The truth isn’t what it seems in this stirring novel of suspense. After presenting a major scientific breakthrough to a rapt audience across the country, renowned astronomer Sarah Mayfield returns home to a disturbing discovery. Her husband, Ben, a Los Angeles restaurateur, has disappeared, leaving behind an unexplained bank deposit of a million dollars, a loaded Glock in the nightstand, and a … nightstand, and a video security system that’s been wiped clean. The only answers their son, Zack, can offer are the last words his father said to him: keep the doors locked and set the alarm.
Sarah’s marriage was more troubled than anyone suspected, but now she is afraid that her husband’s recent past could be darker than she dares to admit. Suspecting that nothing about Ben’s vanishing is what it seems, Sarah must delve into the space between old memories, newfound fears, and misleading clues to piece together the mystery of her husband’s disappearance—and find what she hopes in her heart is the truth.

Like a good mystery, this book kept me guessing until the end. The Space Between not only entertains you, but reminds you to examine those things in your life that are hiding in plain sight.
A beautifully written, fast-paced read that will pull you in from the beginning. Authors are some of my favorite people, I marvel at their ability to research. This book is so well researched, you will have a lesson in the stars in addition to solve a mystery. A marriage is floundering and a restauranteur is suing his partners. From here this read takes off. I did figure out early on who did it, but it didn’t diminish to story line for me. The ending left me with a lot of questions…a sequel?
Thanks to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing for this ARC. This opinion is mine alone!
The Space Between was an amazing novel full of suspense! I enjoyed the way there were so many different pieces to the plot that were introduced to us often. Sarah is an astronomer. She has been away doing a presentation of a new scientific breakthrough that has been made. When she returns home, she realizes that her husband Ben has disappeared. She begins to discover various things that have happened recently that make the whole mystery of Ben’s disappearance more and more confusing. Sarah and Ben’s marriage has had its recent troubles. Sarah has secrets, and it becomes more and more apparent that maybe Ben has his own secrets. The discoveries that are made over the next few days lead to more confusion about what actually happened. We get to know the character Sarah as we follow her attempt to put together all of the pieces to find out what really happened. The other characters are less known to us, adding to the mystery. This novel explores marriage, ambition, and the relationships that exist between people. The suspenseful plot will draw you in until the final page!
I’ve read all of Dete’s books and I’ve loved them all. This one blew me away, on so many levels. As I was reading The Space Between, I had no idea where or how the story was going to end. I went back and forth, not knowing what to believe. What a page turner!
The main character, Sarah, is a very strong person, a scientist who questions everything. She’s not one to just accept those things that appear to be fact but questions everything she hears and learns. When she comes home and discovers her husband is missing and could be in danger—or could possibly be a danger to others—she keeps digging for the facts to find out the truth. She has such faith in her husband and doesn’t want to doubt him but all the evidence is not in his favor. I had a hard time believing in him myself, but I wanted to trust her feelings. What an amazing women she is!
I also loved the knowledge I gained about space, NASA, and the constellations from the story within the story. Sarah is a renowned scientist who recently made a major scientific breakthrough. We learn so much about all of that and all about the possibilities that are still to be discovered in space. There is some serious information there and it was all fascinating!
The Space Between is definitely a book I’ll highly recommend. I guarantee you’ll not be able to put it down!!
The Space Between is an amazing book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it from start to finish. This is a story about Sarah Mayfield, her husband Ben, and their son Zack. Sarah is a well known astronomer who comes home from presenting a major scientific breakthrough to a spellbound audience across the country, to realize her husband is missing. Her son Zack saw him last and Ben’s last words were, lock the doors and set the alarm. Sarah begins investigating what has happened to her husband, in doing so she must face the facts that their marriage was crumbling and did she really know her husband as well as she thinks she did. There seems to be a lot of secrets she didn’t know about. This book is not your average fiction novel, it is full of mystery and suspense. Each chapter takes you deeper into the lives of the characters. It was a beautiful love story with a very suspenseful plot woven through it. I couldn’t wait to learn more with each new page. I love Dete’s writing style and completely enjoyed Good Sam, but she continues to surprise and surpass with each new book. I highly recommended this book and give it 5+ stars Dete Meserve you are awesome as always!
