with the perfect balance of steam and romance that gives you “all the feels.” He was able to blend humor, steam, and romance flawlessly to give me another top read of 2019.
4.5 Substitute Stars
Maddy is ready for the school year to kick off! She has one of the nicest classrooms overlooking the football field and she’s ready for anything That is until she realises that there is a substitute and he’s taking her classroom…it gets worse, she knows him well…..Super Bowl Champion Peyton!
Peyton and Maddy get off to a bad start but finally settle into a rhythm as the school year passes. Unfortunately, their chemistry and attraction is through the roof and neither want to act on it because Maddy is getting over her ex, Eric, and Eric and Peyton were BFFs in High School! If they cross the line, can they remain friends or will they want more?
A great storyline! I didn’t always like Maddy because I thought she was a bit wishy washy with her feelings and not expressing herself, but she eventually grew on me Loved Peyton, he was the proverbial bad boy with an inner good boy
I loved this story! Big-time football quarterback, Peyton O’Rourke, returns to his small hometown during the NFL strike. He takes a job as the substitute Spanish teacher and high school football coach. And,after all this time away, has reawakened feelings for his cute, newly single next door neighbor Maddy Cooper. Despite taking care of his grandmother with Alzheimer’s and the end of the strike looming over them, Peyton and Maddy begin a rekindling of their high school friendship, but with added “benefits” on the side. But, what Peyton feels for Maddy is more than what she seems willing to give. Can Maddy figure out what she really wants before losing Peyton for good? Or will treating him as her dirty little secret push him away forever? Definitely one-click this book to see if Maddy is able search within for what will really make her happy and if she can truly see Peyton for the man he has always been!
Holy high school football, Mickey Miller has done it again! When the NFL goes on strike, Super Bowl star, Peyton O’Rourke returns to his small home town of Pentwater, MI, to fill in as the substitute Spanish teacher and high school football coach. He left town after his senior year, never looking back, but being home stirs up a lot of memories — not the least of which is his neighbor Maddy, who was joined at the hip with Payton’s best friend Eric all those years ago. Maddy is now all grown up and teaches third grade at the K-12 school, and did I mention she and Eric are no longer dating? Doesn’t that open up all kinds of delicious possibilities.
Miller’s books are just so darn fun to read, and with each new book, I think, “This is his best book,” because he continues to grow in his craft while still showcasing a terrific sense of humor. I adored Peyton and Maddy and was cheering for them throughout, easily devouring their story in one sitting. Of course, I wanted to shake them both a time or two, but what’s a romance without a little conflict? I love when characters are realistically complex because peeling back the layers makes a stronger connection with the reader. Peyton acts all cocky and arrogant, seeming to never take anything seriously, but it’s the little boy with the tough upbringing and the gigantic heart beneath it all that won me over. Maddy has lived her life being good, nice and agreeable, and it was delightful to see a carefree but strong person emerge and go after what she wanted.
I loved seeing Miller show a deeper side with the parallel between Maddy and Payton’s grandmother which finally helped Maddy fully understand the cost of “settling for.” That’s actually a great lesson for all of us. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Miller novel without sexy times, and the chemistry between Peyton and Maddy was explosive, with just the right amount of tension and teasing, and a little bit of taboo added in. This one is fun and flirty, humorous and hot, messy at times but with a poignant tenderness that hits all the right notes, and you’re definitely going to want to start reading it right away!

Peyton never expected to be back in his hometown as a substitute teacher, but with the NFL on strike he has no choice. What he didn’t count on was Maddy, a teacher, newly single. As the strike goes on, these two get closer and it’s oh so delicious. I loved this book. This book has so much tension, you can literally cut it with a knife. I definitely recommend this book to everyone.
What do you do when the pro football player next door is mowing shirtless-stare, of course! What was Peyton doing back here in this small Michigan town, next door, he should be playing football across the country, not making me think naughty ideas! Maddy lived next door to Peyton’s grandmother and knew him before he hit big time, after all she dated his best friend since high school but there he is, here in front of you looking too good! Maddy is ready to start a new school year, she’s ready got her classroom ready to roll, early even, but wrench was thrown into her life, a very large, sexy football player sized one. While the league is on strike Peyton decided to spend time with is grandmother, falling into a job as a substitute teacher and the high school football coach. The girl was his best friend’s but now she’s single and in town, does he step over the bro code? Fun read with witty banter and good flow and steaminess all in all really good entertaining read!

this is a fast pace read that will have your heart on a fast pace beat tell the very end. this is a amazing read that will have you hooked tell the very end.
The dynamics and chemistry between Peyton and Maddy was amazing. So swoon worthy and captivating like only Mickey knows how. Couldn’t wait for the next page. This book definitely kept me up reading too late.
Peyton is such a cocky guy, but that totally fits his character. Maddy I think just needed to get out of her own head about all of the crap in her past. I also loved his cute nicknames for her.
I really just loved everything about this book, the drama, the sparks, and the characters, but most of all it’s just a great story.
This is one substitute you’ll love!!
You shouldn’t want your ex-boyfriend’s best friend, right? And why would an NFL star want the boring girl next door? And why should the girl next door want the substitute who has caused her to be moved to ‘The Pit’? I will admit, I kinda was feeling some strong dislike for Peyton in the beginning of the book. Maddy wasn’t too thrilled with him either. Despite their past friendship, she was feeling quite a bit disgruntled and discombobulated by Peyton. I loved his ‘redemption’ as the book went on. He’s cocky, confident, honest, and sexy as all get out. Maddy has stayed in their hometown because of her now ex-boyfriend. Except he didn’t stay because he felt a need to find himself. He seems like quite a selfish jerk, actually. I FLOVED it!!! And Maddy is sweet, caring, fiesty, and learns to find her own voice despite having been the good girl all these years. Another fantastic, steamy, sweet read!! I received an advance copy. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
