The New York Times and USA Today bestselling first book in The Wedding Pact series by Denise Grover Swank.
Megan Vandemeer meant to tell her parents about her broken engagement, but a month and a half later she finds herself boarding a plane home to her wedding. Having stretched avoidance to its limits, it’s time to come clean–a terrifying prospect since her mother is sure to blame her rather … her rather than her cheating, emotionally frigid ex. A couple of drinks and two Dramamine later, Megan finds herself spilling her sob story to the tall, dark, and handsome stranger in the seat next to her.
With only one week left to save his business, Josh McMillan boards a plane to Kansas City in a last-ditch effort, leaving the details to chance. An unexpected answer is delivered in the form of the beautiful brunette beside him. Though she’s completely loopy, her honesty, openness, and humor charm him. So when she passes out before landing, he helps her off the plane–a good deed that leads to a colossal misunderstanding. Her parents assume he’s her fiancé. In a twist of fate, the mix-up might help Josh save his business, so he plays along, figuring he can help Megan too. All he has to do is stage a public break up convincing enough to appease her mother.
Josh is only supposed to be a substitute groom, but the more time he and Megan spend together, the more their pretend engagement starts to feel real…and the less they want to break it off. Can a relationship that began as a farce turn into happily ever after?

This was a fun HEA read. I loved all of the characters. Denise Grover Swank I’ve discovered writes a variety of genres. Will not only read more of the stand alone books in this series but will also be checking out her other books
Ms Swank is one of the best authors I have read in a long time. She makes you want the book or series to never end.
Misunderstandings and SNAFUs are sprinkled throughout the book. Enjoyable read.
It was a light read, entertaining.
This was my first ever Denise Grover Swank book. I fell in love with her writing style, story line, and humor. This book made me laugh out loud so many times! I just love the characters and romance. This book kept me on my toes the entire time, I just loved it! Just a side note: when I’m old and gray I hope I’m just like the grandmother!
While far fetched, this story was entertaining and had some laugh-out-loud moments. It did inspire me to purchase the next book in the series as well as the first book in another one about the main character’s brother.
Loved this book! Didn’t want to put it down. The characters were great, the storyline was fun. It was my first time reading this author and I was not disappointed. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
I read this series a really long time ago. I was recently looking for something to read and thought I would re-read this series. I can’t believe I never reviewed it then! This book (and whole series) is fantastic. I really like Lexi and Ben. It’s definitely a cute heartwarming story.
An entertaining story that kept me busy for a few days.
I really liked The Substitute by Denise Grover Swank! I thought that it was a cute love story and I loved all of the funny moments in the book. I think the grandma was my favorite character, she was so funny, feisty, and smart. Some of the characters were annoying, like Blair and the mom, but they were more tolerable by the end of the book. I …