The Space Between is riveting suspense, a book that took so many turns that I had no idea what was coming next! Along with suspense, this was also a love story about a couple who fall in love beneath the stars, but who have drifted apart….all of those feelings are melded into this story about a husband who goes missing, and a wife whose feelings are conflicted and confused. I loved Sarah…I loved that she was a smart, badass scientist who always seemed to be one step ahead of the authorities, and also a wife looking for the truth at the same time she’s looking for her husband.
Wow! Completely amazed with this book. The writing is outstanding and engaged me with every word. The story has twists and turns causing you to believe one thing and then another.Unlike many thrillers, this one has a very satisfying ending. I definitely recommend this book.
P.S. Dete Meserve, if you’re reading this, I love how you chose Lauren as one of the names of the characters!
I received this book from #netgalley for an honest review. Dete Meserve is a great writer and this book is just more proof! When Sarah comes home from out of town from her job, after making a big scientific discovery, she also discovers her husband is missing.
Not only is Ben missing but he is also presumed dead and Sarah is the main suspect! Of course nothing is what it seems, and at every turn there seems to be more odds stacked up against her. Their son Zach , who also holds a few secrets of his own, is no help either in the whereabouts of Ben. What is the real truth and who is the real culprit?
I like the way this story was written with the tie in of astronomy and romance, with lots of suspense!
A quick enjoyable read for everyone!
I don’t usually binge read, but found myself having to reprimand myself, to not neglect other responsibilities, and tear myself away . The
Space Between by Dete Meserve is a very good book, from start to finish. A gripping mystery, that had me trying to put the pieces together. But the beauty of the accompanying story of Sarah’s astronomy background, grounded her and the panic that she felt, unbelieving that her husband Ben could be dead or was a murderer. It allowed her to process events in a clinical way, showing much more stability than the investigators in the case. It also shared with the reader, the mystery and beauty of the unknown, that is our universe.
I enjoyed the various players, Zach the typical kid, Aaron, her computer genius co worker, her bossy sister Rachael, Kate the TV reporter, who all contributed to the weave of the story.
It’s probably the best mystery that I have read for awhile, had me turning pages into the wee hours. My thanks to Net Galley, Lake Union Publishers, for the opportunity to review this wonderful novel. I hope my review reflects how much I enjoyed it.

The stars and good mystery.
I loved the complex characters in this story. Some I wanted to smack right upside the head, boy were they well written! I loved all the astronomy talk woven throughout this book. Definitely my favorite character!
The plot line kept me looking in the slightly wrong directions so that when all was revealed it was very satisfying and enjoyable.
If you start this book late in the day you are liable to lose a nights sleep. Nearly impossible to put down from the beginning. Sarah Mayfield comes home from a trip to NASA where she made an important presentation to discover her husband Ben not home and later reported missing, a gun in her nightstand and the home security system wiped clean. Her teenage son told her the last thing his Dad said when he left, he thought to go to work, was to lock the doors and set the alarm. It was just the beginning of a multitude of mysterious occurrences and Sarah questioning who she can trust.
Dete Meserve has a gift of writing suspenseful novels that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat turning the pages to the very end.
This is a good mystery that kept me guessing.
A great slow burning, suspenseful novel that builds the pressure til the end. You want to stay up all night to figure out what exactly is going on. You’ll love this if you love mysterious tales.
Dete Meserve presents her readers with a delightful blend of mystery, murder, intrigue, family, and romance. This book is an enjoyable read with plenty of twists and suspense but no alternating timelines that often confuse people, and only toward the end does alternating perspectives come into play. Just a straight forward enjoyable murder mystery and love story. The characters are engaging, and the story flowed smoothly. Sarah and Ben are a bit quirky but lovable. They wrote messages to each other in code, sometimes even in Klingon. Does it get any geekier? But their marriage has become strained and divorce was even mentioned before Sarah left on her business trip. Upon Sarah’s return her husband is missing. Is it now too late to save their marriage? As secrets came out about both of them the intensity was notched up, and I wasn’t quite sure where the story was taking me. Meserve does an excellent job of leading the reader along and then nudging in a different direction, constantly adjusting the pace of the story. I was totally along for the journey.
