The snow is dropping in Berry Springs… and so are the bodies.
On a pitch-black wintry night, Detective Dean Walker finds a man in the middle of an icy road, with a bullet between his eyes—a murder that is eerily similar to his father’s, which was never solved. Coincidence? No, Dean doesn’t believe in coincidences. He also doesn’t believe in love at first sight, until he meets the victim’s wife.
Psychologist Heidi Novak is hardly settling into her new mansion in the small, country town of Berry Springs when she receives a late-night visit by the handsome Dean Walker. Seconds after learning that her husband has been murdered, gunshots explode around her and it becomes apparent that she is the next target.
With a massive winter storm looming, Dean races to find the killer and keep Heidi safe, while facing a long a list of suspects, including Heidi’s arrogant sister-in-law and a local, crusty cowboy. As the evidence mounts, Dean becomes more convinced than ever that his father’s murder is connected to the death of Heidi’s husband.
And he can’t help but think . . . will Heidi be the second love he loses to the ice-cold killer?

The Story is a wicked good romantic suspense by Amanda McKinney. Ms. McKinney, time after time, has kept me enthralled with her stories. This book is no exception, once started, I had to read till the end. This book is well-written and populated with a spectacular cast of characters. Dean’s father was shot in the head and his case was never solved. Now a detective, when Dean finds a man in the road with a bullet between his eyes it’s so familiar it’s spooky. When Dean arrives to tell Heidi her husband has been murdered and saves her from the same fate, Dean suspects everyone except Heidi. Dean and Heidi’s story is fast-paced, full of drama, action and suspense. I loved this book from cover to cover and look forward to my next book by Amanda McKinney. The Storm is part of the Berry Springs Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
The Storm is the perfect title for this book since most of it takes place during a winter storm, over the course of a couple of days. It’s a very enjoyable murder mystery/romance and I was completely caught up in the story. Dean and Heidi are likable characters who have great chemistry. There is never a dull moment in this story and I really had no idea who the murderer was until the end of the book, so that’s saying something! I can’t wait to read the other books in the series.
I am voluntarily reviewing an advance reader copy of this book.
An enjoyable mystery and a new author to me (I am looking forward to reading her previous books). Detective Dean Walker’s father was murdered years ago and his case was never solved. Now he finds a body, in the middle of the road in Berry Springs, killed in the same manner. Could they be connected? When Dean makes the death notification, he meets the victim’s wife and is stunned at his immediate attraction to her. He knows he will need a clear head and no distractions in order to solve this murder. Heidi Novak is a psychologist who recently moved to Berry Springs to be with her husband. When shots are fired at the home, Dean has to find out who would want not only the victim, but the wife dead? The story grabbed me right away with descriptions of the storm that is making it difficult to obtain evidence. Ms. McKinney’s characters were so well described that I could see them in my mind. I really enjoyed my visit to Berry Springs and look forward to the previous books. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Great chemistry between the two main characters.
Lots of other great characters as well and lots of twists and turns.
An enjoyable read.
I received a free copy of this book via Hidden Gems and am voluntarily leaving a review
This is the first book I have read from this series and this writer. I was interested because it is a mystery book. What a mystery indeed. I loved it . Amazing storyline. This book grips you right from the beginning when Dean is out with his dad bonding. But bonding time leads to something tragic. Years later Dean is now an officer still dealing with everything. One night beginning of a nasty storm Dean finds a body. Hold on because from there you are taken on a wild ride. Twists turns suspense . This book has it all. Amazing characters a little steamy romance. Just so well written enjoyable keeps you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out who did it. Highly recommend.I will definitely be reading from this series and writer.
I really enjoy this author
This book was well written. The characters were well written and the flow of the story was good. My only objection to the story was the relationship build between the two main characters. This woman just lost her husband. He was murdered. So to my way of thinking, even if she didn’t totally love him or felt that she was questioning her marriage, I still find it hard to believe that she would just fall immediately into a relationship without any feelings of guilt about that. I just felt there was a rush into the relationship and it wasn’t realistic.
It is a great romantic suspense , it is part of a serie but easy to read as a stand alone, no cliff hangers , loved the spooky atmosphere and great caracters. Could not put it away
Didnt care for the charcters or the storyline
