“Part The Andromeda Strain, part Night of the Living Dead.” —Salon.com
The visionary creator of the Academy Award-winning Pan’s Labyrinth and a Hammett Award-winning author bring their imaginations to this bold, epic novel about a horrifying battle between man and vampire that threatens all humanity. The first installment in a thrilling trilogy.
A Boeing 777 arrives at JFK and is on its way … thrilling trilogy.
A Boeing 777 arrives at JFK and is on its way across the tarmac, when it suddenly stops dead. All window shades are pulled down. All lights are out. All communication channels have gone quiet. Crews on the ground are lost for answers, but an alert goes out to the CDC. Dr. Eph Goodweather, head of their Canary project, a rapid-response team that investigates biological threats, gets the call and boards the plane. What he finds makes his blood run cold.
In a pawnshop in Spanish Harlem, a former professor and survivor of the Holocaust named Abraham Setrakian knows something is happening. And he knows the time has come, that a war is brewing . . .
So begins a battle of mammoth proportions as the vampiric virus that has infected New York begins to spill out into the streets. Eph, who is joined by Setrakian and a motley crew of fighters, must now find a way to stop the contagion and save his city—a city that includes his wife and son—before it is too late.
An epic battle for survival begins between man and vampire in The Strain—the first book in a heart-stopping trilogy from one of Hollywood’s most inventive storytellers and a critically acclaimed thriller writer. Guillermo del Toro, the genius director of the Academy Award-winning Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy, and Hammett Award-winning author Chuck Hogan have joined forces to boldly reinvent the vampire novel. Brilliant, blood-chilling, and unputdownable, The Strain is a nightmare of the first order.

I read all the books they all were fantastic I would read them again. They made a TV series which was good but never as good as the books.
Creepy…Scary…Fantastically Addictive…I wish the other 2 books of the trilogy were out now!!!
A Boeing 777 goes quiet once it lands in New York. The CDC is called into action when the virus spreads throughout the city. A survivor of the WW2 death camps has all the answers to the survival of the human race. Eph is joined by an unlikely team of …
I picked up this audiobook from my Libby App. Ron Pearlman narrated the story which was quite nice to listen to. The story itself was a little slow for me in the beginning. There was a lot of build up before things really started happening. It was worth making through the slow beginning. Looking forward to reading book 2.
Let’s first give credit where credit is due. Chuck Hogan is the talent behind this novel. GDT may have conceived of the idea, but I look to Hogan for making this novel such a tremendous experience for me.
Although I could’ve cared less about the reinvention of the vampire, the story element and how the apocalypse unfolded was very well done. …
Great series with a new twist on the Dracula / undead storyline. It was also a pretty good TV series.
Pretty sick story. Not for bedtime. Haha.
Good story. Suspenseful thriller
Very few things give me nightmares, I read them all.
A very fresh take on an old story, the strain is a well-put together rollercoaster ride of a read!
A bit long for me, but a great horror story!
Vampires are not my cup of tea.
A cool take on vampires. This is the first book of the trilogy, and in my opinion is the strongest of the three. Has good pacing, introduces the threat and gives a lot of interesting background. I found the protagonist relatable, but not likeable, but several of the supporting characters and the antagonists are more interesting and compelling. I …
I purchased The Strain by Chuck Hogan and Guillermo Del Toro on audiobook format for two reasons:
It was cheap (I bought it on Chirp.com)
I’m a big Guillermo Del Toro fan.
I had seen the first two episodes (I never got passed the second episode) of the TV show based on the book and I wasn’t invested in the book at the beginning. I was passively …
I LOVE Del Toro. He and Hogan paired up very well to create this trilogy.
I adored the first book, bigtime. They root their vampire myth in science in a way that made it new, realistic, and compelling. I was surprised as every detail of their mythos was revealed, and I loved it. The characters are flawed, and realistic, and they’re easy to hate …
Great book! Reads like a movie! Couldn’t put it down!