If you love a good mystery with lots of suspense, I highly recommend this book.
After announcing the biggest discovery of her career, Sarah Mayfield, astronomer, comes home and finds that her life has been totally tuned upside down. Her husband of fifteen years, Ben, is missing and as time goes on is presumed to be dead. Sarah and her son Kyle are trying to get by the day to day trying to understand what’s happening to their lives. Sarah is thrust into a world she never imagined and begins to question everything she knows about her marriage, her husband, her life. Sarah also comes to find out that maybe she doesn’t know certain people in her life as well as she thinks she does. As the mystery unfolds will Sarah be able to put her life back together?
This book has you hooked from the very beginning. One of my favorite things Sarah says several times in the book is “Like so many things in the universe, the answers might be hiding in plain sight or obscured by what we see in front of us”. Sarah’s willingness to try and see things from all angles and make new discoveries whether it be in her work or in life is infectious. Dete Meserve has written an incredible story of faith, love, family and hope, with a fantastic mystery to make it all come together!
I absolutely loved this book. If you haven’t read Dete Meserve before, I suggest you pick up one of her books. She’s an amazing author that tells you a story that keeps you riveted until the end.
The Space Between is the first book I have read by Determine Meserve. I will now be looking for her other books! This is the spellbinding story of Sara Mayfield and her family – – her missing husband and her son. As you read the plot twists and turns and the story really pulls you in. I couldn’t put this book down. I highly recommend it.
Never a big science buff, I found this interesting. Don’t think for a second it is a boring science type book, it’s not! What struck me and equally impressed me is that it was obvious the Author had done significant research into the underlying science info that is woven throughout the story. This is both spy and love story genre for those interested in that information. The twists throughout the story kept me hooked from the beginning and I read it cover-to-cover at almost one sitting. I didn’t want to put it down! Dete is a new to me author but guaranteed this is not the last book of hers I’ll read.
I read very few books in the suspense or mystery genre, but this one sounded interesting with the inclusion of astronomy in the story.
I must say I was quite glued to the story, always wondering what would happen next and how the whole story would turn out.
It is about a couple, Sarah Mayfield and her husband Ben, who had been going through a rough patch in their marriage. Sarah is an astronomer and her husband Ben a restaurateur, They also have a teenage son Zack .
Sarah returns from a business trip with NASA, where she talked about a big discovery she had made and finds her husband missing, leaving a million dollars in an old bank account , a gun in her bedside drawer, and a security system that has been wiped clean.
Ben was about to testify in a court trial, to do with his restaurant, partners , and missing money.
I don’t really want to say too much, but this book was well written with a lot of interesting plots and information. It was a hard book for me to put down. I will definitely check out her other books.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the ARC of this book.
One of the best books ever! This was my first Dete Meserve’s book and won’t be the last. This romantic suspense. so well written, has it all: captivating, mesmerizing, thrilling, intriguing, suspenseful, heartbreaking, page-turner, fast-paced, with twists and turns and even more. The world building is really great. All the characters are well described. I loved the story of Sarah, a renowned astronomer, and her husband Ben, a Los Angeles restaurateur. The astronomy and technology details are very interesting. The plot is extremely well built and so well written. And THE ending!! Sometimes, you’ve got a gem and you’re so grateful someone told you to listen to it. And I’ll listen to it again. You absolutely have to listen to this incredible and wonderful story. Laurel Schroeder has done a stellar and breathtaking interpretation with all the characters. She’s one of my favorite narrators and this story just confirm her place with the best narrators. This was my first listen to Thimothy Andrés Pabon. I absolutely love his voice! He has a warm and sexy voice, a delight to listen. Now, I’m looking forward for my books written by this author and read by these narrators. Thanks a lot to the author and narrators for this wonderful story. I ABSOLUTELY enjoyed my listening and I TOTALLY recommend this audiobook.
