A spellbinding coming of age novel about three sisters and the relationships and choices that shape their lives from the bestselling author of Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick, The Rules of Magic “This bewitching novel explores the bonds of sisterhood like a haunting modern fairy tale.”—GlamourEach of three sisters—Elv, Claire, and Meg—has a fate she must meet alone: one on a country road, one in … fate she must meet alone: one on a country road, one in the streets of Paris, and one in the corridors of her own imagination. Inhabiting their world are a charismatic man who cannot tell the truth, a neighbor who is not who he appears to be, a clumsy boy in Paris who falls in love and stays there, a detective who finds his heart’s desire, and a demon who will not let go.
What does a mother do when one of her children goes astray? How does she save one daughter without sacrificing the others? How deep can love go, and how far can it take you? These are the questions this luminous novel asks.
At once a coming-of-age tale, a family saga, and a love story of sensual longing, The Story Sisters sifts through the miraculous and the mundane as the girls become women and their choices haunt them, change them and, finally, redeem them. It confirms Alice Hoffman’s reputation as “a writer whose keen ear for the measure struck by the beat of the human heart is unparalleled” (The Chicago Tribune).

You can expect the unexpected when you read a story by Alice Hoffman. Typically, nothing is as it seems and soon you are brought into the depth of the characters’ lives and begin to see the real story within the story. This novel, The Story Sisters, is a perfect example of the amazing imagination of Alice Hoffman.
You begin with the three sisters …
The Story Sisters by Alice Hoffman is the rambling tale of three sisters whose charmed childhood is torn apart by a horrific secret. It’s a novel hard to write about without spoilers but I’ll endeavor to be cryptic!
As always, I was drawn in my Hoffman’s lyrical language, her beautiful description, her fairy tale elements, e.g. the seemingly …

Loved this: the sisters are unforgettable. There are some fun and also tragic moments. Hard to put this book down. Am still thinking about the characters a week later.
Any book by Alice Hoffman is worth reading and re-reading! Love her style of writing!
Great read until near the end; the first 9/10 of the book are worth the less stellar ending.
This was a great Alice Hoffman story. The interaction among the three sisters was quite interesting. Great plot and great characters.
Another of Alice Hoffman’s terrific books.
Loved this book, different and entertaining.
Ultimately I enjoyed it. Alice Hoffman is such a great writer. Sometimes the unusual elements take a little time to get used to, as in the girls’ secret language in this book.
Just wow! This book could quite possibly be a true story. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more books by this author.
One of Hoffman’s best books. Compelling characters, beautiful prose, hard to put down.
Another Mesmerizing Alice Hoffman book! Heartbreaking and beautifully written.
Alice Hoffman writes compelling stories
I found the three sisters haunting, and their story tragic. Elv and Meg’s lives were affected by a traumatic experience, and after finishing the book, I kept wondering whether things could have been different had the sisters made different decisions. The final section of the book was a relief–not happily ever after, but at least not unrelieved …
Great read
Alice Hoffman at her best! Thorough character development, a solid nicely layered storyline . While it had Ms Hoffman’s trademark mystic touches it was nicely dosed and exactly in the right spots. I read this book really fast and I found the mother daughter dynamics utterly believable and poignant.
I started this book and almost gave up on it when it took off for me. I’m so glad I stayed with it. It was so well-written, with unique characters, and a beautiful balance of grace, heartbreak and promise.
Alice Hoffman is the “Queen Of magical realism!
