The sanctuary of the nunnery promises respite from these unwanted visitations . . . or so she prays. Her chaperone is Michael Murray, a young widower who, though he still mourns the death of his wife, finds himself powerfully drawn to his charge. But when the time-traveling Comte St. Germain learns of Joan’s presence in Paris, and of her link to Claire Fraser—La Dame Blanche—Murray is drawn into a battle whose stakes are not merely the life but the very soul of the Scotswoman who, without even trying, has won his heart.

Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novellas are a little bit extra for devoted fans – shorter than the lengthy novels, and adding additional information about our favorite characters. They always deliver intriguing storylines, and The Space Between is no different.
The action in this novella takes place immediately following Echo in the Bone in the Outlander series. Joan MacKimmie (remember? Laoghaire’s daughter?) has decided to be a nun and is leaving for France. She’s traveling with Michael Murray (Hey! Ian and Jenny’s son! Young Ian’s brother!) who is going to Paris to work the family wine business. Lo and behold, we are reintroduced to the Comte St. Germaine (Wait! Didn’t he die in Dragonfly in Amber?), a long-ago nemesis to Joan’s stepfather’s wife, Claire Fraser.
If you’ve read all of the Outlander books, you will easily follow the action; if you haven’t you might want to get caught up before you read this. Either way, it is absolutely FLOORING to read the first page and discover the Comte still alive.
Gabaldon’s famous wit and well-researched writing will transport you to her world, as with all of her other books. A fabulous quick read that will answer some questions – but will leave you with so many more questions as well!
If you love the Outlander series and are in the mood for a much shorter read, check out Diana Gabaldon’s novellas, such as The Space Between. Focusing on different characters, they add to the Outlander “universe.”
Ms. Gabaldon has a way of drawing you into the world she has created and capturing you in such a way that you do not wish to leave!
All of Diana Gabaldon’s stories, whether in novel or novella form, are well written with very believable characters! Storytelling at its best!
An entertaining Outlander side-story. I very much enjoyed getting to know these characters better and seeing them interact with one another. Michael is a kind man who has an honorable and protective side. Joan is a strong woman with fascinating psychic abilities. The Compte St. Germain is a particularly interesting
and compelling character. The story of these three definitely kept me engaged throughout with its sense of mystery, intrigue, and a touch of romance. Hoping to see more of these characters in upcoming Outlander books.
Love anything Outlander, but the main books are enough for me.
This book is loaded with so much interesting tidbits, especially for such a novella. There is so much that can be written from the facts discovered in the book. I would love a full length novel to continue this story. Joan and Michael are interesting in themselves but to add The Comte and Raymond!!! I definitely will need more!
Diana Gabaldon is the best story teller.
This novella takes us to a time in the future with the now grown children of Ian and Jenny (son Michael) and Joan McKimmie (daughter of Laoghaire) in Paris. It is a quick read, but has appearances by Master Raymond, and a character who was assumed to have died in Dragonfly in Amber. Diana Gabaldon doesn’t disappoint here, there is tragedy and mystery and characters who touch your heart.
The number one author of today, yesterday and likely our tomorrows as well. I find I measure all other authors to Herself and find them lacking.
This book is yet another piece of the Outlander world, with adventures by Joan (Jamie Frazier’s step daughter) crossing paths with the Comte St Germain (Claire Frazier’s enemy).
Like all Diana Gabaldon ‘s books from the minute you start reading to the very end , you want more! You get so involved with the characters and the story you hate to put the book down!
I love everything I have read by this author. I’m not even sure why as it is not my usual choice of reading material, but I was drawn into the Outlander universe.
One in a long American history historical fiction series starring a time traveling physician in the school of Dorothy Gale of Oz fame and her Scottish lover from a past era who together seek and find adventures, challenges, and enemies that the must overcome with a combination of wit and improvisational technology.
After the first book, series gets much better. After the fourth book, this reader wsas exhausted.
Anything written by Diana Gabaldon is an excellent read. This book is just what you need to carry you through while waiting for the next large novel to arrive.
Another to fill the gaps but one I really enjoyed.
If your a fan of the Outlander series you will love this book. It fills out many of the characters stories.
Anything by DG is great; this one really “fills in the blanks” for other characters. Even though neither Claire nor Jaimie are characters, you still get more insight.
Another Outlander novella, fills in details not in the main books.
Always an exceptionally great read by Diana.
Anything by Diana Gabaldon’ is worth reading…
