Charleston psychic Melanie Middleton discovers the past isn’t finished revealing unsettling secrets in the third novel in the New York Times bestselling Tradd Street series. With her relationship with writer Jack Treholm as shaky as the foundation of her family home, Melanie’s juggling a number of problems. Like restoring her Tradd Street house…and resisting her mother’s pressure to ‘go … resisting her mother’s pressure to ‘go public’ with her talent—a sixth sense that unites them to the lost souls of the dead. But Melanie never anticipated her new problem.
Her name is Nola, Jack’s estranged young daughter who appears on their doorstep, damaged, lonely and defiantly immune to her father’s attempts to reconnect. Melanie understands the emotional chasm all too well. As a special, bonding gift Jack’s mother buys Nola an antique dollhouse—a precious tableaux of a perfect Victorian family. Melanie hopes the gift will help thaw Nola’s reserve and draw her into the family she’s never known.
At first, Nola is charmed, and Melanie is delighted—until night falls, and the most unnerving shadows are cast within its miniature rooms. By the time Melanie senses a malevolent presence she fears it may already be too late. A new family has accepted her unwitting invitation to move in—with their own secrets, their own personal demons, and a past that’s drawing Nola into their own inescapable darkness…

I love the whole series. The characters and their interactions make you want to read them all to get their whole story. I also loved learning about Charleston.
Huge fan of Karen White. This is a fun, easy, entertaining series to read. Smart and sassy lead character, who finds herself solving mysteries. I’m a big fan of just about any story based in the south, Karen never lets me down!
All her books are great !
Loved the characters and the ghosts. The old houses of Charleston are the best. Including the houses in this storyline was great. Loved the series.
I read all of Karen’s books. This series features ghosts in old homes. Melanie who is the main character is interesting and a little far out.
**Spoilers**
I’m really enjoying this series, though there are a few things that drive me crazy about the “I see dead people” thing. However, it’s probably not going to be resolved. Every time she talks about seeing ghosts all over Charleston I want to know where all the ghosts of slaves are – Charleston was a horrible place for them, of course it would be inundated with their ghosts. But Mellie never see them??? She lives in the historic district – they would absolutely be everywhere…?
Also, I have decided, in the last 2 books, that Jack is a Douche. I hate that he keeps getting so angry when Mellie doesn’t fall for his charm. He indicates that he still wants her, but is busy sleeping with her cousin? And then gets mad at her – no! He doesn’t get that privilege. He should have been dumped. But of course there is no story without that tension. Hopefully he gets better in the next book.
I’ve read all five books in this series and thoroughly enjoyed each one.
I love every book in this series. I wasn’t sure about the addition of a child for Jack but in the overall series, it works well. I love the combination of rehabbing old homes in historic Charleston and psychic abilities and spooky happenings with a romance woven in. She is a really, really good writer but I stick mostly to this series and if you like some romance, family dynamics especially slightly strange ones and ghostly threats, you’ll enjoy every book in this series.
This was the story that did not end. I had a hard time reading it. Very slow and repetitive but I have a harder time not finishing a book so I read it to the end…and it didn’t end! Arghhh Slow moving and extremely repetitive
Book three in the series. Absolutely love it with its tangled relationships and fascinating plot lines. Characters are very real and well-developed. Plot is believable and very good. Love this author and series!
You need to read the Tradd Street books in order. They are all awesome. I can’t wait for the next on!
Love Karen White’s ghost stories
Very different. Cute and a quick read
Terrible ending.
Tradd street has been a great read. Lots of fun!!
I really have a mindset about Melanie. Between her whining and the incessant need to offer a walking tour of Charleston at EVERY location change . . . I struggle to read White’s writing. The story was okay. Pretty predictable.
I don’t normally like paranormal but I love old houses so this was a great read.
I absolutely love the entire series.
In this 3rd installment of the Melanie Middleton series, Melanie sees herself as the guardian to Jack’s heretofore unknown daughter – Nola. As Jack and Nola do not yet know each other, living in the same quarters is proving more than difficult. One night they both appear on Melanie’s doorstep requesting temporary sanctuary for Nola. From there things get more and more bizarre.
I have enjoyed every book In Karen White’s Charleston series. The end of this one was a little disappointing but she had to leave us hanging for the next one. Charleston is a charming city and this book puts you right in town.
Can’t wait to read the next book….
